Covered vs. Open Litter Boxes for Kittens: Which Is Better?

An open, roomy litter box with a low entry is a sensible starting point for a kitten. Compare covered and open options by access, usable space, cleanliness, and your kitten’s behavior.

For most young kittens, start with an open litter box that has a low entry and enough room to turn around. Easy access and usable space matter more than whether the box has a cover. Cats differ in their preferences, so a covered box can work if your kitten enters and uses it comfortably; when in doubt, offer both and see which one the kitten chooses.

Why an open, low-entry box is a good starting point

A kitten should be able to get in and out without struggling. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines say that box edges should not be too high for a kitten or senior cat to enter and exit easily. An open tray makes the entrance and interior easy to assess, so it is a practical first choice while your kitten is small.

Choose by the kitten’s ability to use the box, not by assumptions that kittens need privacy or will automatically prefer an open space. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that some cats like privacy while others dislike enclosed spaces.

How to choose the right size

Measure usable interior space rather than relying on a box’s outside dimensions or label. The AAHA/AAFP guidelines recommend a box at least 1.5 times the cat’s nose-to-tail length. This is a sizing guideline, not a measured guarantee of preference or litter-box success. A cover may reduce the space available for turning, so check the inside dimensions and reassess as your kitten grows.

How covered and open boxes compare

What matters Open box Covered box
Entry and exit A low-sided tray can make access straightforward for a small kitten. Check that the entrance is easy for the kitten to use; a hood does not compensate for a high or difficult entry.
Room to move The interior is visible, making usable space easier to judge. The cover may reduce usable space; check that the kitten can enter, turn, and leave comfortably.
Preference Some cats may prefer an open space. Some cats may like the privacy; others may dislike being enclosed.
Cleaning and monitoring Waste is easier to see, which can make monitoring and frequent scooping easier. A hood may retain odor. Regular cleaning matters whichever style you choose.
Scattered litter and privacy Does not provide a cover. Owners may value a cover for containing scattered litter or providing privacy, but the cited guidance does not establish that it will do so for every kitten or household.

The 2013 AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guideline reports that cats were equally divided in their preference for large covered versus uncovered boxes. That finding is not described as a kitten-specific experiment, so it does not show that kittens as a group prefer one style. The guideline also says regular cleaning may influence preference more than whether a box is covered, and recommends open boxes where possible to make monitoring and frequent scooping easier.

How to find out what your kitten prefers

  1. Set up an open box with a low entry and enough usable space for your kitten to turn around.
  2. If you want to compare styles, offer a clean covered box as well. Keep both boxes similarly accessible and make sure the covered box has enough interior space.
  3. Observe which box the kitten uses, and keep the chosen box clean and easy to reach.
  4. As your kitten grows, check the entry height and interior dimensions again; a box that worked when the kitten was small may no longer be roomy enough.

Do not infer that a cover is the cause of an accident from one incident. Check access, space, cleanliness, litter, and location before changing the setup.

When box avoidance needs attention

If your kitten repeatedly avoids the box or soils elsewhere, treat the behavior as a reason to investigate rather than as a simple preference for covered or open boxes. Review access, room to move, cleanliness, litter, and location. Persistent house-soiling warrants veterinary advice because health or behavioral issues can contribute. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines cite a 2016 study in which 31.7% of cats with house-soiling behavior had been evaluated by a veterinarian for that condition. That figure concerns veterinary evaluation, not box preference, and is not a kitten-specific prevalence estimate.

The Cornell Feline Health Center’s house-soiling guidance also notes that kittens need low-sided boxes and that covered boxes may hold odors, while open boxes provide a 360-degree view. These are practical considerations, not proof that every kitten will respond the same way.
