The clearest example is the invasive sea lamprey, a parasitic fish that attaches to a host, rasps through its skin and feeds on body fluids. Its documented danger is primarily to fish and fisheries, not to ordinary swimmers. Official sources reviewed for this article describe lamprey attacks on fish and do not establish a meaningful swimmer hazard, although that evidence cannot prove that human contact is impossible.
What “dangerous” means in the Great Lakes
The word dangerous can describe two different questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Is a fish dangerous to other fish and the ecosystem? Sea lampreys clearly meet that definition. They are invasive in the Great Lakes and can kill valuable native and introduced fish.
- Is a fish dangerous to people in the water? The official material available for this subject does not document sea lampreys as a material threat to swimmers. It discusses fish hosts, wounds and fishery losses instead.
Keeping those meanings separate prevents a frightening but unsupported conclusion that the lakes contain a people-eating predator. The Great Lakes do contain fish with severe ecological effects, but the evidence here concerns attacks on fish rather than routine attacks on humans.
The sea lamprey is the fish that matters most to this question
A parasitic fish, not a conventional predator
The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is native to the Atlantic Ocean, not to the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission classifies it as an invasive species. Instead of biting prey with jaws, it uses a circular oral suction disk lined with sharp teeth. After gripping a host, the lamprey uses its rasping tongue to break through scales and skin, then feeds on the fish’s body fluids.

That feeding method explains why photographs of lampreys can look alarming. A lamprey is physically attached to another fish, and the wound can remain serious after the parasite detaches. The Commission reports that Great Lakes host fish often fail to survive: some die during parasitism, while others die later from infections in the feeding wound.
Which Great Lakes fish are attacked?
The Commission lists a broad range of hosts, including lake trout, brown trout, lake sturgeon, lake whitefish, ciscoes, burbot, walleye, catfish, Chinook salmon, coho salmon and rainbow trout or steelhead. These species support commercial, tribal and recreational fisheries, so lamprey damage affects both wild populations and human use of the lakes.
| Question | What the evidence establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| How does a lamprey feed? | It grips a fish with a tooth-lined suction disk, rasps through skin with its tongue and consumes body fluids. | It does not establish that this feeding behavior is directed at swimmers. |
| What happens to host fish? | Hosts may die during the attack or from infection in the resulting wound. | It does not provide a human-injury rate. |
| Why are lampreys considered dangerous? | They are invasive parasites that can damage fish populations and fisheries. | It does not justify calling every introduced Great Lakes fish dangerous. |
How sea lampreys reached the Great Lakes
Niagara Falls was once a natural barrier
Before the modern canal system, Niagara Falls blocked sea lampreys from moving out of Lake Ontario into the upper Great Lakes. That barrier was bypassed when the Welland Canal created a navigable route around the falls. Lampreys used the new connection to reach the other lakes.

The invasion spread through the Great Lakes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This was not a sudden appearance of a new native fish; it was an expansion made possible by a human-built waterway that connected habitats previously separated by a major waterfall.
Why the route changed the whole fishery
Once established, lampreys could reproduce in tributaries and return to the lakes to feed. Their impact was especially severe on lake trout. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission reports that Canada and the United States harvested about 15 million pounds of lake trout each year in the upper Great Lakes before the invasion. By the early 1960s, the annual catch had fallen to approximately 300,000 pounds.
During the period of peak lamprey abundance, the Commission also reported that up to 85% of fish that had not been killed by lampreys showed attack wounds. Those figures are historical measures of the invasion’s peak impact, not current lake-by-lake population estimates. They show why lamprey control became a central Great Lakes management priority.

Are sea lampreys dangerous to swimmers?
The available evidence does not establish a meaningful ordinary swimming risk from sea lampreys. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and NOAA describe lampreys as parasites of fish and focus on their effects on hosts, fisheries and ecosystems. Those sources do not document a pattern of lampreys attacking swimmers or a quantified rate of lamprey injuries to people.
That is a narrower statement than “lampreys can never touch a person.” The reviewed evidence cannot prove an absolute impossibility of human contact, and it does not provide a comprehensive risk assessment for every fish-related injury in every Great Lakes location. It does support a practical distinction: a lamprey’s established ecological danger is to fish, not a documented routine threat to people who swim.

Consequently, seeing the word dangerous in a description of sea lampreys should not be read as a warning that the Great Lakes have a known human-biting predator. It refers to their parasitic effect on fish and the damage that effect caused to fisheries.

Sea lampreys are one example within a much larger history of species introductions. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission states that more than 180 aquatic species have been introduced to the basin. Most did not establish lasting populations or are barely noticeable, while a smaller fraction became invasive.

That distinction matters. “Introduced” describes how a species arrived; it does not automatically mean that the species is dangerous to people, harmful to native wildlife or even established. The lamprey is notable because it both established itself and caused measurable ecological and fishery damage. The existence of many other introduced species is not evidence that all of them pose a comparable danger.

How lamprey control works today
Targeting larvae in tributaries
Sea lampreys spend an early life stage as larvae in tributary streams. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission’s control program uses lampricides against these larvae while they are concentrated in those waterways. Treating tributaries allows managers to target lampreys before they mature and return to the lakes to parasitize fish.
Limiting adult movement and reproduction
Managers also use barriers and traps to limit adult lampreys’ upstream movement and reproduction. These tools complement larval treatments: barriers and traps reduce access to spawning habitat, while lampricides reduce the next generation in streams.
What the 90% figure means
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says collaborative control efforts have reduced invasive sea lamprey populations by 90% in most areas of the Great Lakes. This is the Service’s broad summary of program results, not a claim that every lake or tributary has experienced the same reduction. It also does not mean lampreys were eradicated. Control remains ongoing because surviving adults can reproduce and treated watersheds must continue to be monitored.
The program’s purpose is ecological protection: reducing wounds and deaths in fish populations, preserving fisheries and preventing lampreys from returning to former peak abundance.
What a swimmer should take from the evidence
- Do not confuse an ecological threat with a swimmer warning. Sea lampreys are dangerous to fish; the reviewed official sources do not establish a material routine hazard to swimmers.
- Do not assume every introduced species is harmful. More than 180 aquatic species have been introduced, but most did not establish or are barely noticeable.
- Do not treat historical fishery losses as current counts. The 15-million-pound, 300,000-pound and 85% figures describe historical conditions reported by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
- Recognize that control is ongoing. A 90% reduction in most areas is a program result, not eradication and not a uniform value for every location.
Local beach rules, water conditions, fishing equipment and handling injuries are separate safety questions. The sources for this article do not provide a comprehensive inventory of every fish that could injure a person or a quantitative swimmer-risk assessment, so those issues should not be inferred from the lamprey evidence.
Bottom line: dangerous to fish, not shown to be a swimmer threat
Yes, dangerous fish live in the Great Lakes—but the strongest documented example is dangerous primarily to other fish. Invasive sea lampreys attach with a suction disk, rasp through skin and feed on body fluids, killing many hosts directly or through wound infections. Their spread through the Welland Canal helped drive a historic collapse in lake-trout harvest, and coordinated lampricide, barrier and trapping programs have since reduced populations by 90% in most areas according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The evidence reviewed does not establish sea lampreys as a meaningful everyday danger to swimmers, and it does not support labeling every introduced Great Lakes fish as dangerous.
