Navajo Reservoir (usually called Navajo Lake) is the best-supported answer to “What is the deepest lake in New Mexico?” The Bureau of Reclamation lists 388 feet (118 meters) of water at the dam when the reservoir is full. That is a full-pool depth at one location, not a fixed depth everywhere in the reservoir.
A separate Bureau project page gives 381.6 feet as the hydraulic height, identified as the normal operating depth at the dam. Those figures describe different conditions, so neither should be presented as an all-purpose depth for every day or every part of Navajo Lake.

The short answer: Navajo Reservoir
Navajo Reservoir is the strongest sourced answer when “deepest” means the greatest documented depth at a New Mexico reservoir’s dam. The Bureau of Reclamation’s Navajo Dam fact sheet states: “Depth of water at dam when full | 388 feet (118 meters).” The fact sheet was last updated April 22, 2026, and places the reservoir mainly in northern New Mexico, with several miles extending into southern Colorado. Navajo Lake is also a major recreation destination. New Mexico State Parks describes it as the state’s second-largest lake and lists boating, fishing, hiking, camping, marinas and boat docks at Navajo Lake State Park. Navajo Lake State Park

“Deepest lake in New Mexico” needs a measurement qualifier because the available sources do not provide one consistent bathymetric survey ranking every natural lake, reservoir and individual basin in the state. The careful conclusion is therefore: Navajo Reservoir is the best-supported deepest lake under the Bureau’s full-pool depth-at-the-dam measure.
Why Navajo Lake has two different official depth figures
Readers often encounter 388 feet and 381.6 feet and assume one must be an error. They are not competing measurements of exactly the same condition.
388 feet: full-pool depth at the dam
The Reclamation fact sheet reports 388 feet (118 meters) as the “Depth of water at dam when full.” “When full” is the key qualification: it describes the water column at the dam when the reservoir reaches its stated full condition. It does not mean every cove, arm or shoreline point is 388 feet deep.

381.6 feet: normal operating depth at the dam
The Bureau’s project-dimensions page lists 381.6 feet as “Hydraulic Height (Normal Operating Depth at Dam).” Navajo Dam project dimensions Hydraulic height is a project specification tied to normal operation, while the 388-foot entry is explicitly tied to a full reservoir.

How to quote the numbers accurately
- Use “388 feet (118 meters) at the dam when full” when answering the direct depth question.
- Use “381.6 feet hydraulic height, listed as normal operating depth at the dam” when discussing the project-dimensions figure.
- Do not average the two numbers or call 388 feet the lake’s uniform depth.
- Keep the reservoir condition and the measurement location in the same sentence as the number.
What the depth means on the ground
A reservoir is not a bowl with one constant bottom. Navajo Reservoir occupies a long, irregular impoundment behind Navajo Dam. Water depth changes with the original river channel, side valleys, submerged terrain and the reservoir’s current elevation. The deepest point reported in the cited material is specifically at the dam, where the water column is greatest under the stated full-pool condition.
Reservoir elevation changes as water is stored, released and used downstream. A visitor standing at a launch ramp may be over much shallower water than the figure on the dam fact sheet. Conversely, a boat route near the old channel can differ substantially from a sheltered cove. A map, shoreline appearance or dock location cannot establish the depth beneath a particular spot.
Depth and elevation are also different concepts. “388 feet of water at the dam” describes the vertical water column from the reservoir surface to the bottom at that location. It is not the same as the dam’s total structural height, the reservoir’s elevation above sea level or the distance from a visitor’s shoreline to the bottom.

The name Bottomless Lakes can make Lea Lake sound deeper than Navajo Lake, but “bottomless” is a nickname for sinkhole lakes, not a literal claim. The New Mexico Environment Department’s 2007 Lakes survey reports a maximum depth of 27.5 meters (90 feet) for Lea Lake. NMED/SWQ-10/1: Lakes 2007

New Mexico State Parks gives the unique sinkhole lakes at Bottomless Lakes a depth range of 17 to 90 feet. Its directory lists non-motorized kayaking at Bottomless Lakes and kayaking at Brantley Lake, while Navajo Lake’s park listing includes boating. New Mexico State Parks park directory
Lea Lake’s 90-foot maximum is a depth for an individual sinkhole lake, based on a 2007 survey. Navajo’s 388-foot figure is a full-pool depth at a dam. They are useful for scale, but they are not measurements taken under identical methods or conditions.

Where Navajo Reservoir is located
Navajo Reservoir lies mainly in northern New Mexico and crosses into southern Colorado. The federal reservoir page identifies developed recreation areas, campgrounds and marinas in New Mexico near the reservoir. Because the waterbody spans a state line, a trip can involve different access points and agencies even though visitors commonly refer to the New Mexico portion as Navajo Lake.
New Mexico’s state-park page is the practical starting point for New Mexico facilities. It lists boating, fishing, hiking and camping, along with marinas and boat docks. Facilities, ramp availability and operating services can vary by site and season.

Planning a visit without mistaking a depth statistic for current conditions
The 388-foot figure is a fixed reference for a stated full condition; it is not a live water-level report. Before driving to the lake, launching a boat or planning shoreline access, check the current official notices.
- Choose the exact access area. Navajo Reservoir has multiple recreation areas, campgrounds and marinas. Confirm which park, ramp or marina serves your intended activity.
- Check current lake conditions. New Mexico State Parks publishes time-sensitive lake-condition information. Its July 29, 2026 conditions page illustrates why water levels, ramp status, restrictions and services should be checked close to departure. Current Lake Conditions Across State Parks
- Confirm boating rules. A listing for boating at Navajo Lake does not establish that every shoreline or every type of craft is permitted at every time. Follow the current park, marina and safety rules.
- Use the depth number for context, not navigation. The dam figure cannot tell you the clearance beneath a boat at a ramp, cove or fishing location. Use posted markers, local charts and on-site instructions where available.
- Recheck conditions on the day. Water elevation, weather, wildfire restrictions, closures and services can change after you make a plan.
Visiting with a dog or other pet
The cited lake pages establish recreation activities, not a universal pet policy. They do not show that dogs are allowed in every building, campground, marina, launch area or swimming location. Check the current rules for the specific Navajo Lake State Park unit or recreation site before bringing a pet.
Prepare for deep, changing water
A dog that is a confident swimmer can still struggle in cold water, wind, boat wake or steep-sided shoreline areas. Keep a properly fitted canine life jacket available near docks and boats, supervise any approach to the water and prevent a pet from entering restricted launch lanes. Do not infer that a calm-looking cove is shallow from its appearance.
Protect paws and hydration
Carry fresh drinking water and a bowl rather than allowing a pet to rely on lake water. Hot sand, rocks, pavement and metal docks can burn paw pads even when the air feels comfortable. Provide shade and breaks, especially during long hikes or boat outings.

Respect other visitors and wildlife

What “deepest” does—and does not—prove
The available authoritative figures support a strong answer for a reservoir-depth question, but they do not constitute a complete statewide ranking. The sources reviewed do not establish a single, consistent bathymetric inventory covering every lake basin, reservoir and natural waterbody in New Mexico.
That limitation matters because rankings can change when researchers use different definitions: maximum point versus average depth, full pool versus normal operation, natural lake versus reservoir, or a modern survey versus an older report. A defensible article therefore names the waterbody, identifies the measurement point and states the reservoir condition.
Under that standard, Navajo Reservoir leads the documented comparison here at 388 feet (118 meters) at the dam when full. Lea Lake remains a notable but much shallower comparison at 90 feet maximum in the 2007 state survey.
