Should You Kill Tomato Hornworms? Why Experts Say No

Check a tomato hornworm for white braconid-wasp cocoons before removing it; leave parasitized caterpillars so the wasps can emerge. Hand-pick un-parasitized hornworms when they are causing significant damage.

Do not automatically kill every tomato hornworm you find. First check for white, rice-like cocoons on its back: these are braconid-wasp cocoons, and the parasitized hornworm should be left alone so the wasps can emerge. Remove an un-parasitized hornworm when it is causing significant damage, such as stripping leaves or eating fruit.

The quick answer: inspect before you remove it

What you find What to do Why
White cocoons attached to the hornworm’s back Leave it on the plant, or move it gently to a sheltered plant nearby Parasitic wasps are developing inside and will help control other hornworms
No cocoons and active feeding damage Hand-pick and kill it It may continue eating leaves and fruit rapidly
Uncertain identification Check the size, horn, markings, frass, and feeding pattern before treating Not every green caterpillar is a tomato hornworm

Why experts say to leave parasitized hornworms alive

Braconid wasp larvae develop inside a hornworm. When they are ready to pupate, they break through the caterpillar’s body and form white cocoons on its back. The caterpillar eventually dies.

A hornworm with these cocoons has generally stopped feeding normally, so leaving it in place does not mean accepting the same level of crop damage. Adult wasps will emerge from the cocoons and search for additional hornworms to parasitize. Crushing the caterpillar or spraying it destroys this natural-control cycle.

The cocoons are not eggs, and the hornworm is not recovering. It is being used as a host by the developing wasps.

What to do when you see white cocoons

  1. Do not crush, spray, or remove the cocoons.
  2. Leave the hornworm on the tomato plant if it is in a reasonably sheltered location.
  3. If it is exposed to traffic, pets, heavy rain, or other disturbance, move it gently to another sheltered plant nearby.
  4. Continue checking the rest of the plant for un-parasitized hornworms and fresh damage.

Handle the caterpillar carefully. The horn at its rear cannot sting or puncture skin; it is harmless.

When killing a tomato hornworm is justified

“Never kill a tomato hornworm” is too broad. Remove an un-parasitized hornworm when it is causing unacceptable damage, particularly if you notice:

  • Large areas of missing leaves or nearly bare stems.
  • Chewed holes or feeding damage on green or ripening fruit.
  • Several caterpillars on a small plant.
  • Fresh dark green or black droppings, called frass, beneath the foliage.
  • Damage that is increasing during the growing season.

Hornworms are large caterpillars and can consume foliage very quickly. One or two may heavily defoliate a tomato plant within a few days, which is a sensible reason to intervene rather than wait for more damage.

How to remove one by hand

  1. Inspect the plant, especially upper foliage, and look underneath leaves for frass.
  2. Check the caterpillar’s back for white wasp cocoons before touching it.
  3. Grip an un-parasitized hornworm firmly and pull it from the stem. Large caterpillars can hold on tightly, so more force may be needed than expected.
  4. Place it in a container of soapy water.
  5. Inspect nearby tomato plants and other nightshade-family plants for additional caterpillars.

For most home gardens, hand-picking is effective and avoids unnecessary pesticide use. If children or pets are present, keep the container and soapy water out of reach and wash hands after gardening.

How to identify a tomato hornworm

Tomato hornworms are the larval stage of the five-spotted hawkmoth, Manduca quinquemaculata. Tobacco hornworms, Manduca sexta, look similar and also feed on tomato plants.

Useful identification clues include:

  • A large green caterpillar, potentially about 4 inches long.
  • A horn-like projection at the rear.
  • Large dark droppings beneath the plant.
  • Tomato hornworms usually have eight V-shaped markings on each side.
  • Tobacco hornworms usually have seven diagonal white stripes and a red horn.

The adult moth is not the plant-damaging stage. After metamorphosis, it becomes a large hawk, sphinx, or hummingbird moth. Adults drink flower nectar through long, tube-like mouthparts and may hover around flowers at dusk. That does not make a feeding caterpillar harmless: the larval stage is the one that damages tomatoes.

If hand-picking is not enough

For a serious infestation, treat young caterpillars before they become large and cause severe defoliation. Options commonly recommended by extension services include:

Option Important limitation
Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt) The caterpillar must eat it. It works best on young larvae and is relatively selective for caterpillars.
Spinosad Effective against chewing caterpillars, but toxic to bees while wet. Avoid applying it to blooming plants visited by bees.
Insecticidal soap Must contact the caterpillar directly and has little residual activity.

Use only a product registered for the crop and follow the current label, including any harvest interval. Product formulations, permitted uses, and availability can change. Do not spray a hornworm carrying white cocoons.

Monitoring and prevention

  • Inspect tomato plants regularly during the growing season.
  • Look at upper foliage and check below the plant for frass.
  • Remove nightshade-family weeds that can provide alternate host plants.
  • Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides when possible because they can kill parasitoid wasps and other natural enemies.
  • After the season, cultivation or tilling can destroy some overwintering pupae, although it also disturbs soil life. Consider that trade-off before disturbing soil.

Frequent inspection helps you distinguish a damaging, un-parasitized caterpillar from one that is already contributing to biological control.

Common claims that need correcting

“You should never kill a tomato hornworm.”

Not quite. Leave parasitized hornworms so the wasps can emerge, but remove un-parasitized caterpillars when they are damaging the crop.

“The white things are hornworm eggs.”

No. They are pupal cocoons made by braconid wasps developing from inside the hornworm.

“The horn can sting.”

No. The rear horn is harmless and cannot sting or puncture skin.

“Hornworms are beneficial because they become pollinating moths.”

That is incomplete. The adult moth feeds on nectar, but the caterpillar is a plant-eating stage that can seriously damage tomatoes.

“Pesticides are always necessary.”

Usually not in a home garden. Monitoring and physical removal are often enough, while targeted treatments can be considered when hand-picking fails.

FAQ

Should I kill a tomato hornworm with white cocoons on its back?

No. Leave it in place or move it gently to a sheltered plant nearby. The white cocoons belong to parasitic braconid wasps, which are killing the hornworm and will help control other hornworms when the adult wasps emerge.

Can a tomato hornworm sting my dog, cat, or me?

No. The horn-like projection at the rear is harmless and cannot sting or puncture skin. Still, avoid letting pets eat garden insects or contact plants treated with pesticides.

What is the quickest way to get rid of tomato hornworms?

Inspect the caterpillar for white cocoons, then hand-pick any un-parasitized hornworm and place it in soapy water. Check the plant and nearby tomatoes for additional caterpillars and frass.

Are tomato hornworms poisonous to pets?

The cited extension guidance identifies the rear horn as harmless, but it does not establish tomato hornworms as a pet food or give a universal safety guarantee if a pet eats one. Prevent pets from eating garden pests, especially if the plant has been treated, and contact a veterinarian if a pet consumes an unknown insect or shows symptoms.

The Bottom Line

Do not kill a tomato hornworm automatically. Check its back first: white, rice-like cocoons mean parasitic wasps are developing and the caterpillar should be left alone. If there are no cocoons and the hornworm is stripping leaves or eating fruit, hand-pick it and place it in soapy water. This targeted approach protects the tomato plant while preserving one of its most useful natural controls.
