Diamond tetra care is straightforward when the fish have warm, stable water, a planted aquarium with open swimming room, and a proper shoal. Keep at least five, with six to eight a better practical target, at 24–28°C. Adults reach about 6 cm (2.4 inches) standard length, so choose peaceful, similarly sized community fish rather than predators or persistent fin-nippers.

The species is listed as Makunaima pittieri by FishBase and Seriously Fish; many aquarium references and the IUCN assessment use the older name Moenkhausia pittieri. It is native to the Lake Valencia basin and surrounding waters of Venezuela.

Diamond tetra at a glance

Question Practical answer
Scientific name Makunaima pittieri; older sources may say Moenkhausia pittieri
Origin Lake Valencia basin and surrounding waters, Venezuela
Adult size Up to 6.0 cm (about 2.4 in) standard length, excluding the tail
Temperature 24–28°C (75–82°F), kept steady
Water character Soft to moderately soft, mildly acidic to neutral; published pH ranges overlap around 6–7 but differ slightly by source
Social needs At least five; six to eight or more generally produces calmer behavior
Temperament Usually suitable for a peaceful community aquarium, with a documented tendency to nip fins when kept in an undersized group

FishBase gives a minimum aquarium length of 80 cm for a group. Seriously Fish describes approximately 60 × 38 × 30 cm (about 68 litres or 18 US gallons) for a small group, while a retailer profile gives 20 gallons. Those figures are source-specific guidelines, not a settled universal minimum. Use the larger footprint available when adding fish, increasing the shoal, or choosing active tank mates.

What a diamond tetra is and where it comes from

Diamond tetra is a small characid endemic to Lake Valencia and nearby waters in Venezuela. The name change matters when you search for care information: newer taxonomic listings use Makunaima pittieri, while older books, aquarium listings and the IUCN material may use Moenkhausia pittieri. Searching both names helps you find the same species rather than treating the two names as separate fish.

  • LESS WASTE: Feed two to three times daily, only as much as your fish can consume within three minutes.

Its natural environment helps explain the aquarium advice. This is a shoaling fish from a tropical region, so it is adapted to warm water and group living. Aquarium profiles describe it as adaptable in a well-maintained tank but advise against very bright lighting and bare decoration. A planted layout with shaded cover, wood or other visual breaks, and a clear area for mid-water swimming is a sensible interpretation of that guidance. The layout is a setup recommendation, not a measured requirement for every aquarium.

Diamond tetra care: water and aquarium setup

Temperature and water stability

Keep the aquarium between 24 and 28°C. Avoid abrupt temperature swings; consistency is more useful than repeatedly chasing a particular number. Seriously Fish lists pH 5.5–7.0 and hardness of 5–12 dGH. FishBase lists pH 6–7 and hardness of 5–12 dH. Together, these sources support a soft to moderately soft, mildly acidic to neutral profile.

Do not force a newly acquired group to an exact target pH if doing so makes the water unstable. Match the source water gradually, then maintain a steady condition with regular, appropriate aquarium maintenance. Stability and a fully cycled system matter more than displaying a single “perfect” reading.

Lighting, cover and swimming room

Very bright, uncovered lighting can make the fish more hesitant. Plants, floating cover or shaded areas give the shoal somewhere to retreat while leaving an unobstructed length for cruising. Arrange hardscape so equipment and dense plants do not consume the entire mid-water corridor.

Filter and heater sizing

Seriously Fish gives an example turnover of four to five times the aquarium volume per hour for its 68-litre example. Treat that as an illustration for that setup, not a universal specification. Select filtration for the actual volume, bioload and flow pattern, and avoid a current so forceful that the fish cannot hold position.

  • CLEAR-WATER FORMULA: Won’t cloud water when used as directed.
  • LESS WASTE: Feed two to three times daily, only as much as your fish can consume within three minutes.

The same profile gives a roughly 100–125 W heater for a 68-litre aquarium in a room at 20°C. Heater wattage depends on tank volume, room temperature, lid and ambient conditions, so size the heater for your own system rather than copying that number automatically. A reliable heater is important because the species requires tropical temperatures that do not fluctuate sharply.

Diamond tetra tank size: reconciling the different recommendations

Source guideline Stated setup How to use it
FishBase At least 80 cm aquarium length for a group Prioritizes a continuous swimming length; useful when comparing tanks with different shapes
Seriously Fish About 60 × 38 × 30 cm, approximately 68 litres (18 US gallons), for a small group Provides both footprint and volume for a modest shoal; its filter and heater examples refer to this aquarium
Retailer profile At least 20 gallons A simple volume benchmark, but it does not establish dimensions or stocking density

Because these recommendations differ, there is no single evidence-backed minimum that applies to every stocking plan. Compare length, width and usable swimming area as well as litres or gallons. A longer aquarium is often more useful to a mid-water shoal than a tall tank with the same volume. Increase the aquarium size when you keep more than the basic group, add active schooling fish, or include bottom-dwellers that add waste and reduce floor space.

How many diamond tetras should you keep?

FishBase specifies groups of five or more. Seriously Fish recommends at least six to eight, noting that a proper shoal reduces skittishness and helps contain squabbling. A group that is too small can leave individual fish nervous and may make fin-nipping more noticeable. Start with a group that your aquarium footprint can support rather than buying a single “test” fish.

Observe the shoal after introduction. Healthy social behavior usually means the fish use the open middle water together, separate briefly to investigate cover, and regroup without one fish being constantly chased. If the group spends all its time hiding, check lighting, cover, water stability and whether the aquarium is too exposed before assuming the fish are naturally timid.

Diamond tetra tank mates

Choose companions that are peaceful, similarly sized and compatible with warm, soft-to-moderately-soft water. Compatibility is never guaranteed: individual temperament, aquarium footprint and stocking density can change the outcome.

Companion type Why it can work Checks before combining
Other peaceful tetras Similar size and mid-water community behavior Leave enough open swimming room and avoid overcrowding several active shoals
Rasboras and danionins Generally calm schooling fish with overlapping community requirements Match temperature and ensure the tank is long enough for the most active group
Livebearers Common community companions when water conditions overlap Check hardness and pH needs; some livebearers prefer harder, more alkaline water than diamond tetras
Corydoras and smaller loricariids Peaceful bottom dwellers that use a different swimming level Provide adequate floor area, hiding places and a maintenance plan for the combined bioload
Many gouramis and dwarf cichlids Some individuals are calm enough for a community aquarium Assess the individual fish, territory, adult size and predation risk before purchase

Fish to avoid

  • Persistent fin-nippers, which can target the tetra’s fins even when water parameters are suitable.
  • Aggressive or strongly territorial fish that prevent the shoal from feeding or using open water.
  • Any fish large enough to swallow or seriously injure a 6 cm tetra.

Keeping six to eight or more diamond tetras can reduce fin-nipping, but it does not make an inherently aggressive tank mate safe. Quarantine and observe new fish separately when possible, and be prepared to remove a persistently hostile individual.

Diamond tetra size, appearance and sex differences

FishBase records a maximum of 6.0 cm standard length, and Seriously Fish reports 60 mm standard length. Standard length is measured from the tip of the snout to the base of the tail, so the complete fish appears slightly longer when the tail is included.

Young fish may be silvery and subdued. With maturity, males generally become larger-looking but less stocky than females and develop more reflective scales. Mature males can show extended ventral, dorsal and anal fins with a violet sheen; female fins are described as nearly clear. Color development takes time, and the available profile does not establish a dependable age at which every fish reaches adult coloration.

Do not judge a new purchase solely by juvenile color. Lighting, background, stress and time in the aquarium all affect how much the reflective scales are visible.

Feeding a diamond tetra

In nature, the species eats worms, crustaceans and insects. In an aquarium it readily accepts varied foods. Offer small meals suited to its mouth, combining a quality flake or fine granule with small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp. NAFB also describes it as omnivorous and includes quality flakes, small pellets and live or frozen foods.

  • CLEAR-WATER FORMULA: Won’t cloud water when used as directed.
  • LESS WASTE: Feed two to three times daily, only as much as your fish can consume within three minutes.

Variety is more useful than relying on one product. Feed only what the group can consume without leftovers accumulating, but do not apply a universal quantity or schedule as though every aquarium has the same temperature, fish number and filtration. Watch body condition and competition at feeding time: a timid fish that repeatedly misses food may need smaller portions offered in more than one area.

Breeding diamond tetras

For raising fry in useful numbers, Seriously Fish describes spawning in a separate aquarium. This is profile guidance, not a promise that every pair will spawn on a fixed schedule.

  1. Condition prospective adults with a varied diet, including suitable small live or frozen foods.
  2. Move a displaying male and an egg-filled female to the prepared spawning aquarium.
  3. Check for eggs and remove the adults promptly; they may eat the eggs.
  4. Expect hatching in approximately 24–36 hours if spawning occurs.
  5. Fry become free-swimming after roughly three to four days and need very small first foods.
  6. Begin with food fine enough for newly free-swimming fry; microworms or brine-shrimp nauplii become appropriate as the fry grow and can take them.

Wild reproductive information is less complete. The IUCN assessment material notes that basic details such as minimum reproductive size and reproductive timing are not documented in that assessment, so aquarium timing should not be presented as a complete description of the species’ natural breeding cycle.

Conservation and responsible sourcing

FishBase records an assessment dated 29 November 2022 and identifies the IUCN assessment as the source. The IUCN material available for this species is from 2022 and highlights gaps in basic wild reproductive knowledge. Check the current assessment record for the exact conservation category before quoting it, because category wording should come from the assessment page itself.

For aquarists, the practical response is to buy healthy, correctly identified fish from a responsible source, avoid impulse purchases that lead to undersized groups, and plan the final aquarium before bringing fish home. Conservation status does not replace good husbandry: stable water, an appropriate shoal and compatible tank mates remain the immediate welfare priorities.

Common problems and the first checks to make

The fish hide or remain skittish

Check whether the group is too small, the lighting is excessively bright, or the aquarium lacks cover. Verify that temperature and water chemistry are stable and that larger tank mates are not intimidating them.

Fin-nipping appears

First assess shoal size. Seriously Fish reports that keeping six to eight or more can usually reduce this behavior. Then inspect the community for persistent fin-nippers and confirm that the aquarium is not overcrowded. A larger group will not solve predation or aggression from another species.

Color looks dull

Juveniles are often plain and silvery, and mature coloration develops over time. Review stress, lighting and social conditions before treating subdued color as a disease sign. If the fish also show abnormal swimming, breathing or appetite, investigate water quality and seek species-appropriate veterinary advice.

Bottom line for a successful diamond tetra aquarium

Build the aquarium around the shoal: warm, stable water at 24–28°C, soft to moderately soft conditions, shaded planted cover and a clear swimming lane. Keep at least five, preferably six to eight or more, and select calm companions of comparable size. Use the published tank dimensions as planning benchmarks rather than pretending that 18, 20 or any other single gallon figure is universal. Feed a varied diet of quality dry foods and small live or frozen items, and treat breeding as a separate project with tiny first foods for fry.
