As of October 2026, no raw cat food can be shown to be the healthiest, and U.S. health agencies do not endorse feeding raw. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that it does not recommend feeding raw pet food or treats to dogs and cats. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that H5N1 bird flu can be deadly to cats and tells owners to weigh the risk carefully before feeding uncooked meat or uncooked pet food.

If you still decide on a raw diet, the useful question is narrower than “which raw food is best.” Choose a product whose package states it is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, confirm that its lot has no open safety notice, and make sure you can store and handle it safely every day.

This guide does not rank seven products. The brands discussed below come from Cats.com’s raw cat food reviews, and they are candidates to check, not a verified top seven. Cats.com’s scores are its own editorial ratings, not independent nutritional testing, and labels, prices and shipping areas change.

What U.S. health agencies say about raw cat food

FDA: cats are particularly sensitive to H5N1

FDA’s guidance on reducing H5N1 risk in cats (January 2025) states that cats are particularly sensitive to the virus, which can be deadly. It notes that CDC and the American Veterinary Medical Association discourage diets of uncooked meat because of pathogen risk, including H5N1, and advises owners to consider the risk carefully before feeding uncooked meat or uncooked pet food. FDA guidance on reducing H5N1 risk in cats FDA’s consumer page on raw pet food diets gives broader background on pathogen risks: Get the facts about raw pet food diets.

CDC: no raw pet food or treats

CDC’s pet food safety guidance (January 2025) states: “CDC does not recommend feeding raw pet food or treats to dogs and cats.” For a food used as the main diet, it advises looking for “complete and balanced” on the label and talking with a veterinarian. CDC pet food safety guidance

New H5N1 duties for pet food makers (September 2025)

In September 2025, FDA said that covered manufacturers using uncooked or unpasteurized poultry- or cattle-derived ingredients must reanalyze their food-safety plans and include H5N1 as a known or reasonably foreseeable hazard. This is a legal duty on the company. It does not certify that any particular food is safe. FDA on food-safety plans for cat and dog food manufacturers

A 2026 case in a veterinary professional

A CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published May 7, 2026 described one veterinary professional with serologic evidence of H5N1 infection after occupational exposure to infected cats. The report’s public-health message is that owners should not feed raw animal products to cats. It investigates one occupational exposure and does not estimate how often ordinary households are at risk. CDC MMWR report, May 7, 2026

The RAWR Chicken Eats lot notice

FDA reported that two lots of RAWR Raw Cat Food Chicken Eats tested positive for H5N1. FDA cited whole-genome sequencing evidence that the virus in a deceased cat and the virus in the tested product samples were related, which it said was consistent with a common contamination source. The lots named are CCS 25 077 and CCS 25 093. Check the code and sell-by date on your bag against FDA’s notice before buying or feeding it. FDA notice on RAWR Chicken Eats lots

What makes a raw cat food “healthy”

For this guide, “healthy” means a food that passes five checks. “Raw” is not on the list, because the evidence reviewed does not show that raw food is healthier than a well-formulated cooked diet.

  • Adequacy for the life stage. The package says the food is complete and balanced for a named life stage. Adult-maintenance labeling does not cover kittens or pregnant cats.
  • Fit for the individual cat. Age, body condition and medical history change what is appropriate.
  • Disclosure. The maker names its protein and organ sources, says whether bone is included, and states what pathogen-reduction steps it uses.
  • Handling burden. Freezer space, thawing and cleanup must fit your routine, because mistakes add risk.
  • Current safety record. No open FDA notice or recall covers the lot you are buying, checked on the day of purchase.

How to read the label

  1. Find the adequacy statement. Look for “complete and balanced” with a named life stage. Manufacturers use two different routes: a statement that the food was substantiated by feeding trials, or a statement that it is formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles. These are different claims, so note which one the label uses.
  2. Match the life stage. A kitten needs a food labeled for growth or for all life stages. An adult-maintenance label is not enough.
  3. Confirm it is a complete food. A premix or supplement is incomplete by design and needs other ingredients added.
  4. Record the lot code and sell-by date, and check them against current FDA notices before buying.
  5. Ask the manufacturer which pathogen-reduction process it uses, if any, such as high-pressure processing, and what finished-product testing supports its claims. If the company does not say, record that the information is not stated.

Answers

Cats.com describes Answers’ raw formulas as complete and balanced, and reports a frozen chicken recipe containing muscle meat, organs and ground bone. Read the complete-and-balanced wording on the bag you buy. Cats.com’s Answers review

Primal

Cats.com describes Primal’s raw recipes as made from meat, organs and bone. Its 2026 review gives Primal 7.2 out of 10 overall and 4 out of 10 for recall history. Those scores come from a rubric that also weighs species appropriateness, ingredient quality, variety, price and customer experience, and they are not clinical measures. The description does not specify a format, so check the product page to see whether a given Primal product is frozen or freeze-dried. Cats.com’s Primal review

RAWR

Cats.com reports that RAWR’s bone-inclusive recipes are formulated to meet and exceed AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages, and that its boneless recipes are for adult maintenance. Choose by recipe, because the two types are not interchangeable for a kitten. Confirm the wording on the current package, since the review reports the claim rather than quoting the label. Raw Paws

Raw Paws offers frozen prepared foods and freeze-dried products. Cats.com reviews a freeze-dried complete duck food and a frozen beef-and-tripe blend. Read the adequacy statement on each product’s package before buying, because a favorable impression of one item does not carry over to the rest of the line. Cats.com’s Raw Paws review

Raw Meow

Raw Meow sells frozen meals, freeze-dried formulas and premixes. Cats.com reports that packaging for its freeze-dried meals says they are formulated to AAFCO nutrient levels for all life stages. That is a brand-label claim as described by a reviewer, so confirm it on the bag. Cats.com’s Raw Meow review

TCfeline

TCfeline is a premix, not a ready-to-serve food. Cats.com says it is combined with water, raw meat and raw liver. The finished diet is only as complete as the recipe you follow, so use the specified ingredients in the specified amounts and do not substitute. Cats.com’s TCfeline review

How the three formats compare

Format Storage Preparation Main burden Examples in Cats.com’s reviews
Frozen prepared food Needs freezer space; keep frozen until use Thaw before serving Thawing routine; discard spoiled or leftover portions Raw Paws frozen beef-and-tripe blend; Raw Meow frozen meals; Answers frozen chicken recipe
Freeze-dried prepared food Shelf-stable; keep sealed and dry Serve as packaged, or follow the package if water is added Least freezer space, but the food is still uncooked Raw Paws freeze-dried complete duck food; Raw Meow freeze-dried formulas
Premix Store the premix as its package directs Combine with water, raw meat and raw liver, following the specified recipe Largest: sourcing, mixing and nutritional responsibility fall on the owner TCfeline

Format changes the daily work, not the pathogen question. None of these formats is cooked, and freezing and freeze-drying preserve food rather than cook it. If a manufacturer describes a pathogen-reduction step, ask which pathogens the process is validated against and what finished-product testing supports the claim. A process description is not a test result for the lot in your freezer.

Handling raw cat food at home

  1. Thaw frozen portions in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Use or discard thawed food within the time the manufacturer gives.
  2. Serve in a clean bowl, and wash the bowl after every meal with hot, soapy water.
  3. Discard uneaten raw food. Do not return it to the freezer or refrigerator for a later meal.
  4. Wash hands with soap and water after handling food, scoops and bowls. Keep the cutting board and utensils used for raw food separate from those used for people’s food, and clean prep surfaces thoroughly.
  5. Keep young children, pregnant people, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system away from preparing or cleaning up raw food.

Cost per day, not price per bag

Compare cost per day. Daily cost equals the package price divided by the grams in the package, multiplied by the grams fed per day. For example, a 1 kg bag priced at $40 and fed at 100 g a day costs $4 a day, before thawing waste or delivery charges. The reviewed sources do not give current, comparable prices for these brands, so take the price from the product page on the day you compare.

Kittens, pregnant cats and cats with health conditions

  • Kittens. Confirm the package says growth or all life stages. An adult-maintenance label is not enough for a growing kitten, and a veterinarian should set the feeding plan.
  • Pregnant or nursing cats. These cats need nutrition for reproduction, so check the label for that life stage and ask a veterinarian before starting any raw food.
  • Cats with a medical condition or on a prescription diet. A raw food is not a substitute for a veterinary plan. Discuss it before switching, and do not change a prescription diet without your veterinarian.
