A diamond goby (Valenciennea puellaris) is best kept in a mature marine aquarium with a broad, fine-sand bed, protected rockwork, a tight lid and a feeding plan that supplements natural prey. It is an energetic sand sifter, so it can improve surface cleanliness while also moving sand onto low corals, destabilizing poorly supported rocks and exhausting the food organisms in an immature bed. Tank volume recommendations range from 30 US gallons to 55 gallons or more; the usable sand-bed footprint, maturity, livestock mix and stability of the system matter more than treating any single number as a guarantee.

What is a diamond goby?

The diamond goby, also called the diamond watchman goby, diamond sleeper goby, orange-spotted sleeper goby, orange-dashed goby or maiden goby, is the sand-sifting marine fish Valenciennea puellaris. It lives on the bottom, takes mouthfuls of sand, filters out tiny invertebrates and microfauna, then expels the cleaned grains. Burrowing and repeated sifting are normal behavior, not signs of illness.

Published size figures are approximate. A species profile lists about 6 inches (15 cm), while a newer care guide gives a typical range of 5–7 inches and says 8 inches is uncommon. Plan the aquarium around an adult-sized fish rather than the smaller juvenile seen at purchase.

In the wild, pairs use burrows for shelter. In an aquarium, a goby may excavate beneath rock, build sand piles at a cave entrance and relocate substrate throughout the day. Those behaviors are the central husbandry trade-off: the fish needs enough mature sand to forage, but its work can alter a carefully arranged reef.

What size tank does a diamond goby need?

Care references do not agree on one minimum. Aquarium Source recommends at least 30 US gallons with a footprint of about 30 by 12 inches. A FishLore species profile recommends 55 gallons (208 litres). Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) general goby guidance says larger gobies should have at least 120 litres and that additional room is needed when other fish are present.

Reference Published recommendation How to interpret it
Aquarium Source (2026 guide) At least 30 US gallons; approximately 30 × 12 inches of footprint A lower-bound recommendation that still requires a mature, usable sand area and compatible stocking
FishLore species profile (approximately 2013) 55 gallons (208 litres) minimum A more conservative volume for an adult fish and its digging behavior
OATA, general goby guidance At least 120 litres for larger gobies, with more space when other fish are kept General welfare advice, not a V. puellaris-specific standard

Choose among these benchmarks by checking the aquarium’s usable sand-bed footprint, not just its advertised volume. A tall tank with little open bottom can provide less foraging space than a shallower tank with a broad base. Count the area left after rockwork, equipment and coral structures are installed. A knowledgeable marine retailer can help assess whether an individual aquarium is suitable, especially when the fish will share the bottom with other diggers or territorial species.

  • Consider 30 gallons only when the tank has a genuinely open 30-by-12-inch-class footprint, a mature sand bed, stable water quality, secure rockwork and a lightly stocked community.
  • Favor 55 gallons or larger when you want more sand area, keep several companions, have a deep rock structure or want more margin for feeding and waste management.
  • Use 120 litres or more as a useful conservative guide for a larger goby, while recognizing that OATA’s statement covers gobies generally.

No controlled study establishes one optimal tank volume. The fish’s adult size, available substrate, food production, aquascape stability and existing livestock should determine the final decision.

Build the right substrate and aquascape

Use a mature, fine sand bed

The species-specific guide recommends about 3 inches of soft sand. Aquarium Tank Mates describes 2 inches of fine aragonite as a minimum and cautions against coarse crushed coral. Another aquarium reference favors fine sand and a large live-sand bed. These are husbandry recommendations rather than results from a controlled substrate trial, but they agree on the functional requirement: soft, workable sand that supports burrowing and contains edible organisms.

Maturity matters as much as depth. A new or sterile bed may look full of sand while containing too little natural prey. Continuous sifting does not prove that the goby is getting enough calories; a fish can become thin while appearing busy. Introduce the goby only after the aquarium and sand bed have had time to develop microbial and small-invertebrate life, and be prepared to provide supplemental food from the first day.

Prevent a cave-in

Digging can undermine a rock pile. Place the base rocks on the aquarium bottom before adding sand, or otherwise support them so the fish cannot remove the grains beneath a load-bearing piece. Do not balance heavy rock on loose substrate and assume the goby will leave it alone. Check that every structure remains stable after the fish establishes a burrow.

Cover the aquarium

The species-specific guide warns that diamond gobies may jump. Fit a secure lid around the entire tank, including openings for cords and plumbing. A screen that leaves large gaps is not equivalent to a closed cover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow for sand movement

Sand piles may land on low corals, cover small colonies or expose the base of a rock. The goby does not need to eat coral to disrupt a reef layout. Keep delicate, low-lying colonies away from likely burrow entrances, and leave a clear working area where substrate can be moved without burying a neighboring animal. A tank designed around an undisturbed deep-sand profile may be a poor match for this species.

Water conditions and testing

Two care references give slightly different marine-water ranges:

Parameter Aquarium Source FishLore profile
Temperature 72–78°F 72–79°F
pH 8.1–8.5 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity/hardness 8–12 dKH 8–12 dKH
Specific gravity 1.020–1.025 1.020–1.025

The small differences between references are less important than avoiding abrupt swings and maintaining appropriate marine water quality. Test routinely rather than waiting for behavior to change. OATA’s checklist specifically says: “Always buy… test kits and regularly check the water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.” Record results so a gradual decline is visible before it becomes a crisis.

What do diamond gobies eat?

Natural feeding consists of small invertebrates and microfauna removed from the sand. In an established aquarium, that prey can supplement the diet, but it is not an unlimited resource. A goby may strip a confined bed faster than it can replenish, particularly in a new tank or one with another sand sifter.

Suggested supplemental foods include live krill, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, small defrosted mysis or brine shrimp and other meaty marine foods. Sinking pellets and flakes may be accepted by some individuals. OATA also lists cultured or shop-bought copepods, small frozen meaty foods and sinking pellets as ways to supplement a mature bed.

A practical feeding routine

  1. Observe first. Watch the fish sift, inspect its body profile and note whether it takes offered food. A full-looking belly and stable weight are more useful than the number of sand passes.
  2. Thaw and rinse frozen food as appropriate. Offer small portions of mysis, brine shrimp or another suitable meaty food rather than one large dump that can foul the water.
  3. Deliver food at the burrow. If other fish intercept it, use a feeding pipette, turkey baster or feeding stick to place food near the entrance. Move slowly so the goby is not startled into abandoning the area.
  4. Adjust frequency to consumption. OATA’s general guidance is food consumed within a few minutes, twice daily. Aquarium Source suggests smaller portions two to three times daily. Start conservatively, watch what disappears, and increase or reduce portions without leaving uneaten food to decay.
  5. Reassess the sand bed. Continued sifting with weight loss means natural prey is insufficient; increase targeted feeding and seek advice from a knowledgeable marine retailer if the condition does not improve.

Feed every fish in the aquarium, but protect the goby’s share. Fast midwater feeders can take frozen food before it reaches the bottom. A feeding station or a second delivery point can reduce competition without forcing the goby into open water.

What tank mates can live with a diamond watchman goby?

Diamond gobies are generally described as peaceful with suitable marine companions. Compatibility is conditional, not guaranteed: adult size, temperament, territory, feeding speed and the amount of bottom space all matter. Avoid combining the goby with an aggressive bottom-dweller that can claim its burrow or prevent it from eating.

Potential companion type Examples mentioned in care references Conditions to check
Peaceful community fish Clownfish, foxface rabbitfish, cleaner wrasse They must not harass the goby or consume every offered portion before it reaches the sand.
Other reef fish Dwarf angelfish, damsels Individual temperament varies; territorial fish need adequate swimming and refuge space.
Invertebrate partners Pistol shrimp and other compatible invertebrates Confirm that the species’ size and behavior are compatible and that neither animal is likely to be injured during burrowing.
Predatory or aggressive bottom fish Not recommended as a general category Avoid any fish large enough to eat the goby or aggressive enough to monopolize the substrate.

Most fish and invertebrates can be suitable in principle, but a particular combination can still fail. Add new animals gradually, provide more than one refuge and watch for repeated chasing, blocked burrow access, torn fins or missed meals. A peaceful reputation does not remove the need to evaluate the existing community.

Are diamond gobies reef safe?

They are commonly called reef compatible because they do not deliberately pick at coral. That label should be read as “not a coral-eating specialist,” not “harmless to every reef arrangement.” Sand expelled from the gills can settle on low corals, and excavation can expose or bury the base of a colony. Keep vulnerable corals elevated or away from the main digging zone and accept that the substrate will not remain precisely sculpted.

Quarantine, disease risks and prevention

The species-specific guide identifies ich as a possible concern and lists visible white spots, lethargy and reduced interest in food as signs to notice. The older species profile also advises quarantining new acquisitions. Quarantine is a prevention step, not a guarantee that every illness will be detected.

  1. Prepare a separate quarantine aquarium with biological filtration, hiding places, a lid and water matching the display system.
  2. Acclimate the new fish carefully, then observe appetite, breathing, skin, fins and feces away from the display community.
  3. Keep equipment dedicated to quarantine where possible, and do not share nets or water between systems without proper cleaning.
  4. If white spots, marked lethargy, rapid breathing or refusal to eat appears, contact an aquatic veterinarian or qualified marine fish-health professional promptly. Follow a diagnosis-based plan rather than adding medication at random.
  5. Do not return a suspect fish to the display aquarium while the cause remains unresolved; seek advice on isolation and the appropriate next step.

The available care references support quarantine, observation and water-quality checks, but they do not establish a clinical diagnosis method or medication protocol for diamond gobies. Water quality should be checked whenever health changes are noticed, and OATA advises consulting a retailer when livestock health is concerning.

Common problems and practical fixes

The goby sifts constantly but is getting thin

Assume the sand bed is not supplying enough prey until proven otherwise. Begin targeted feeding with small meaty portions, deliver food near the burrow and monitor body condition. In a new or sterile aquarium, natural production may be too low to support the fish.

Other fish steal every meal

Feed at more than one location, use a pipette or baster to place food under cover, and offer the goby its portion when faster fish are occupied. Confirm that the fish actually swallows food rather than merely investigating it.

Sand is covering a coral

Move the coral or adjust the aquascape so the burrow’s discharge path does not point at it. Do not repeatedly dismantle a stable burrow without a reason; provide a more suitable open area for excavation instead.

Rockwork shifts after introduction

Remove livestock from immediate danger if necessary, then rebuild the structure on the aquarium bottom or another secure support before replacing the sand. Never rely on the goby to stop digging beneath an unstable rock.

The fish jumps

Check the lid and every cable or plumbing opening for gaps. Replace loose covers and close access points before adding another fish.

Diamond goby purchase and setup checklist

  • Confirm the fish’s identity as Valenciennea puellaris and ask the retailer about its recent feeding history.
  • Choose a tank with a broad, mature fine-sand area and enough room for the adult fish and its companions.
  • Secure base rocks before adding or rearranging sand.
  • Install a tight, fully covering lid.
  • Have a feeding pipette, turkey baster or feeding stick ready before the fish arrives.
  • Keep frozen meaty foods and an appropriate source of copepods available for supplementation.
  • Set up quarantine equipment and test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
  • Plan where low corals can remain clear of sand piles.
  • Ask a knowledgeable marine retailer to review the individual aquarium, especially if the system is near the lower volume recommendations.

Bottom line

A diamond goby can be an engaging, useful sand sifter when its basic conflict is respected: it needs a mature food-bearing substrate, yet its natural digging constantly changes that substrate. Choose the tank by footprint and stability rather than volume alone, build rockwork that cannot be undermined, cover every opening, supplement food before weight falls and quarantine every new fish. Peaceful tankmates and reef compatibility are possibilities, not promises; the existing community and the layout of the sand bed decide whether this active burrower will thrive.
