A Devon Rex is a shorthaired cat with a soft, wavy-to-curly coat, very large low-set ears, prominent cheekbones and a short muzzle. Breed profiles describe Devons as active, intelligent, affectionate and intensely people-focused. They shed and produce allergens, so they are not hypoallergenic, and their need for company makes daily interaction an important part of ownership.

This guide explains how to recognize the breed, what its coat care involves, how it may fit into a household, what health information is actually established, and which questions to ask before choosing a kitten or adult. Individual cats can differ substantially from the breed tendencies described here.

What is a Devon Rex cat?

The Devon Rex is a distinct cat breed that originated in Devon, England. According to The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), a curly-haired male kitten appeared in a garden litter in 1959. His owner, Beryl Cox, named him Kirlee. Early breeders thought his coat mutation might be the same as the Cornish Rex mutation, but test breedings showed that the two breeds have different genetic causes for their rexed coats. The International Cat Association (TICA) likewise treats the Devon and Cornish Rex as separate breeds.

“Rex” refers to an unusual texture caused by a coat mutation. In a Devon, the result is generally a short, soft coat that can form loose curls, waves or a suede-like surface. Coat density and texture are variable, and some cats have sparse areas or temporarily thinner fur while growing or moulting.

Breed descriptions are useful for recognizing tendencies, not for predicting one cat perfectly. A Devon can be more or less curly, social, vocal or energetic than another Devon.

What does a Devon Rex look like?

Head, ears and facial features

The breed has a modified wedge-shaped head, large eyes, prominent cheekbones and a short muzzle. Its very large ears sit low on the head and are one of the quickest ways to distinguish a Devon in a photograph. The overall expression can look alert, impish or pixie-like because of the broad ears, high cheekbones and short face.

Body and size

Devons have a muscular, medium-sized frame rather than a delicate toy-cat build. CFA gives a typical adult weight range of six to nine pounds, with males sometimes larger. That is a breed-profile range, not a target weight for an individual cat; a veterinarian should assess whether a particular cat is at a healthy body condition.

Coat and whiskers

The coat may range from loose curls to thin, suede-like fur. Sparse or “sueded” patches can occur, and the appearance may change during growth or moulting. TICA notes that Devon whiskers can be short, stubby or missing. The coat is not uniformly dense like the fur of many other shorthaired breeds.

How to identify one in pictures

When looking at a photo, check for the combination rather than a single feature:

Lighting, grooming, age and a seasonal coat change can make the same cat look more or less curly in different pictures.

What is a Devon Rex’s personality like?

CFA describes the breed as intensely loyal and loving, while TICA characterizes it as highly active, exploratory and strongly oriented toward people. A Devon may follow family members from room to room, investigate household activity, climb, play and seek physical or verbal attention. Intelligence and curiosity can make interactive play and problem-solving activities especially valuable.

These are tendencies, not guarantees. Early socialization, previous experiences, age, health and the way introductions are handled all affect behavior. A kitten raised in a busy home may respond differently from an adult that has lived quietly with one person.

Time alone and boredom

Both CFA and TICA caution that Devons do poorly with long, regular periods of isolation. TICA notes that boredom can contribute to destructive behavior. If everyone in a household is away for most of the day, plan for meaningful interaction before and after work, safe climbing options and rotating toys. Some homes may also consider whether another compatible pet could provide company, but a second animal is not an automatic solution and introductions still need to be gradual.

Children and other pets

Breed profiles describe Devons as potentially compatible with children and other household pets. The individual animals still need to be matched carefully: children should be taught to handle a cat gently, and resident pets should be introduced through controlled, low-pressure steps. Never assume that a breed label guarantees tolerance of rough play or immediate friendship.

Are Devon Rex cats hypoallergenic?

No. Devon Rex cats shed and produce the allergen proteins found in cats. CFA states plainly that they are not hypoallergenic, and TICA says that their short or sparse-looking fur does not eliminate allergen production. Some allergic people tolerate one Devon better than another, while others react strongly.

“Contrary to popular belief, though, they are not hypoallergenic.” — The Cat Fanciers’ Association

Allergy response is personal and cannot be predicted reliably from coat appearance. Before committing to a kitten or adult, spend substantial time with the specific cat in an ordinary indoor setting if possible. A brief meeting is not a medical test, and anyone with significant allergy or asthma concerns should discuss the decision with a qualified health professional.

How do you groom a Devon Rex?

Devon Rex grooming is usually light, but the coat can be fragile. The Canadian Cat Association recommends a light comb-through once a week and notes that firm stroking may sometimes be enough. CFA also warns that coat texture and density vary. The aim is to remove loose material without pulling delicate hairs or irritating the skin.

  1. Choose a gentle tool. A soft, short-haired-cat grooming comb can serve as a basic aid; it is not a breed-specific requirement.
  2. Work briefly and calmly. Let the cat sniff the comb, then make light passes in the direction of coat growth. Stop if the cat becomes distressed.
  3. Check sparse areas. Look at the ears, neck, armpits and belly for redness, scaling, mats or sore skin. Thin fur can make irritation easier to see.
  4. Use a weekly routine as a starting point. A light weekly comb-through follows the Canadian Cat Association’s guidance. Some cats will need less; a cat with tangling, skin changes or unusual shedding may need professional or veterinary advice.
  5. Avoid force. Do not yank through knots or use aggressive brushing. The consulted breed profiles do not prescribe routine frequent bathing, so do not make repeated baths a default care rule.

Keep claws, ears, teeth and body condition on a normal preventive-care schedule recommended by your veterinary practice. Grooming observations are useful information, but they do not diagnose skin disease.

What health problems can Devon Rex cats have?

The available breed profile from Zoetis Petcare lists broad concern categories for Devon Rex cats: endocrine and metabolic disorders, neurological abnormalities, skin and coat conditions, heart disease, and bone and joint problems. The profile does not name specific disorders, quantify risk or provide a breed-specific screening timetable. Those limits matter: a broad category is not a diagnosis or a prediction that an individual cat will develop a condition.

Zoetis gives a general lifespan baseline of 13–17 years. The figure is an estimate for the breed, not a promise for any cat, and the source does not state a publication year. Nutrition, preventive care, genetics, environment and chance all influence longevity.

The blood-type issue breeders should address

CFA highlights a breeding concern involving blood type B, which it says occurs at high incidence in the Devon Rex gene pool. Incompatible parental blood types can result in kitten deaths unless affected kittens are initially hand-raised. CFA recommends genetic testing for breeders. This is primarily a breeding-management issue, but it gives prospective owners a concrete reason to request health and testing records rather than relying on verbal assurances.

What health records to request

  • Veterinary records for the kitten or adult, including dates and treatments.
  • Documentation of genetic testing performed on the parents, including how the breeder manages blood-type risk.
  • Any information the breeder has about health conditions in the parents and close relatives.
  • The written terms covering veterinary examination, return of the cat and support if a problem is discovered.

These questions do not replace an examination by your own veterinarian. They help you understand what is documented before you make a decision.

Devon Rex vs. Cornish Rex: what is different?

The breeds share a “Rex” label and curly-looking coats, but they are not the same breed or the same mutation. The following distinctions come from CFA and TICA breed descriptions.

Feature Devon Rex Cornish Rex
History Kirlee appeared in Devon, England, in 1959; test breeding established a mutation distinct from the Cornish Rex. A separate Rex breed with a different coat mutation.
Coat structure Short, soft coat with sparse, short rexed guard hairs; texture can range from loose curls to suede-like fur. CFA describes the Cornish Rex as lacking outer guard hairs.
Head and ears Modified wedge-shaped head, prominent cheekbones, short muzzle and very large low-set ears. Head and ear proportions follow the Cornish Rex standard rather than the Devon’s distinctive low-set ear and cheekbone combination.
Whiskers May be short, stubby or missing. Whisker characteristics differ under its own breed standard.

Neither breed should be marketed as hypoallergenic. Coat feel, shedding and an individual person’s allergy response are not reasons to rank one as universally better.

Would a Devon Rex fit your household?

Use the following checks before contacting breeders or adoption groups:

  • Interaction: Can you provide regular attention and play every day rather than leaving the cat alone for long, routine stretches?
  • Environment: Can you offer secure vertical space, scratching surfaces, resting areas and safe ways to investigate the home?
  • Allergies: Has every household member who may react spent time with the specific cat, not merely with photographs or a different breed?
  • Handling: Can children and visitors follow rules for gentle contact and allow the cat to retreat?
  • Other animals: Do you have a plan for slow introductions and separate resources?
  • Long-term care: Are you prepared for a commitment that may last roughly 13–17 years, while recognizing that individual lifespans vary?

A Devon may be a poor match for a home seeking a completely independent cat or one that can routinely be ignored during long absences. A home that enjoys an involved, interactive companion may find the breed’s people orientation rewarding.

How to find a Devon Rex and evaluate a breeder

CFA recommends visiting a cat show to meet breeders and notes that locating a kitten from a reputable breeder may take time. Its Devon Rex profile also provides breeder-finding guidance. Retired adults may sometimes be available, so an adult can be worth considering if its temperament and history suit your household.

Questions to ask before reserving a kitten

  1. What health and genetic testing has been completed on both parents?
  2. Can you share the test results and the kitten’s veterinary records?
  3. What is known about the parents’ blood types, and how are breeding risks managed?
  4. How has the kitten been socialized with people, household sounds and other animals?
  5. What feeding, vaccination, parasite-control and transition instructions will accompany the kitten?
  6. What support and return policy apply if a health or temperament problem emerges?

Ask to see records rather than accepting a general statement that the line is “healthy.” A responsible breeder should be willing to explain what is known, what has not been tested and what follow-up care the cat needs.

Preparing for the first days at home

Set up one quiet room with food, water, a litter box, bedding, hiding space, scratching surface and sturdy play or climbing options before the cat arrives. Allow the cat to explore at its own pace, then expand access as it becomes comfortable. Keep windows, balconies, cords and small swallowable objects secure. Introduce children and resident pets one at a time and preserve a retreat the cat can always reach.

Because Devons are curious and people-oriented, observe what kind of interaction your individual cat seeks. Some may prefer lap time; others may want chase games, climbing or frequent investigation. Adjust enrichment to the cat’s response instead of assuming that every Devon has the same activity level.

Key takeaways about Devon Rex cats

  • The Devon Rex is recognized by its large low-set ears, prominent cheekbones, short muzzle, medium muscular body and variable wavy or curly coat.
  • It is a separate breed from the Cornish Rex, with a different coat mutation and different coat structure.
  • Breed organizations describe an affectionate, intelligent and active cat that generally needs substantial human interaction.
  • Weekly light combing is a reasonable starting routine, but fragile and variable coats require gentle, individual care.
  • Devons are not hypoallergenic; meet the specific cat before making an allergy-sensitive decision.
  • Ask breeders for veterinary and genetic records, including how they manage the blood-type concern identified by CFA.
