That does not mean Tyrannosaurus rex or Triceratops survived: all dinosaurs outside the bird lineage disappeared about 66 million years ago. So, in the scientific sense, we do live alongside dinosaurs, but only avian dinosaurs.
Are birds really dinosaurs?
Yes. In modern evolutionary classification, birds are avian dinosaurs: they belong within the dinosaur family tree, descended from theropod ancestors. The word “non-avian dinosaur” describes dinosaurs outside that bird lineage, including familiar animals such as T. rex, Triceratops, and sauropods.
This is a matter of ancestry, not resemblance. Birds did not simply evolve from a dinosaur group that was separate from dinosaurs; birds are the surviving branch of dinosaurs. The Australian Museum explains the relationship by comparing it with our own: just as humans remain mammals because of our ancestry, birds remain dinosaurs because of theirs.
Fossils help show how bird traits fit into dinosaur evolution. Archaeopteryx, an early bird relative, had feathers and wings as well as teeth, a long bony tail, and claws on its wing digits. It is evidence of a mix of traits, not proof that this individual species was the direct ancestor of every modern bird.

When did the extinction happen—and what disappeared?
Dinosaurs appeared about 245 million years ago, according to the American Museum of Natural History. At the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary, about 66 million years ago, all non-avian dinosaurs went extinct. The boundary marks a mass extinction, not the disappearance of every dinosaur lineage: some birds survived, while many other bird groups also died out.
That distinction resolves the apparent contradiction in the title. “The dinosaurs went extinct” is common shorthand for the end of non-avian dinosaurs. It is not literally true of the whole dinosaur lineage, because birds persisted. The American Museum of Natural History lists roughly 700 known extinct dinosaur species; that is a count of known fossil species, not a complete tally of every dinosaur that ever lived. Current bird totals differ among institutions: the Australian Museum says more than 10,000 living species, while the Natural History Museum gives at least 11,000. Those figures reflect different counts, not a disagreement about whether birds are dinosaurs.

What killed the non-avian dinosaurs?
The leading explanation is a huge asteroid impact at Chicxulub, on the present-day Yucatán Peninsula. The U.S. National Park Service estimates the asteroid was 6–10 miles across and says the resulting crater is more than 90 miles across. The impact hypothesis is supported by several independent traces preserved in rocks at the extinction boundary:
- A vast crater: Chicxulub records the impact itself.
- Shocked quartz: mineral grains altered by the extreme pressures of an impact.
- Iridium-rich clay: an unusual concentration of iridium at the boundary, consistent with material delivered by an asteroid.
- Impact spherules and glass: particles formed from molten material thrown out by the collision and later deposited.
The impact would have blasted debris and aerosols into the atmosphere. Reduced sunlight and cooling could have disrupted plant growth and, in turn, food webs on land and in the oceans. This chain helps explain why an event lasting moments could trigger a worldwide biological crisis.

The asteroid is the leading cause, but the full context is not settled as a single-cause story. Deccan Traps volcanism in what is now India, sea-level change, and longer-term climate shifts may have stressed ecosystems or amplified the crisis. Their precise contributions—and how they interacted with the impact—remain debated.
Why did some birds survive?
Bird survival was selective: a small number of bird lineages crossed the extinction boundary, while many early birds did not. Paleontologists have proposed several traits that may have helped some survivors, but no single one is established as the decisive explanation.

- Small body size: smaller animals may have needed less food during a prolonged shortage.
- Flexible diets: birds able to eat a range of foods may have been less vulnerable when particular food sources disappeared. Access to seeds is one proposed advantage because seeds can persist after plants die back.
- Flight and mobility: flight may have helped some birds move between suitable habitats, though it would not protect them from a collapsed food web.
- Habitat flexibility and shelter: the ability to use different environments or find refuge may have improved the odds for some populations.
- Growth and reproduction: differences in growth rates and life histories may have mattered, but the evidence does not identify one universally successful strategy.
These are possible pieces of a survival advantage, not a proven checklist. The extinction was severe enough that many bird lineages vanished despite being birds; survival depended on which lineages and ecosystems could persist through the upheaval.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are dinosaurs alive today, and how do we know?
Yes—if “dinosaur” means the full evolutionary group, birds are alive today as avian dinosaurs. No non-avian dinosaurs are known to have survived the end-Cretaceous extinction. There is no evidence that T. rex, Triceratops, or another non-avian dinosaur lives in the modern world.

The evidence for ancient dinosaurs comes from fossils and traces preserved in Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, as well as from the geology of the K–Pg boundary and Chicxulub crater. It is not eyewitness evidence. The Australian Museum and Natural History Museum describe living birds as the surviving dinosaurs; the U.S. National Park Service’s paleontology explainer, updated in 2025, states that all dinosaurs except a few groups of birds went extinct.
For a pet owner, the surprising part is that the familiar bird outside the window—and the chicken many people keep or encounter—is not merely a distant dinosaur look-alike. Under the ancestry-based classification used by paleontologists, each is a living dinosaur. The great non-avian dinosaurs are gone; their avian branch is still here.
