Diamond goby care succeeds when the aquarium is designed around two facts: Valenciennea puellaris is a sand-sifting, burrowing fish, and sifting is a way to forage—not proof that a home sand bed supplies a complete diet. Give it a broad area of fine, movable sand, stable rockwork, a fitted cover, and supplemental food that you can see it eat.
Published care sheets disagree on minimum tank volume and sand depth. Rather than treating one number as universal, use their ranges as planning references and prioritize usable bottom area, mature-system stability, secure construction, and reliable feeding.

What a diamond goby is—and what sand sifting actually does
The name diamond goby refers to the marine goby Valenciennea puellaris. It takes mouthfuls of sediment from the bottom, separates small edible organisms, and expels the remaining particles through its gills or back onto the substrate. The behavior is a feeding strategy that also shapes the fish’s habitat: the goby needs sand it can move and enough open bottom to make repeated foraging passes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat distinction matters because “sand sifter” is often shortened to “reef cleaner.” A diamond goby may redistribute loose particles and consume prey living between grains, but that does not make it a substitute for routine aquarium maintenance. Sifting can stir detritus, shift a frag, or deposit sand on a low coral. Build the tank for the fish’s natural behavior rather than buying one to perform a cleaning service.

What the fish is looking for in the sand
The target is small benthic prey, including organisms living among the grains. A functioning bed can provide opportunities to forage, especially in an established marine system, but the quantity and renewal of prey in a captive aquarium are unpredictable. A visually mature or “live” sand bed is not a measured ration, and a fish can continue sifting while receiving too little nutrition.
What a 2022 study can—and cannot—tell you
A peer-reviewed study by Brodnicke and colleagues in Functional Ecology (2022) measured the effect of sifting on meiobenthic prey in two related species, not in V. puellaris. After four days, prey abundance fell by 30.7% ± 9.2 standard error for Valenciennea sexguttata and by 46.1% ± 5.1 standard error for V. strigata. Those results demonstrate that winnowing can consume prey from sediment; they are not diamond-goby feeding rates, starvation thresholds, or a prediction of how long a particular aquarium will support one fish.
Species care guides therefore pair a suitable sand bed with supplemental feeding and observation. If the goby is not taking offered food, do not assume that continued sifting means it is adequately nourished.

How large should the aquarium be?
There is no single, universally established minimum for Valenciennea puellaris in the sources used for this guide. Aquarium Source recommends at least 30 US gallons, while Aquariadise recommends 55 gallons. Those are publisher recommendations, not the result of a controlled comparison that establishes a scientific cutoff. OATA’s general goby sheet recommends at least 120 litres for larger gobies, but it does not specify diamond gobies.

| Source | Published volume guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Aquarium Source | At least 30 US gallons | Species-focused care recommendation; not a universal scientific minimum. |
| Aquariadise | 55 US gallons | More conservative species-focused recommendation; still a guide-publisher figure. |
| OATA | At least 120 litres for larger gobies generally | Broad goby guidance, not a diamond-goby-specific number. |
For a real setup, volume is only one screening question. A long, open footprint gives the fish more usable sifting area than a tall aquarium with the same nominal capacity. More water also provides greater dilution and stability when feeding a bottom-oriented fish, but extra volume cannot compensate for an inaccessible or shallow substrate. Choose the largest practical tank with a broad sand area, then make that area structurally safe.
A practical decision rule
- Use 30 gallons as the lowest figure cited by a species-focused guide, not as a guarantee that every 30-gallon system is appropriate.
- Treat 55 gallons as the more conservative published species recommendation when you have the option to provide it.
- Consider 120 litres only in the context OATA gives: general guidance for larger gobies, not a species-specific prescription.
- Reject any tank in which rockwork leaves little open bottom or the fish cannot establish a stable burrow.
How deep should the sand bed be?
All of the care guidance supports a siftable, burrow-friendly substrate, but the exact depth varies. Aquarium Source suggests around 3 inches; Aquariadise says at least 4 inches; Gensou gives a range of 7–10 centimetres. OATA’s general goby sheet says some gobies need a thick bed of at least 4 centimetres and potentially deeper, with grains under 3 millimetres. OATA’s figure is broad goby guidance rather than a diamond-goby-specific prescription.
| Source | Depth or grain advice | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Aquarium Source | About 3 inches | Species-focused recommendation. |
| Aquariadise | At least 4 inches | Species-focused recommendation. |
| Gensou | 7–10 centimetres | Species-focused recommendation. |
| OATA | At least 4 centimetres for some gobies; grains under 3 millimetres | General goby guidance, not a fixed V. puellaris requirement. |
The shared principle is more useful than pretending the disagreement does not exist: provide enough fine, movable material for the fish to take mouthfuls and form a retreat, and make the entire bed usable. Grain that is too coarse can be difficult to process; a bed that is deep only in a narrow decorative strip does not provide the same opportunity as a broad, continuous area.

Choosing and placing the substrate
- Select fine sand that the goby can lift and pass through its mouth. OATA’s general guidance uses grains under 3 millimetres as a reference.
- Spread the sand across the intended foraging footprint rather than piling it only at the front glass.
- Leave open lanes between rock structures so the fish can move and sift without repeatedly striking hard surfaces.
- Expect some redistribution. A level bed on day one may become a mound, depression, or burrow entrance as the fish works it.
Build the aquascape so digging cannot cause a collapse
Diamond gobies excavate and maintain burrows. Loose sand beneath a precariously balanced structure can be displaced, allowing rock to shift. The safety principle shared by the guidance is to make structural rock stable independently of the sand.

- Plan the footprint first. Mark the open sand area and the locations where rock will meet the tank bottom. Preserve a continuous patch large enough for repeated sifting.
- Place structural rock on the bottom glass. OATA advises setting rock against the bottom rather than resting it on loose substrate that can be removed from underneath.
- Fix unstable pieces. Gensou recommends securing rock to the bottom with reef-safe putty. Use a method appropriate to the aquarium’s materials and allow any product to cure as directed before adding livestock.
- Add sand around the secured structure. Filling after the foundation is stable prevents a digging fish from excavating a load-bearing void.
- Inspect after introduction. Look for leaning rock, newly exposed bases, or sand piled against a coral. Correct instability before it becomes a collapse.
Do not count a rock that merely appears heavy as secure. A fish can remove a surprising amount of sand from one side of a base, and a small shift can damage corals or equipment even when the aquarium itself does not break.
Do diamond gobies jump?
Yes. OATA states, “A lid or cover is essential as these fish can jump, especially if startled.” Aquarium Source and Aquariadise also warn about jumping. Use a fitted cover that closes gaps around equipment and remains in place during feeding and maintenance. A cover is a practical escape-prevention measure, not an optional decoration.
What does a diamond goby eat?
The fish obtains some prey by sifting, but a home aquarium cannot be assumed to contain enough edible organisms to meet its needs. Offer supplemental foods and verify that the goby actually consumes them. Care guides mention mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and sinking prepared foods as examples. None should be described as a complete diet by itself.
A feeding routine that lets you check intake
- Observe the fish before feeding. Note whether it is active, maintaining a burrow, and responding to food. Continuous sifting alone is not proof of adequate intake.
- Choose a food the fish can reach. Frozen mysis or brine shrimp, copepods, and sinking prepared foods are examples cited by care guides. Thaw or prepare food according to its packaging and aquarium practice.
- Deliver food near the bottom. A turkey baster or feeding pipette can place food close to the goby instead of allowing it to disperse through the water column.
- Watch the response. Confirm that the diamond goby takes the food, rather than assuming another fish consumed it first. Remove uneaten material if it begins to accumulate.
- Adjust placement and competition. If faster tank mates intercept food, use the pipette to feed the goby at a separate spot or at a time when it can reach the bottom.
Some care guides suggest feeding two or three times daily. Treat that schedule as a recommendation from those guides, not as a universal dose or a feeding-trial result. The appropriate amount depends on what the fish consumes, what other livestock eats, and whether uneaten food is degrading water quality. Keep a simple record for the first weeks: food offered, whether the goby swallowed it, and whether leftovers remain.

Signs that require a feeding review
- The fish repeatedly ignores supplemental food while continuing to sift.
- Food is eaten by other fish before the goby reaches it.
- The goby becomes noticeably thin, weak, or less responsive.
- Uneaten food settles in the sand, suggesting that the quantity or delivery method is excessive.
These observations call for a change in delivery, timing, or quantity and, if the fish appears ill, appropriate veterinary or aquatic-animal advice. Do not use a dramatic, fixed timeline for inevitable starvation: the evidence available here does not establish a species-wide schedule for that outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are diamond gobies reef compatible?
Care guides generally describe diamond gobies as reef-compatible because they do not intentionally eat corals. “Reef compatible” does not mean “motionless around corals.” Sifting can move sand onto coral tissue, bury a small frag, or undermine a substrate-level placement.
Protecting coral and frag placements
- Secure vulnerable frags so a passing sand cloud cannot roll them.
- Elevate corals that are sensitive to repeated sand deposition.
- Leave a buffer between the main sifting lanes and low corals.
- Check coral bases after the fish establishes a burrow and clear unwanted sand without collapsing the burrow or rockwork.
Plan for normal substrate movement when choosing coral locations. The fish’s behavior is not a defect to be trained away; it is the reason the sand area must be designed before livestock is added.

- Select the aquarium. Compare the published 30-gallon and 55-gallon species recommendations, then evaluate footprint, open bottom area, and the stability of the marine system you can maintain. The 120-litre OATA figure applies to larger gobies generally, not specifically to this species.
- Sketch the open sand zone. Reserve broad, unobstructed substrate for foraging and a burrow. Avoid designing every inch as a rock island.
- Install the rock foundation. Set structural rock on the bottom glass and secure unstable pieces with reef-safe putty, following the product’s curing directions.
- Add fine sand. Use movable grains; the cited guidance ranges from about 3 inches to 4 inches or 7–10 centimetres, while OATA gives a broader 4-centimetre-plus reference for some gobies. Choose a depth you can support across the usable footprint rather than chasing a single “correct” number.
- Position corals with movement in mind. Keep low or fragile pieces away from the most active sifting lanes and secure frags.
- Fit the cover. Close openings around cords, pipes, and feeding access so a startled fish cannot launch through a gap.
- Prepare supplemental food. Keep suitable sinking foods or frozen options available before the goby arrives, along with a pipette or turkey baster for bottom delivery.
- Monitor feeding and structure. During the early period, verify food intake and inspect for shifting rock, excessive sand on corals, or uneaten food collecting in the bed.
What most simplified care guides get wrong
They treat sifting as a complete diet
Sifting describes how the goby processes sediment. It does not certify that the sand contains enough prey, that prey is replenished, or that the fish has swallowed enough calories. Supplemental foods and direct observation are central parts of responsible care.
They turn another species’ measurements into diamond-goby facts
The Functional Ecology study measured V. sexguttata and V. strigata, with the reported 30.7% and 46.1% four-day prey reductions. It did not test V. puellaris. Applying those percentages as a diamond-goby starvation prediction is not supported.
They present one tank size or depth as settled law
The available recommendations span 30 gallons to 55 gallons and roughly 3 inches to 4 inches or 7–10 centimetres, while OATA’s 120-litre and 4-centimetre guidance is general. Explain the source and scope of every number, then design for footprint, stability, and feeding access.

A diamond goby may process sediment while foraging, but it can also stir detritus and move sand onto corals. It does not remove the need for maintenance, and its digging must be included in the aquascape plan.
They omit escape and collapse risks
A fitted cover addresses jumping, and bottom-supported rockwork addresses undermining. Both are simple controls that should be in place before introduction.
Ongoing checks for a healthy arrangement
- Food intake: Can you identify the goby swallowing supplemental food, rather than merely sifting?
- Body condition: Does it maintain a healthy appearance instead of becoming visibly thin?
- Substrate: Is there still broad, movable sand available for foraging and burrowing?
- Rock stability: Has digging exposed a base or caused any piece to lean?
- Coral placement: Are sand deposits burying tissue or loosening frags?
- Escape prevention: Is the cover fitted after every feeding and maintenance session?
- Waste control: Are uneaten foods accumulating in the sand?
These checks keep the focus on the fish’s actual condition and the aquarium’s physical risks, rather than on a single label such as “reef safe” or “sand cleaner.”
Bottom line for diamond goby care
Provide a wide area of fine, movable sand and stable, bottom-supported rockwork, cover the aquarium, and feed the goby directly with supplemental foods while confirming that it eats. Published guides disagree on exact tank volume and substrate depth, so report those figures as recommendations rather than universal rules. The defining mistake to avoid is assuming that a fish can sift its way to a complete diet simply because the sand bed looks established.
