No confirmed account says Robert De Niro adopted Jinx, the cat from Meet the Parents. A cast-reunion report says one of the cats who played Jinx was adopted by Teri Polo’s mother. Director Jay Roach recalled that De Niro asked what would happen to the cat, and said he had thought De Niro might adopt it—but that recollection does not establish an adoption.

Who adopted the cat that played Jinx?

According to a cast-reunion report, Teri Polo’s mother adopted one of the cats used as Jinx after filming. The report attributes to director Jay Roach the recollection that De Niro asked what would happen to the cat. Roach said he thought De Niro might be the one to adopt it, but the account does not say that De Niro did.

That distinction matters: De Niro’s interest in the cat is reported, while the adoption attributed to Polo’s mother is the documented outcome in the reunion account.

Was Jinx played by one cat or two?

Jinx was a single fictional character played by two five-year-old Himalayan cats, Bailey and Misha. The American Humane Society animal-action report identifies both cats as playing Jinx and notes that the character had several scenes with De Niro. It also says the actors became fast friends during filming.

What happened to the cats during filming?

The American Humane Society report describes animal-care measures on set, including two trainers and a veterinarian. Trainers used cues and treats; a safety harness was used for the roof sequence, and a prop cat stood in for the dangling shot. The report also describes a trainer handing a cat to De Niro before a scene, when he held and petted it.

The report lists Meet the Parents’ release date as October 7, 2000. Its animal-action information places the cats’ work within the American Humane Society’s No Animals Were Harmed program.
