Best Friends Animal Society documented the project in an August 22, 2022 feature and a follow-up published November 21, 2025. The trailer is a personal arrangement, not a template, but it shows how a small, purpose-built space can make fostering workable at home.
Why they used a trailer instead of a spare room
Jane was anxious around dogs, and the couple did not want foster guests to disrupt her life inside the house. Their answer was a travel trailer that would stay parked in the driveway and serve as a dedicated space for dogs and cats. Best Friends described the project as a “Pet B&B” and called the trailer a “studio apartment” for foster animals.
What went into the space
The 2022 feature lists the first round of work: paint, reupholstered cushions, cabinets, beds, bowls, leashes, and toys. The 2025 follow-up describes the trailer after it had been remodeled and was in regular use. The couple’s approach is to fit the space to each animal rather than to one standard guest.
Beds sized to each guest
The couple prepares beds in several sizes. A large bed suits a big dog, and smaller beds are set out for small dogs and cats. Cori summed up the approach in the 2025 account:

Cat-specific features
For cats, the couple adds hideaway spots, scratchers, and climbing places. These give a nervous animal somewhere to retreat and somewhere to move, which is the reason the setup was designed around cats as well as dogs. The reports do not say how these features were chosen or whether they were tested against any standard.
Power and temperature control
The 2022 feature says the couple added a 30-amp power outlet so the trailer’s air conditioning could run continuously. That made it possible to foster two Chihuahuas during the Los Angeles summer heat. The article presents the outlet as one part of the project and gives no installation steps, wiring details, or electrical safety guidance. Any similar upgrade is electrical work to plan with a licensed electrician, checked against the RV’s own power requirements and the capacity of the site’s supply.

Life in the trailer after Jane’s death
The 2025 follow-up says Jane died in 2024. The couple kept fostering in the space she had inspired. Reported guests include a mother dog with puppies, cats and dogs, a kitten rescued during the Los Angeles wildfires, and Orpha, who was later adopted.

Features worth considering for your own setup
The couple’s reported setup suggests the following questions. These describe what they did, not tested criteria or professional guidance.
- Separation from resident animals: a dedicated space keeps a nervous resident cat away from foster dogs.
- Bed sizes: offer at least one large bed and several small ones, so each animal has a fitting place to rest.
- Cat retreats: hideaway spots, scratchers, and climbing places give cats options to hide, scratch, and move.
- Temperature control: the couple’s reported need for continuous air conditioning in a Los Angeles summer shows why a climate plan matters, and why the power supply must support it.
- Remote checking: a Wi-Fi-connected camera lets caregivers look in on animals.
- Supplies: bowls, leashes, and toys were part of the reported setup.
