Scientists have reported a remarkable collection of 507–502-million-year-old fossils from the Grand Canyon: tiny animals whose soft bodies and unusual feeding structures are rarely preserved. The fossils include rock-scraping molluscs, likely crustaceans and spiky-toothed worms. Their unfamiliar shapes may look alien, but they are evidence of early life on Earth—not extraterrestrial creatures.

What are the alien-looking fossils found in the Grand Canyon?

They are fragments of Cambrian animals preserved in rock from the Grand Canyon region. A 2025 University of Cambridge-led study describes the discovery as the first major find in the Grand Canyon of exceptionally preserved soft-bodied Cambrian animals. Unlike shells or bones, soft tissues and many small anatomical details usually decay before they can become fossils. Their preservation makes this assemblage unusually informative.

The animals lived 507–502 million years ago, during the Cambrian explosion, a period when animal life diversified and many major animal groups appeared in the fossil record. “Alien-like” describes how strange their anatomy can look to us; it does not mean the animals came from space.

What the fragments reveal

  • Rock-scraping molluscs: Tiny molluscs had structures suited to scraping food from surfaces.
  • Likely crustaceans: Some fossils resemble relatives of brine shrimp and show molar-like teeth, hair-like mouth extensions and triangular grooves around the mouth.
  • Spiky-toothed worms: The study includes a distinctive animal named Kraytdraco spectatus, after the fictional krayt dragon, for its striking rows of teeth.
  • Food fragments: Remains of food add clues about what animals ate and how food moved through the ecosystem.

No animal was preserved whole. Researchers identified groups from diagnostic anatomical features in the fragments, so the interpretations are based on the structures that survived rather than complete bodies.

How old are the fossils, and how were they found?

The fossils date to 507–502 million years ago, according to the University of Cambridge’s 2025 account of the study. Researchers found them during a 2023 expedition along the Colorado River, then brought fist-sized rock samples back to Cambridge for analysis.

  1. They dissolved the rock samples in hydrofluoric acid to release fossil material.
  2. They passed the resulting sediment through multiple sieves to separate the tiny remains.
  3. They examined thousands of recovered fossils using high-powered microscopy.

The researchers also considered trace fossils: marks left by animals burrowing, walking and feeding. Those traces, alongside the body fossils, help reconstruct how animals interacted with their surroundings even when no complete animal is preserved.

What made this Cambrian ecosystem a “Goldilocks zone”?

The phrase describes an environment with conditions that, in the researchers’ interpretation, supported abundant resources and more elaborate ways of finding and eating food. The Cambridge-led study contrasts this setting with many previously known soft-bodied Cambrian fossil sites, which were often oxygen-poor and resource-poor.

Some of the Grand Canyon crustacean-like fossils show how complex those feeding adaptations could be. Molar-like teeth could process food, while hair-like structures around the mouth helped sweep particles inward; triangular grooves were part of the same feeding arrangement. Cambridge researcher Giovanni Mussini described such structures as “cutting-edge ‘technologies’ for their time.” The study frames this pattern as evolutionary escalation: as resources became available, animals developed higher-performance ways to capture them.

How does the Grand Canyon find compare with other Cambrian fossil sites?

The Cambridge account places the discovery in contrast with previously known soft-bodied Cambrian sites such as the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang-type deposits, which it characterizes as often oxygen- and resource-poor. The evidence summarized for this discovery does not give a like-for-like set of measurements for every deposit, so the comparison is best understood as a difference in environmental interpretation rather than a complete ranking of fossil sites.

Comparison point Grand Canyon assemblage Previously known soft-bodied Cambrian sites in the Cambridge account
Age 507–502 million years old (Cambridge, 2025) Not stated in the Cambridge account
Preservation Fragments of soft-bodied or non-mineralised animals are preserved; no animals were recovered complete (Cambridge, 2025) Soft-bodied fossils are noted, but a site-by-site preservation comparison is not stated (Cambridge, 2025)
Oxygen and resources Interpreted as a resource-rich setting (Cambridge, 2025) Many such settings are described as oxygen- and resource-poor; site-specific values are not stated (Cambridge, 2025)
Feeding adaptations Fossils show complex structures, including molar-like teeth and hair-like mouth extensions (Cambridge, 2025) A comparable inventory of feeding structures is not stated (Cambridge, 2025)
Ecosystem evidence Body fossils and traces of burrowing, walking and feeding contribute to reconstruction (Cambridge, 2025) A directly comparable account of trace fossils is not stated (Cambridge, 2025)

What does the discovery add to the Grand Canyon’s fossil record?

The new Cambrian animals add a different kind of evidence to a fossil record that spans far more than a billion years. The National Park Service describes fossils from several chapters of the region’s history:

The NPS says Grand Canyon strata represent 32% of Earth’s geologic history, and its fossil overview describes one billion years of fossil life in the park. In 2020, the agency also identified footprints exposed by a cliff collapse as the oldest recorded tracks of their kind in Grand Canyon National Park, dating to 313 million years ago.

Are there dinosaur fossils in the Grand Canyon?

No dinosaur fossils are found in Grand Canyon itself, according to the National Park Service. The rocks exposed there are older than the oldest known dinosaurs, so the Grand Canyon’s fossil record documents earlier life and later non-dinosaur animals rather than dinosaurs.
