The coat is the quickest reliable clue: a Devon Rex has soft, visibly wavy fur, while a Sphynx looks hairless but normally has at least some fine down or short hair. That difference affects grooming, skin care and what you should ask a breeder or veterinarian. Both breeds are generally described as active and people-oriented, so appearance alone cannot predict which individual cat will suit your household.

This guide explains the visual differences, daily-care implications, allergy limits, health-screening questions and home fit of each breed. For photographs and official standards, compare the CFA Devon Rex page, the CFA Sphynx page and TICA’s Sphynx overview.

Devon Rex vs Sphynx at a glance

These are distinct breeds, not two coat versions of the same cat. The Devon Rex is a furred cat with a characteristic curl. The Sphynx is bred for an appearance of hairlessness, although its skin is usually covered by a very fine layer of down and some areas can have short hair. A close look at the muzzle, ears and skin can therefore separate the breeds more reliably than color or body size.

Feature Devon Rex Sphynx
Coat Soft, wavy fur; the unusual texture is a defining breed feature. Hairless-looking skin with possible fine down or short hair, including evidence of hair on the nose bridge and ears.
Face and ears Large eyes, a short muzzle, prominent cheekbones and large, low-set ears are described by CFA. Large ears and a wrinkled, warm-feeling skin appearance are described by CFA and TICA.
General activity CFA describes the breed as alert and active. CFA and TICA describe the breed as lively, curious, friendly and people-oriented.
Distinctive grooming issue The available breed description establishes the coat but does not set a universal grooming schedule. CFA says oily skin requires regular bathing; it does not prescribe one interval for every cat.
Health topics to discuss Ask the breeder and veterinarian which examinations are appropriate for the individual cat; a comparative disease rate is not established here. CFA lists hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hereditary myopathy, respiratory issues in kittens, sensitive digestion, some skin conditions and periodontal disease as concerns to discuss.

Neither description makes one breed universally easier, healthier or more affectionate. The useful comparison is whether you prefer maintaining a fine, curly coat or managing exposed, potentially oily skin, and whether the cat’s energy and social needs fit your routine.

How to identify each breed in a picture

Start with the coat, not the color

In a Devon Rex photograph, look for a continuous layer of short, soft fur with a wave or loose curl. CFA describes the coat as a distinctive texture produced by a mutation cultivated in no other breed. The curls may look subtle in a still photograph, especially on a young cat or in poor lighting, but the coat should not read as smooth, bare skin.

A Sphynx photograph usually shows skin rather than a conventional fur coat. “Hairless” is an appearance, not a literal absence of every hair: CFA’s standard calls for some evidence of hair on the bridge of the nose and the ears, and TICA likewise says the breed appears hairless without being truly hairless. Fine peach-fuzz-like down can be difficult to see on screen, so do not reject a Sphynx because a close-up reveals a little fuzz.

Check the head and ears for supporting clues

Large ears occur in both breeds, so ears alone cannot identify one. A Devon Rex is described with large, low-set ears, large eyes, a short muzzle and prominent cheekbones. A Sphynx also has large ears, while the skin’s wrinkles and the warm, suede-like impression are more characteristic visual cues. These are breed descriptions, not a measuring test; mixed-breed cats can share individual features.

Use skin texture as a clue, not a diagnosis

Sphynx skin can look wrinkled, particularly around the head and body. Because the breed has little insulating fur, owners often notice that the skin feels warm. A red, crusted, painful or persistently greasy surface is not a normal identification feature; it warrants veterinary advice rather than a guess about breed.

Where to see authoritative photos

The CFA breed pages provide the written standards alongside breed images: Devon Rex and Sphynx. TICA’s standard document, revised May 1, 2025, also illustrates the Sphynx type and wording: All Breed Standards PDF. Use these references to learn the overall look, then remember that lighting, age, grooming and crossbreeding can make an individual cat look different.

Coat genetics: why the textures are so different

The Devon Rex’s curl and the Sphynx’s nearly hairless coat arise from different inherited coat traits. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory explains the relationship between the traits in its overview of Sphynx and Devon Rex coats. Genetics can explain why a litter has a particular texture, but a visual guess cannot prove pedigree or tell you whether a cat carries a trait.

If registration, breeding rights or a definitive identification matters, ask for pedigree documentation from a reputable registry or breeder. If your concern is a skin or coat problem, a veterinarian can examine the cat; coat appearance is not a substitute for a medical or genetic evaluation.

Grooming and skin care: the practical difference

Devon Rex routine

A Devon Rex does have a coat to monitor. The soft waves can make the fur look plush even though it is short, and the texture is the feature that sets the breed apart. The CFA description confirms the coat type but does not establish one bathing or brushing interval that suits every Devon Rex. Let the cat’s actual coat, shedding, matting and skin condition determine the routine, and ask a groomer or veterinarian if you see tangles, dandruff or irritation.

Handle the coat gently. Over-brushing a fine, curly coat can be uncomfortable and can disrupt the shape that owners value, while ignoring a developing tangle can pull the skin. Introduce any comb, brush or bath gradually and stop if the cat shows pain or distress.

Sphynx routine

With less fur to absorb skin oils, a Sphynx can feel greasy and leave residue on bedding or furniture. CFA specifically states that oily skin requires regular bathing. The source does not give a universal number of days or a single product, so follow the schedule recommended for your cat rather than copying an interval from another household.

Use a cat-appropriate cleanser selected with veterinary guidance, especially if the cat has redness, recurrent debris, allergies or a diagnosed skin condition. A product marketed simply as “cat shampoo for Sphynx” is not automatically right for every skin type. Rinse thoroughly, dry the cat comfortably and watch for irritation after each bath.

Bathing is only one part of care. Check skin folds, ears, nails and the areas that contact litter or bedding. A sudden change in odor, oiliness, crusting or scratching should prompt a veterinary appointment instead of more frequent bathing.

What both breeds need

Both cats benefit from a calm handling routine, clean sleeping areas and regular observation of the skin, ears, eyes, teeth and claws. Keep records of any products used and the cat’s response. That information helps a veterinarian distinguish normal individual variation from a problem that needs treatment.

Temperament and household life

Devon Rex: alert and active

CFA describes the Devon Rex as alert and active. In practice, a prospective owner should plan for daily interaction, climbing or play opportunities and a cat that notices changes in its environment. The description does not promise that every Devon Rex will be outgoing or constantly cuddly; personality still varies with genetics, early socialization, age and experience.

Sphynx: lively, curious and people-oriented

CFA and TICA describe the Sphynx as lively, curious, friendly and people-oriented. Many households choose the breed because they want a cat that participates in family activity. That social tendency can also mean the cat is a poor match for a home where it will be left alone for long periods with little stimulation. Meet the individual cat and ask how it behaves when handled, transported and introduced to new people.

Energy and companionship questions to ask yourself

  • Can you provide interactive play and safe vertical space every day?
  • Will someone be available for companionship, particularly if the cat is strongly social?
  • Are household members comfortable with a cat that may seek warmth, attention or involvement?
  • Can you separate a new cat from resident pets during introductions and proceed at the animals’ pace?
  • Will you notice and respond to changes in skin, appetite, stool, breathing or behavior?

These questions apply to both breeds. A breed label narrows expectations; it cannot replace an individual temperament assessment.

Health: screening topics, not predictions

Sphynx concerns listed by CFA

CFA calls the Sphynx generally robust while also listing several issues owners should discuss with breeders and veterinarians: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hereditary myopathy, respiratory problems in kittens, sensitive digestion, certain skin conditions and periodontal disease. A list of possible concerns is not a diagnosis, a prevalence estimate or a claim that every Sphynx will develop them.

Before committing to a kitten, ask what health history is available for the parents, what examinations have been performed and which follow-up your veterinarian recommends. For an adult cat, obtain prior records and arrange a baseline examination. If a breeder makes a health claim, request documentation rather than relying on a verbal assurance.

Devon Rex health questions

The breed information used for this comparison does not establish a specific Devon Rex disease rate or a directly comparable list of risks. That absence should not be interpreted as proof that the breed has no inherited problems. Ask a veterinarian what screening is appropriate for the cat’s age, family history and symptoms, and evaluate the breeder’s transparency about veterinary records.

Warning signs that need a veterinarian

  • Breathing difficulty, repeated respiratory signs or unusual fatigue.
  • Collapse, fainting or marked exercise intolerance.
  • Persistent vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite or weight change.
  • Red, painful, crusted or intensely itchy skin.
  • Bad breath, drooling, difficulty chewing or other mouth pain.

Those signs require professional assessment regardless of whether the cat is a Devon Rex, Sphynx or mixed breed.

Allergies: hairlessness is not allergy-proof

A Sphynx can appear easier for some people to live with because there is less loose fur, but CFA explicitly warns that the breed should not be assumed to be low-allergen simply because it looks hairless. Allergic reactions can involve proteins in skin flakes, saliva and other secretions, not just visible hair. Individual responses differ, and neither a Sphynx nor a Devon Rex can be labeled reliably hypoallergenic from appearance alone.

If someone in the household has allergies, spend time with the specific cat before adoption and discuss the plan with an allergy professional. A short visit cannot guarantee long-term tolerance, so consider the consequences before making a commitment. Do not bring a cat home on the assumption that a hairless-looking coat eliminates the need for allergy management.

Size and lifespan information

TICA lists the Sphynx at 6–12 pounds and gives a life-expectancy range of 7–15 years on its breed overview. These are reference ranges, not guarantees for an individual cat; sex, nutrition, medical care and genetics all influence the outcome. The comparable Devon Rex numerical range was not established in the breed material used here, so the Sphynx figures should not be treated as a size or longevity comparison.

Which breed fits your home?

Your priority What the descriptions suggest Questions before choosing
You want a visible, textured coat Devon Rex: soft, wavy fur is the defining visual feature. Can you maintain a fine coat gently and monitor for tangles or skin changes?
You prefer the hairless look Sphynx: appears hairless but may have fine down or short hair. Are you prepared for regular bathing and close skin observation?
You want an interactive companion Both are described as active or lively; Sphynx descriptions particularly emphasize friendliness and people orientation. Can your schedule support daily interaction and gradual introductions to other pets?
You are choosing for allergy reasons Neither coat establishes allergy safety. Has every allergy-sensitive household member met the individual cat, and is there a management plan?
You are focused on health risk Sphynx sources list several screening topics; no comparative Devon Rex rate is established here. What records, examinations and veterinary follow-up can the breeder provide?

Choose a Devon Rex when the curly coat and its maintenance fit your preferences. Choose a Sphynx when you genuinely want the hairless appearance and can commit to skin care, not because you expect zero grooming or guaranteed allergy tolerance. In either case, prioritize a healthy, well-socialized individual from a transparent source over a superficial resemblance to a photograph.

Common identification mistakes

“Hairless” means no hair at all

It does not. Fine down and short hairs are compatible with the Sphynx standard. Conversely, a Devon Rex can have a wave that is difficult to see in a low-resolution image.

Large ears identify a Sphynx

Both breeds can have large ears. Use the coat and the overall head shape together rather than one feature.

A breed name guarantees temperament

Breed descriptions summarize tendencies. They do not guarantee that every Devon Rex will be highly active or every Sphynx will be cuddly. Observe the cat and ask about its behavior in ordinary situations.

A health list predicts an individual future

Listed concerns are prompts for responsible screening and veterinary discussion. They are not incidence figures and cannot tell you what will happen to one cat.

A simple pre-adoption checklist

  1. Look at multiple photographs and compare the coat, not just color or ear size.
  2. Meet the cat in person when possible and observe movement, breathing, handling tolerance and social behavior.
  3. Ask for pedigree and veterinary records, including the parents’ known health history.
  4. For a Sphynx, ask how the current owner manages bathing and what skin changes have occurred.
  5. For a Devon Rex, ask how the coat is maintained and whether the cat has had matting or skin problems.
  6. Arrange a veterinary examination soon after adoption and bring all available records.
  7. Plan an introduction period, enrichment, sleeping areas and a budget for routine and unexpected care.

Following these steps gives you better information than trying to identify a breed from one photograph or choosing solely on the basis of a hairless appearance.
