The calf’s mother is Namunyak, and its sex had not been confirmed in the reports published at the time. The birth was the second recorded there in less than two years.
What happened in the Chyulu Hills?
Big Life Foundation announced the birth on November 7, 2025. The calf was born in the wild in the Chyulu Hills of southeastern Kenya, a remote landscape where rangers monitor rhinos through patrols and camera traps. Big Life said the birth brought the known eastern black rhino population in its area of operation to nine.
In reporting published November 12, ABC News said rangers first suspected a calf was present after finding small tracks following a mother rhino’s tracks. Camera traps operated by Big Life Foundation and the Kenya Wildlife Service later confirmed the mother and calf. The calf was thought to be about six months old at the time of that report.
Who is the calf’s mother, and what is known about the calf?
Big Life identified the mother as Namunyak, said to be about 14 years old and having her first calf. The organization says her name means “blessed” in Maa.

The calf’s sex had not been confirmed in the November 2025 accounts. Amy Baird, deputy director of Big Life Foundation USA, told ABC News: “We haven’t gotten good enough photos to confirm that. It’s usually hiding behind its mom.” The reports described camera-trap images and field signs; they did not say that the calf was handled or directly examined.
How does this birth fit the recent history of the local population?
The Chyulu Hills had another reported rhino birth in November 2023. In a September 22, 2025 update, Big Life said that earlier calf had been photographed healthy with its mother, and described the local count as eight before Namunyak’s calf was announced.

How are rhinos protected in this difficult terrain?
The Chyulu Hills lie between Kenya’s Tsavo and Amboseli ecosystems. Their volcanic ridges, steep slopes, and thorny vegetation make monitoring challenging. Baird described the area to ABC News as “heavily volcanic, razor-sharp lava, lots of thorny acacia trees, very steep terrain,” adding that it is difficult to monitor and protect.
Big Life says it protects the local rhinos in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service. Its Q3 2025 operational report recorded the following figures for that report period; they are not current counts:

Why does the Chyulu population matter?
Big Life’s announcement places the birth within a very small population. The title-matching report and ABC News also described the Chyulu group as distinct or genetically independent, attributing that characterization to Royal African Safaris and the Kenya Rhino Project. Those reports do not establish a specific genetic mechanism, so the claim should be understood as an attributed description rather than a detailed scientific finding.
The reported count of nine belongs to Big Life’s November 2025 announcement and Q3 2025 operational reporting. These sources do not establish a current 2026 population count or the calf’s present condition. Nor do they offer a basis for expecting visitors to see this calf.
