It can describe established breeds as well as experimental types, and a distinctive appearance alone does not establish a breed’s registry status, ancestry, temperament, or health profile.
The available source material supports details on ten named cats, not a complete list of fifteen. Rather than inventing five entries, this guide explains the label and summarizes those ten, with registry and welfare qualifications where they matter.

What “designer cat breed” means
The term is an editorial grouping rather than a formal category with one definition. Some cats described this way are established breeds in particular registries; others may be experimental or recognized differently by different organizations. Check the specific registry’s current directory and standards before treating a name as universally recognized.
It is also useful to separate a domestic breed developed for a particular look from one with wild ancestry. Bengals and Chausies have wild-cat ancestry in their development; an Ocicat’s spotted coat, by contrast, does not mean it has wild ancestors. Breed descriptions are tendencies, not guarantees about an individual cat.

Ten designer-labeled cats and what to know
Scottish Fold
The defining folded ears result from a cartilage mutation. The source article also reports that the mutation can cause degenerative joint disease, making this a substantive welfare concern rather than a cosmetic detail. Anyone considering a Scottish Fold should ask about the cat’s mobility, veterinary history, and the parents’ health.
Bengal
TICA traces Bengals to crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat. The modern breed was developed as a domestic cat with a distinctive spotted or marbled coat. TICA describes Bengals as athletic, curious, active, and trainable; those traits make opportunities for play and enrichment important considerations.

The source article describes the Dwelf as a hairless type developed from Munchkin, American Curl, and Sphynx ancestry, and flags possible skeletal concerns. Those claims are not independently established by a veterinary source in the material available here, so they should be treated as reported concerns, not a complete health assessment. Ask a veterinarian about the individual cat’s needs and health history.

Oriental Shorthair
The source article says Oriental Shorthairs were developed from Siamese cats and other shorthaired breeds to expand the range of coat colors. It describes them as vocal and affectionate, and names progressive retinal atrophy and lymphoma as health concerns. Discuss breed-specific screening with a veterinarian or breeder and ask what testing has been performed.
Ocicat
The source article traces the Ocicat’s background to Abyssinian, Siamese, and American Shorthair cats. Its wild-looking spotted coat does not indicate wild ancestry. The article describes Ocicats as playful and inquisitive, so prospective owners should consider whether they can provide regular interaction and enrichment.

Chausie
The source article describes Chausies as developed from domestic shorthairs and jungle cats. It says TICA accepts them when they are four generations removed from wild ancestors. Because registry language and local rules can change or vary, check the current TICA requirements and the rules that apply where you live before acquiring one.
Burmilla
The source article attributes the Burmilla’s origin to an accidental Burmese–Chinchilla Persian breeding in 1981. It describes a silver-tipped coat and sociable temperament. These are breed-level descriptions, not promises about an individual cat.

Toyger
TICA describes the Toyger as a domestic shorthair companion bred for tiger-like striping, with a striped domestic shorthair and a Bengal among its foundation cats. Recognition depends on the organization: GCCF reports that TICA accepted Toygers for registration in 1993, advanced them to new-breed exhibition classes in 2000, and granted championship recognition in February 2007. GCCF recognition followed in October 2015, with preliminary status in June 2016. These are registry milestones, not evidence of recognition by every registry.
GCCF says Toygers are generally healthy and reports no known breed-specific diseases or conformation-related health problems. Its guidance recommends HCM echocardiography screening and DNA tests for PKDef and Bengal PRA because Bengals contributed to Toyger development. This is GCCF guidance, not a universal mandate; ask the breeder which tests were done and review results with a veterinarian.
Highlander or Highland Lynx
The source article describes curled ears, a short bobtail, and a playful, people-oriented nature, with Jungle Curl and Desert Lynx ancestry. It does not establish the cat’s recognition or naming status across registries. Verify the exact name and recognition with the organization whose standards or registration matter to you.

Havana Brown
The source article says the Havana Brown was developed in the 1950s by crossing Siamese cats with black domestic shorthairs to produce a solid brown coat. The description establishes the reported development history, not a guarantee that every cat marketed under the name has verified pedigree documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess a cat beyond its appearance
- Confirm the name and status. Ask which registry, if any, recognizes the cat and check that organization’s current directory or rules.
- Ask about ancestry. For cats with wild ancestry in their development, request generation and pedigree information. Local restrictions may apply, and the material here does not establish laws for any particular jurisdiction.
- Discuss health and screening. Request veterinary records and any breed-relevant test results. A breed label is not a substitute for an individual health assessment.
- Meet the individual cat. Temperament descriptions are general tendencies. Observe the cat and ask about its behavior, routine, and interaction needs.
- Plan for enrichment where appropriate. TICA describes Bengals as active, and Toyger guidance recommends puzzle toys and interactive engagement. These are options for engagement, not a claim that a particular product is necessary or endorsed.
Why this guide does not claim to list all 15
The source material identifies the title of a fifteen-breed article, but its available excerpt does not establish the complete set of names or details. It supports the ten entries above; the missing entries cannot be reliably supplied from that excerpt. A complete fifteen-item list would require confirmation of the original article’s remaining entries and their details.
