Darwin’s Natural Selections is a raw, frozen cat-food service delivered through online meal plans and subscriptions. The company says its cat recipes are complete and balanced for all life stages, meet or exceed AAFCO guidelines, and are reviewed by veterinary nutritionists. Those are company statements, not independent confirmation.
The most important qualification is food safety. FDA notices dated October 12, 2023, September 20, 2024, and July 29, 2025 document pathogens in specifically identified Darwin’s lots. The September 2024 and October 2023 notices include cat-food lots; the July 2025 notice concerns specified dog-food lots. These advisories do not establish that every current Darwin’s product is contaminated. Check the exact lot number on your package against current FDA notices before feeding.

What Darwin’s Natural Cat Food is
Darwin’s Natural Selections is a direct-to-consumer raw cat-food line. Darwin’s says it uses fresh, whole ingredients, prepares the food raw, freezes it, and ships it to customers. Instead of buying a standard retail bag or can, you complete an online meal plan and receive frozen portions on a recurring order.
The service model can be convenient for someone who wants a scheduled supply of one food, but it also creates obligations that do not apply to shelf-stable food: freezer space, reliable delivery, controlled thawing, and careful sanitation. Your cat’s exact recipe, package size, lot code, and current label are more useful than a broad description of the brand.

How the direct-order model works
- Choose a cat meal plan. Darwin’s online process is designed to match an order to a cat’s needs rather than sell a single universal daily ration.
- Receive frozen food. Keep the shipment frozen as directed on the package. Plan freezer capacity before ordering; raw portions take substantially more space than a small bag of dry food.
- Thaw portions safely. Use the package directions and keep raw food separate from food prepared for people. Do not improvise a storage period when the label does not provide one.
- Manage the recurring order. Review the current subscription controls, delivery schedule, and cancellation terms shown at checkout. These commercial details can change, so an older description should not be treated as a current promise.
Darwin’s has stated that free shipping applies to most U.S. orders over 20 pounds, but shipping policies are volatile. Confirm the current threshold, geographic coverage, and any delivery fees before placing an order.
What the company says about recipes and nutrition
Darwin’s makes several formulation and quality claims. They should be read as the manufacturer’s position unless you have inspected current documentation for the specific recipe you plan to feed.
| Darwin’s statement | What a reader can establish from that statement | What remains unverified here |
|---|---|---|
| Recipes are complete and balanced for all life stages. | The company intends its cat formulas to provide the recognized nutrient profile for kittens, adults, and seniors. | No independent confirmation is provided for the current nutrient profile and adequacy statement for a particular SKU. |
| Recipes meet or exceed AAFCO guidelines. | Darwin’s says its formulations are designed around AAFCO nutrient guidance. | AAFCO compliance should be confirmed on the current package label or product documentation, not inferred from a general brand statement. |
| Recipes are reviewed by a panel of veterinary nutritionists and developed with veterinary and animal-nutrition experts. | The company describes professional input during formulation. | The identities, scope of review, and independent assessment of each current recipe remain unspecified. |
| Finished food is validated by a third-party laboratory through direct analysis, according to an older FAQ. | The company says it performs finished-product testing. | No laboratory reports are provided, and testing frequency, methods, laboratories, and current applicability are unspecified. |
For a specific purchase, look for the nutritional adequacy statement, guaranteed analysis, calorie information, ingredients, feeding directions, and storage instructions on the current label. A recipe can be appropriate in principle while still being the wrong choice for an individual cat with kidney disease, urinary disease, food allergy, obesity, or another condition. Ask your veterinarian to interpret the label when your cat has a medical diagnosis, takes medication, is pregnant, or is growing.

Is Darwin’s raw cat food complete and balanced?
Darwin’s says yes for its cat recipes and all life stages. That answer is an attributed company claim, not a finding that every present-day package has been independently verified. The company also says the formulas meet or exceed AAFCO guidelines and are reviewed by veterinary nutritionists.
Before feeding, verify three things on the exact product in your freezer:
- The package is labeled for cats, not dogs.
- The label carries a nutritional adequacy statement for the life stage you intend to feed.
- The lot and recipe match the current product information and are not named in a current FDA notice.
Do not treat a food labeled for “all life stages” as automatically suitable for every cat’s medical needs. “Complete and balanced” addresses nutrient adequacy under the stated standard; it does not diagnose whether a raw diet is appropriate for your household or your cat’s condition.

Is Darwin’s cat food safe? Read the FDA notices by date and species
Safety cannot be answered with a blanket yes or no. The FDA notices below concern named products and lots. They are regulatory findings and instructions for those lots, not proof that every Darwin’s package is affected.

| October 12, 2023 | An update added a specific lot of Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain-Free Chicken Recipe for Cats to a Salmonella advisory. | Treat the named cat lot as affected. Do not expand the notice to every chicken recipe or every current cat-food lot. |
| September 20, 2024 | FDA samples of certain Darwin’s Natural Selections foods tested positive for Salmonella; one sample also tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The notice identified particular frozen 2-pound packages and lot numbers. | Only the listed packages and lots fall within that notice. Compare your package code with the FDA listing before feeding. |
| July 29, 2025 | The advisory covered specified Darwin’s dog-food lots: a beef sample tested positive for E. coli O157:H7, while chicken and duck samples tested positive for Salmonella. FDA also described an ill child and a genetic match between the E. coli from a closed dog-food sample and a stool sample. | This notice concerns dog products, not a finding that the listed pathogen was detected in a cat-food lot. Do not use it to claim that all Darwin’s cat food is contaminated. |
The dates matter because advisories can be updated and a newer notice can supersede an older product list. Search the FDA’s current recall and advisory pages for Darwin’s, then compare the complete lot code, recipe name, package size, and product species. A product that is not listed in one historical notice is not automatically cleared forever; it simply is not identified by that notice.
What to do if your package matches a notice
- Stop feeding it immediately. Do not taste the food yourself and do not give it to another animal.
- Separate the package. Keep it away from other food while you record the recipe, package size, lot number, and any date printed on the label.
- Dispose of it securely. Follow the FDA notice’s disposal direction so children, pets, and wildlife cannot retrieve it.
- Clean and disinfect contact points. FDA instructions include cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, utensils, bowls, freezer areas, and other places that contacted the affected food.
- Monitor people and pets. Contact a veterinarian if your cat becomes ill after eating a listed product. Seek medical advice for a person who may have been exposed and develops concerning symptoms, especially a child or someone medically vulnerable.
If the lot does not match a listed notice, continue to follow the label’s frozen-storage and handling directions and check for newer FDA updates. Absence from an older notice is not a substitute for checking current information.

Raw-food handling in a real household
Raw frozen food adds a sanitation routine. The objective is to prevent the food, its juices, and contaminated utensils from contacting ready-to-eat food or surfaces used by children.
- Designate a washable preparation area and dedicated utensils or bowls.
- Wash hands with soap and water after handling the food or touching the package.
- Wash bowls and utensils after every meal rather than topping up a used bowl.
- Clean and disinfect counters, refrigerator or freezer handles, and any surface touched by leaking packaging.
- Keep thawing food contained so juices cannot drip onto produce or other foods.
- Remove leftovers according to the package directions; do not keep them indefinitely because the food began frozen.
- Use freezer-safe storage containers if you transfer portions, and label each container with the recipe and lot code so you can act quickly if an advisory is issued.
Households with young children, older adults, pregnant people, or immunocompromised residents should discuss the added exposure considerations with a healthcare professional before choosing a raw diet. A sealed commercial package does not eliminate the handling risk once it is opened.
Can you feed Darwin’s dog food to a cat?
An older Darwin’s FAQ says its dog meals do not contain enough taurine for cats and advises taurine supplementation if a cat is fed those meals. Because that FAQ is older, do not assume its wording describes every current dog formula or a safe long-term plan.

- Is Your Dog a Picky Eater? We stick to simple formulas rich in natural flavors, that could tempt a fussy eater. No hassle with pills, powder, tablets or capsules.
The practical choice is to feed a recipe labeled for cats. Cats have species-specific nutrient requirements, and a dog-food label is not evidence that a meal is complete and balanced for a cat. If circumstances leave you with dog food temporarily, ask your veterinarian what to do rather than calculating a supplement yourself. Confirm the current label and formulation before making any cross-species substitution.
Darwin’s strengths and limitations
| Potential strength | Why it may matter | Limitation or question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Raw, frozen delivery | Appeals to owners who specifically want a raw format and scheduled home delivery. | Requires freezer capacity, reliable receiving, controlled thawing, and sanitation. |
| Online meal planning | Can simplify recurring portions and reorder decisions. | Subscription settings, delivery areas, and shipping charges must be checked at checkout. |
| Company nutrition claims | Darwin’s states that recipes are complete and balanced for all life stages, meet or exceed AAFCO guidance, and receive veterinary-nutrition review. | Those claims are not independently verified for a current SKU; inspect the current label and ask your veterinarian about medical diets. |
| Lot-specific FDA history | Public notices provide concrete lot numbers and handling instructions rather than a vague quality warning. | The existence of advisories means every shipment should be checked against current FDA notices. |
| Cat-specific recipes | A cat-labeled formula avoids the taurine concern described in the older dog-food FAQ. | Do not substitute dog meals without current label information and veterinary advice. |
Who is a reasonable fit for Darwin’s?
Darwin’s may fit an owner who deliberately wants raw frozen food, has dependable freezer space, can maintain a cleaning routine, and is willing to verify lot numbers. The direct model is most useful when recurring delivery is genuinely convenient rather than when a household needs food that can sit in a cupboard.
Choose a different format or obtain veterinary guidance first if your household cannot safely handle raw food, lacks freezer capacity, has frequent delivery interruptions, or includes people at elevated risk from foodborne pathogens. A cat with a therapeutic diet requirement should be managed with the veterinarian who prescribed that diet, regardless of the marketing language on a general-purpose product.

How to evaluate a shipment before your cat eats it
- Confirm species and recipe. Read the front and back labels; make sure the package is a cat formula and the recipe is appropriate for your cat’s life stage.
- Record identifying details. Photograph or write down the product name, package weight, lot code, and dates before placing portions in the freezer.
- Check current FDA notices. Look for an exact match, not merely a similar recipe name. Match species, package size, and lot number.
- Inspect the package. If it is damaged, leaking, or arrives outside the temperature conditions specified by the seller, isolate it and contact Darwin’s for current instructions.
- Review feeding directions. Use the current label for portion guidance, thawing, and storage; do not rely on a cached FAQ or a social-media summary.
- Watch your cat. Any persistent vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, fever, refusal to eat, or other unusual sign warrants a call to your veterinarian.
Bottom line on Darwin’s Natural Cat Food
Darwin’s offers a clearly defined raw-frozen, subscription-based cat-food format, and the company states that its recipes are complete and balanced for all life stages and meet or exceed AAFCO guidelines. The evidence also includes dated FDA advisories naming specific cat and dog lots for Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and E. coli O157:H7 findings. The responsible conclusion is neither a blanket endorsement nor a claim that the whole line is unsafe: verify the exact lot against current FDA notices, follow strict raw-food hygiene, use cat-specific labels, and involve your veterinarian when your cat or household has special health risks.
