A $10,000 Rachael Ray Save Them All Grant supported reduced fees and a year of themed events. A Best Friends Animal Society feature published December 5, 2017, reported that the nonprofit had hoped to place 225 cats but had sent more than 400 cats home by publication time. The story also describes a fearful cat named Daisy, whose adoption depended on patient, individualized care as much as on the public promotion.
Those figures belong to that historical account. They are not a current event calendar, a current grant offer, or a controlled study proving that discounts alone produced the result.

What the 2017 story actually records
Nicole Hamilton’s December 5, 2017, feature for Best Friends Animal Society profiles Snake River Animal Shelter, a nonprofit partner in the Best Friends Network. The shelter created the Catapalooza Fund after receiving a $10,000 Rachael Ray Save Them All Grant. The fund was used to lower cat-adoption fees and make adoption events easier for the public to notice and join.

The shelter’s stated goal for 2017 was 225 cat adoptions. By the time the feature appeared, it reported that more than 400 cats had gone home. The account also says the shelter emptied completely twice during that year. “More than 400” is an attributed figure, not a precise audited total, and the feature does not describe a comparison group or a study that could separate the effect of lower fees from the effect of publicity, seasonal demand, staffing, or other changes.

The campaign was not one single sale. It was a sequence of playful, recognizable events intended to give potential adopters a reason to visit. The approach made the shelter feel like a welcoming community destination while preserving the ordinary work of matching each cat with a suitable home.
How the Catapalooza campaign worked
Grant money lowered the first barrier
Adoption fees can be a visible obstacle for families who are already considering a shelter cat. The grant let Snake River reduce that charge rather than asking the shelter to absorb every discount from its operating budget. Kristin Sanger, the shelter’s executive director, said the grant had “allowed us to dramatically reduce the cost of adoptions for cats” and had helped the organization leverage “nearly 100 percent in matching funds.” Her statement describes the shelter’s reported financing outcome in 2017; it does not establish a standard matching ratio for other organizations.
Events supplied a reason to pay attention
Instead of advertising an undifferentiated discount, the shelter attached adoption opportunities to themes that were easy to remember and share locally. The feature lists the following 2017 examples:
| Event | What the feature says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cinco de Cato | Cat adoptions cost $5. | A time-limited, highly visible fee promotion reported for 2017. |
| Black Friday | The promotion highlighted black cats. | A themed spotlight, not evidence that black cats had a particular adoption outcome. |
| My Furry Valentine | A Valentine-themed adoption event. | A seasonal hook for outreach. |
| St. Patrick’s Day adoptions | An event built around the holiday. | A local-awareness idea described in the historical calendar. |
| August Caturday | A Saturday event using a cat-related pun. | A named event, not a standing monthly program. |
| Meow Luau | A luau-themed adoption promotion. | A playful format intended to make a shelter visit approachable. |
| Feline Groovy | A cat-themed event name. | Another example of the campaign’s varied creative framing. |
| 12 Strays of Christmas | A planned Christmas feature mentioned by the article. | Planned in the 2017 story; current availability is not established. |
The only specific price in the account is the $5 Cinco de Cato fee. The other names do not come with published prices, eligibility rules, attendance counts, or separate adoption totals. Treating them as current offers would go beyond what the feature says.
Why the creative framing mattered
A fee reduction answers “How much does adoption cost?” A theme answers “Why should I visit this week?” That distinction is important for a small shelter competing for limited local attention. A recognizable holiday or pun can give supporters a message to forward, a date to put on a calendar, and a simple way to talk about shelter cats without needing a long explanation.

Melissa Lipani, identified in the feature as a Best Friends Network specialist for the mountain west region, described the objective this way: “We were looking for a way to get the community excited about pet adoptions and encourage them to see their local shelters and rescue groups as the best places to find their next family member.” She also said, “I was blown away by their application and the fun ideas they generated to help adopt out more cats throughout the year.” Those comments explain the outreach logic, but they are not an independent measurement of which event performed best.
Repeated, varied events can also reach different audiences. Someone who ignores a general adoption announcement may notice a Black Friday message, a Valentine event, or a Saturday visit that fits a day off. The historical story does not provide audience demographics or channel-by-channel results, so this is a reasonable explanation of the tactic rather than a measured finding from Snake River.
Daisy’s adoption shows the part a discount cannot do
Daisy had been abandoned at an apartment complex and was wary of people. The shelter did not force an immediate social interaction. Staff gave her space and moved her to an office where she felt safer. During a Caturday event, an adopter met Daisy and took her home.
That sequence matters because a public campaign can bring someone through the door, but it cannot by itself make a frightened animal ready for adoption. Daisy needed an environment in which her behavior could be understood rather than mistaken for permanent unfriendliness. The event created the meeting; patient handling created the conditions in which the meeting could succeed.
For adopters, Daisy’s story is a reminder to ask how a cat behaves in different settings and what support the shelter recommends. For shelter teams, it illustrates why event planning and animal-care planning must be connected. A crowded promotion needs quiet spaces, staff who can read stress signals, and a way to let a cat opt out of attention.

Available in 3 sizes (15"x19", 18"x27", 22"x34") to suit kittens, small dogs, or senior cats, it’s the go-to heated cat bed for warmth anywhere your pet loves to nap.
What the reported numbers do—and do not—prove
The feature’s comparison is striking: a goal of 225 cats and a reported total of more than 400 cats gone home by publication time. The shelter also reported emptying completely twice in 2017. Kristin Sanger said that the emptying helped the organization pull more cats from the municipal shelter and accept more owner-surrendered animals so they would not have to burden the municipal shelter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese statements describe an important operational effect: available kennel space can allow a shelter to help additional animals. They do not establish that the grant or any one themed event caused every adoption. The article supplies no pre-campaign baseline, control shelter, event attendance data, average time to adoption, return rate, or accounting of how many adoptions used each promotion. “More than 400” should therefore remain attributed to the 2017 Best Friends feature rather than rewritten as a precise, independently verified outcome.
Several factors could have moved at the same time: the reduced fees, the novelty of the events, social sharing, seasonal adoption patterns, staff effort, the cats’ ages and health, and the shelter’s ability to keep kennels available. A careful reader can credit the campaign with creating opportunities without claiming that a single ingredient explains the whole result.

Snake River’s story is historical, but its decision process offers a useful planning framework. A different shelter should verify its own finances, animal-care capacity, local rules, and current grant terms before copying any part of it.
1. Define the bottleneck
Determine whether the main obstacle is the fee, low public awareness, limited hours, an intimidating adoption process, or a shortage of suitable foster and kennel space. A discount is a poor solution if visitors cannot meet cats safely or applications cannot be processed promptly.

- Easy to Wash: thanks to the soft material, machine washable and easy to dry; When cushion dog cat fleece blanket is dirty, it is easy to clean and won't waste too much time on this, let you have more time to accompany cute pets, don't let pets become their own burden
2. Set a discount budget
Calculate the maximum fee reduction the organization can sustain, then identify restricted funds, matching requirements, and the period covered. Snake River’s $10,000 grant and nearly 100 percent matching statement belong to its 2017 arrangement; another shelter should not assume the same funding terms.
3. Build a calendar rather than one flash sale
Choose a manageable number of dates, assign a distinct theme to each, and publish the exact fee, hours, eligibility rules, and contact method. The 2017 calendar used different cultural and seasonal hooks, but the feature does not tell us how many events a modern shelter should run.
4. Protect animal welfare during the promotion
Create quiet retreat areas, cap visitor flow if necessary, and give staff authority to pause introductions. Record each cat’s stress signals and preferred handling. Daisy’s move to a safer office demonstrates why a shy cat may need a different setting from the main event floor.
5. Track outcomes that can be explained
At minimum, record event date, number of visitors, applications, completed adoptions, fee waived, returns, and the source of each adopter’s referral. Compare those figures with a clearly defined earlier period, while noting other changes. This will not create a randomized experiment, but it will make future claims more transparent than a single headline total.
6. Follow up after adoption
Provide the same counseling, medical information, and return guidance for discounted adoptions as for full-fee adoptions. A lower price should remove a financial barrier, not lower the standard for matching a cat with a household.

How adopters should read a themed event
A playful name does not mean the shelter is treating adoption casually. Ask what the fee includes, whether the promotion applies to every cat, what medical care has been completed, and what happens if the match does not work. Meet the cat in a calm area when possible, and tell staff about children, other pets, housing restrictions, and the amount of time the cat will spend alone.
Daisy’s experience also argues against judging a cat after one brief encounter. A cat that hides during a busy event may behave differently in a quiet room or home. Ask staff what they observed over time and what transition plan they recommend.
What remains historical
The Catapalooza Fund, the named events, the $5 Cinco de Cato price, the $10,000 grant, and the reported 2017 adoption figures should all be treated as elements of the December 5, 2017, feature. The account does not establish that Snake River still runs those promotions, that the grant is still open, or that the shelter has the same policies today. Anyone seeking a current event or donation opportunity should confirm details directly with the shelter through up-to-date official information.
The durable lesson is narrower and more useful than a promise of guaranteed results: creative outreach can make a reduced-fee opportunity visible, while individualized care determines whether a particular cat is ready to connect with an adopter. In Daisy’s case, both parts were necessary.
