Is the Platypus the World’s Most Venomous Mammal? What Its Spur Can Do

A male platypus’s ankle spur can deliver venom that causes extreme pain and lingering sensitivity. Here’s what is known—and why the “world’s most venomous” label is unproven.

The male platypus has a venom-delivering spur on each hind ankle. A strike can cause immediate, extreme pain, swelling that spreads through the affected limb, and heightened pain sensitivity that lasts days, weeks, or sometimes months. The injury is generally described as non-lethal to people, but there is no accepted scientific ranking that establishes the platypus as the world’s most venomous mammal.

Is the platypus venomous?

Yes. Adult male platypuses have a functional venom-delivery system; females do not retain the functional spur sheath. The spur is not a stinger like an insect’s: it is a sharp, hollow, keratinized structure attached to a venom gland by a duct.

The Australian Museum describes a sharp spur about 12 millimetres long on each male ankle. The gland, called the crural gland, produces venom especially around the breeding season. Venom production and the spur are associated chiefly with male competition, although the precise biological role is not fully settled.

What happens when a platypus spur injures someone?

Human cases are uncommon, so clinical evidence is limited. Reports describe immediate, excruciating pain followed by rapidly developing swelling that can spread through the affected limb. Some people experience hyperalgesia—an unusually strong response to painful stimuli—or allodynia, in which normally harmless touch becomes painful. This heightened sensitivity may continue for days, weeks, or months, well beyond the initial puncture wound.

The venom is chemically complex. Studies describe peptides and proteins that affect pain signalling, cell membranes, and blood regulation; nerve-growth-factor-related effects are also discussed. These mechanisms help explain why a small-looking puncture can lead to prolonged, disabling symptoms. The Australian Venom Research Unit notes nausea, swelling, and severe pain that may affect the whole body and last for weeks.

Can a platypus sting kill a person?

Human injuries are generally described as non-lethal, though they can be severely painful and disabling. That should not be mistaken for a guarantee about every incident: cases are rare, and the 2025 Medical Journal of Australia report emphasizes uncertainty about optimal treatment. Seek medical assessment after a platypus injury rather than trying to manage it solely at home.

Why do male platypuses have venom?

The spur and venom are most closely associated with competition between males, particularly around the breeding season, when venom production increases. A review in the Journal of Mammalogy notes that spur wounds can disable competitors; deaths have been recorded in captive circumstances following multiple spurrings. That evidence does not mean the venom is normally used to kill prey or that a single injury routinely kills another animal.

The evolutionary history is unusual. The platypus is the only venomous mammal in the order Monotremata described in the cited studies, and its venom is delivered from hind-leg spurs rather than a bite or saliva. A 2008 genome analysis identified at least 19 venom substances, including defensin-like peptides, C-type natriuretic peptide, and nerve growth factor.

Is the platypus the world’s most venomous mammal?

That phrase is a popular headline, not a settled scientific ranking. A 2025 peer-reviewed study describes the platypus as one of 15 experimentally confirmed venomous mammals; Tasmania’s environment department describes five known venomous mammals. The counts differ with definitions and evidence sets. Neither source supplies a standardized potency score comparing mammal venoms, so the evidence does not establish the platypus as number one.

What can be said with confidence is more specific: the male platypus is a rare venomous mammal, and its spur can cause extraordinarily prolonged pain in people. Comparing species by an unspecified measure of “venom strength” would obscure important differences in delivery method, sex specificity, ecological function, symptoms, lethality evidence, and the quality of human case data.

How to avoid a platypus spur

Do not handle a platypus casually. The Australian Museum advises that when handling is necessary—for example, to help an injured animal—it should be picked up by the end half of the tail to avoid the spur if it is male. This is not a substitute for wildlife-handling training; contact a qualified wildlife rescuer or appropriate local authority when an animal needs help.
