Can you foster if you live in a flat or rent?
A flat or rented home is not automatically disqualifying across all organisations. The right answer depends on the animal and the rescue’s criteria. The RSPCA says its dog placements are assessed individually and asks renters to have landlord permission. RSPCA Central London says a garden is not required for its short-term fostering placements; Battersea’s dog-fostering criteria, by contrast, include a private garden. Rescues match animals to carers according to the animal’s needs and the household’s circumstances; applying does not guarantee a particular animal.
RSPCA Central London says applicants can begin with an online form or message, followed by a home visit. Applicants discuss their experience and sign a foster agreement. Long-term placements may also have a supplemental letter setting out terms for that animal. What costs, supplies and veterinary support should you expect?
Support differs by organisation and branch, so ask what applies to your specific placement before agreeing to it.
- Battersea: says fostering costs the carer nothing and that it provides food, bedding, toys and veterinary care.
- RSPCA guidance: says essential costs such as food, litter, basic bedding, toys and veterinary care are covered, but branches may distribute supplies differently or reimburse only expenses approved in advance.
- RSPCA Central London: provides a starter pack and veterinary cover. Short-term carers then provide ordinary food and litter; the branch provides special diets and extra food for nursing mothers and kittens.
- Dogs Trust: says it supplies necessary items and covers veterinary treatment.
Before accepting a placement, ask who provides food, litter, equipment and medication; which vet to use; how to get urgent help; how transport works; and what to do if your circumstances change. RSPCA guidance notes that carers may need to use specified vets, follow coordinator instructions and attend occasional check-ins. Confirm the arrangement before buying supplies.
