Long-haired dogs range from tiny, silky companions such as the Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier to enormous, double-coated working dogs such as the Newfoundland. The right choice depends less on a beautiful coat than on whether you can manage the grooming, shedding, exercise, noise, size, health considerations, and temperament that come with it.

This guide covers 17 popular long-coated, feathered, shaggy, curly, or heavily double-coated breeds. Use it to narrow your search to two or three realistic candidates, then meet individual dogs and discuss health records, grooming requirements, and behavior with a responsible breeder, rescue organization, groomer, and veterinarian.

Quick comparison: which long-haired dog fits your lifestyle?

The table below is a practical editorial comparison, not an official breed-rating system. Grooming and activity needs vary with the individual dog, coat length, climate, age, health, training, and whether the coat is maintained long or in a shorter pet trim.

Breed Size Coat type Brushing Shedding Activity Often suits Main caution
Afghan Hound Medium-large Long, silky Very high Low to moderate visible shedding High Experienced active owners Independent temperament, chase instinct, secure fencing
Bearded Collie Medium Shaggy double coat High Moderate High Outdoor, training-oriented households Daily coat work and plenty of activity
Bichon Frise Small Curly, plush Moderate-high Low visible shedding Moderate Social families and city homes Matting and recurring clipping
Briard Large Long, slightly wavy or shaggy High Moderate High Experienced working-dog owners Protective, powerful, mentally demanding
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Small Silky, feathered Moderate Moderate Moderate Affectionate companions and active families Serious attention to breed health screening
American Cocker Spaniel Small-medium Lush, feathered High Moderate Moderate-high Playful families and sporting homes Ear, feathering, mat, and weight management
Golden Retriever Large Medium-length double coat Moderate-high Heavy, especially seasonally High Active families and training partners Hair throughout the home and daily activity needs
Havanese Small Long, soft, silky High in full coat Low visible shedding Moderate People-oriented apartment or suburban homes Separation difficulty and matting
Lhasa Apso Small Dense, lavish, flowing High in full coat Low to moderate visible shedding Low-moderate Owners who like an independent companion Opinionated temperament and demanding full coat
Maltese Small Long, straight, silky High in full coat Low visible shedding Low-moderate Small-home living and close companionship Fragility, mats, and daily coat care
Newfoundland Giant Heavy double coat Very high Heavy Moderate, giant-dog specific Owners prepared for a large family dog Space, drool, transportation, food, and veterinary costs
Old English Sheepdog Large Profuse double coat Very high Heavy Moderate Families committed to a shaggy giant Extensive grooming, hair, mud, and size
Pekingese Small Long mane and furnishings Moderate-high Moderate Low Calm homes and respectful older children Short muzzle, heat sensitivity, and dislike of rough play
Pomeranian Small Abundant double coat Moderate-high Moderate, seasonal Low-moderate Apartments and owners who enjoy a lively small dog Vocal behavior and safe handling
Shih Tzu Small Long, flowing double coat High in full coat; moderate in pet trim Low visible shedding Low-moderate Indoor companion homes Heat intolerance, swimming risk, and face care
Siberian Husky Medium Thick double coat Moderate routinely; high during coat blow Very heavy seasonally High Active owners with secure containment Running, escaping, noise, and heavy shedding
Yorkshire Terrier Small Long, straight, silky Very high in full coat Low visible shedding Low-moderate Urban homes wanting a portable companion Daily grooming and strong terrier character

What counts as a long-haired dog?

Long-haired is a practical description rather than one rigid scientific or kennel classification. For this guide, it includes breeds with visibly long, flowing, shaggy, profusely feathered, curly, or substantial double coats. Coat length overlaps with texture and structure: the AKC explains that canine coats vary in length, texture, and facial furnishings.

That broad definition matters because these coats create different ownership experiences:

Coat description Examples here Primary ownership issue
Long, silky or drop coat Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Havanese Tangles, daily brushing, bathing, and often clipping
Long, feathered coat Cavalier, American Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever Mats and debris on ears, legs, chest, belly, and tail
Shaggy coat Bearded Collie, Briard, Old English Sheepdog Brushing through to the skin and undercoat maintenance
Curly or plush coat Bichon Frise Mat prevention, bathing, drying, and regular clipping
Heavy double coat Newfoundland, Pomeranian, Siberian Husky Seasonal coat blowouts, loose hair, and thorough drying
Short-faced long coat Pekingese, Shih Tzu Coat care combined with extra heat and breathing caution

Coat length does not predict how much a dog sheds, how much exercise it needs, how trainable it will be, or how strongly it affects an allergic person. A low-shedding silky coat can require more daily maintenance than a shorter coat, while a medium-length double coat can fill a home with loose hair.

The 17 long-haired dog breeds

1. Afghan Hound

Coat and appearance: The adult Afghan Hound has a distinctive long, silky, flowing coat. Puppies can look very different, with shorter, fuzzy coats, so a puppy’s current appearance does not necessarily predict the finished coat.

Personality and activity: This athletic sighthound is dignified, independent, loyal, and often aloof with strangers. It needs opportunities to run, but those opportunities should be in a secure, high-fenced area. A strong chase instinct makes this an unreliable off-leash breed in unsecured places.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grooming and shedding: Grooming is very high maintenance. The AKC notes that several hours of brushing per week may be needed, along with regular bathing and conditioning. This is not a wash-and-wear dog.

Best fit and caution: Choose an Afghan Hound if you are an experienced owner who wants an athletic, distinctive dog and is prepared for substantial coat work. Its independence, running needs, chase instinct, and grooming burden can overwhelm a novice.

Health question: Ask the breeder to show the recommended parent-club health screening records for both parents and explain any limitations of those tests.

2. Bearded Collie

Coat and appearance: The Bearded Collie has a full, shaggy double coat. It is often perceived as a long-haired breed, although the official standard describes the coat as approximately medium length.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personality and activity: Beardies are boisterous, friendly, intelligent, outdoorsy, and sometimes willful. Their herding background makes training, enrichment, and regular activity important.

Grooming and shedding: Plan on daily brushing. The AKC describes a typical maintained brushing session as roughly five to ten minutes, but neglected coats can take far longer. The coat readily collects tangles and outdoor debris.

Best fit and caution: This breed suits an active household that enjoys training and outdoor pursuits. It is a poor choice for someone seeking a decorative coat with minimal upkeep or a dog content with little mental stimulation.

Health question: Ask which current breed-specific screenings the parent club recommends and request public records for the sire and dam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Bichon Frise

Coat and appearance: The Bichon Frise has a plush, curly, white coat. It is better described as a curly long-coated breed than as a straight-haired, flowing-coat breed.

Personality and activity: Small, social, adaptable, and highly people-oriented, the Bichon can suit many city and family homes. It still needs walks, play, training, and regular social contact.

Grooming and shedding: Its low visible shedding can appeal to people who dislike hair on furniture, but loose hair can remain trapped in the coat and contribute to mats. Brushing, bathing, thorough drying, and regular clipping are part of responsible care. Low visible shedding does not make a Bichon allergy-proof.

Best fit and caution: This can be a practical choice for a social family or apartment household that budgets for grooming. Do not mistake less visible shedding for no maintenance or no allergens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Health question: Ask for the parents’ recommended OFA or CHIC-related records and for a description of any skin, dental, eye, or orthopedic issues in the line.

4. Briard

Coat and appearance: The Briard has a long, slightly wavy or shaggy herding coat with prominent facial furnishings. Brushing must reach through the outer coat to the skin.

Personality and activity: This is a large, intelligent, protective, tireless dog capable of making independent decisions. It needs early socialization, consistent training, physical activity, and mental work.

Grooming and shedding: The AKC recommends brushing several times per week down to the skin. Skimming the surface leaves hidden mats underneath the shaggy coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit and caution: Briards are better for experienced owners who genuinely want a working-type dog. The combination of size, protective instincts, work drive, and coat care may overwhelm a first-time owner.

Health question: Ask the breeder to identify the current parent-club screening protocol and provide verifiable results for both parents, not just a verbal statement that the line is healthy.

5. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Coat and appearance: The Cavalier has a silky coat with feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail. It is long-coated, but usually less demanding than a floor-length Maltese, Yorkie, or Lhasa Apso coat.

Personality and activity: Cavaliers are typically gentle, affectionate, attentive, and adaptable. Despite their toy-group classification, many enjoy walks, retrieving, and other moderate activities.

Grooming and shedding: Brush regularly and check the feathering for burrs and mats, particularly behind the ears, under the legs, and around the chest and tail. Expect moderate shedding rather than a hair-free home.

Best fit and caution: This is a versatile companion for many families, provided adults supervise interactions and the dog receives exercise and companionship. Health screening is especially important: the breed health statement hosted by the AKC identifies cardiac, eye, hip, and patella evaluations among the concerns prospective owners should discuss.

Health question: Can you show the sire’s and dam’s cardiac, eye, hip, and patella results, with the registered names matching the actual parents?

6. American Cocker Spaniel

Coat and appearance: The American Cocker Spaniel has a lush, feathered coat, long ears, and furnishings on the legs, chest, and belly. In U.S. terminology, Cocker Spaniel and English Cocker Spaniel are separate AKC breeds; this profile refers to the American Cocker Spaniel. See the English Cocker Spaniel profile if comparing the two.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personality and activity: American Cockers are generally merry, affectionate, trainable, playful, and energetic without requiring the endurance exercise of a Siberian Husky or working herder.

Grooming and shedding: The coat, ears, and feathering need consistent, professional-quality care. Brush and inspect the ears frequently, manage mats before they tighten, and expect bathing and drying to take real time.

Best fit and caution: This can be a strong family-companion choice for owners willing to manage grooming, ear care, exercise, training, and weight. It is not a sensible match for someone who wants a low-maintenance sporting dog.

Health question: Ask which parent-club tests were completed, whether the parents’ ear and eye histories are available, and whether results can be verified publicly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Golden Retriever

Coat and appearance: The Golden Retriever has a glossy, medium-length double coat rather than a floor-length coat. Its feathering around the neck, legs, belly, tail, and hindquarters gives it a long-haired appearance.

Personality and activity: Friendly, trainable, athletic, and adaptable, Goldens often enjoy walks, retrieving, swimming, training, and dog sports. They generally need more than brief potty trips and occasional indoor play.

Grooming and shedding: Brush regularly and prepare for substantial hair around the home, with heavier seasonal shedding. Feathering can collect burrs and form mats after outdoor activity.

Best fit and caution: A Golden can suit an active family seeking an affectionate, trainable partner. It is a poor fit for someone who dislikes shedding, cannot provide daily activity, or wants a quiet, sedentary dog. The AKC’s breed guidance is a useful starting point for evaluating the lifestyle match.

Health question: Ask for the parents’ publicly verifiable, breed-recommended orthopedic, eye, cardiac, and other screening records rather than relying on a generic health guarantee.

8. Havanese

Coat and appearance: The Havanese has a long, soft, silky coat. Owners may keep it brushed and full, clip it into a shorter pet trim, or maintain it in cords; each style has different upkeep.

Personality and activity: Cheerful, social, intelligent, and adaptable, Havanese often do well in city or suburban living. They are highly people-oriented and may struggle when left alone for prolonged periods.

Grooming and shedding: In full coat, the AKC recommends daily grooming to prevent mats and tangles. A short trim reduces brushing time but does not eliminate bathing, nail, ear, dental, or skin care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit and caution: Consider a Havanese if you want a small, sociable companion and can provide company and grooming. It is not ideal for a household where the dog will regularly be isolated all day.

Health question: Ask to see the parents’ recommended screening results and ask how adult dogs in the line handle being alone, grooming, noise, and household activity.

9. Lhasa Apso

Coat and appearance: The Lhasa Apso is known for a dense, lavish coat traditionally parted down the center and grown toward the floor, with heavy facial hair. A practical pet trim can make daily life easier, but it does not turn the breed into a no-maintenance dog.

Personality and activity: Lhasas are confident, intelligent, independent, alert, and often reserved with strangers. They may need less strenuous exercise than a herding or sporting breed, but they still need daily walks, training, enrichment, and social contact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grooming and shedding: A full coat requires frequent brushing and careful face, eye, ear, and sanitary-area care. Check behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar for hidden tangles.

Best fit and caution: This breed can suit an owner who appreciates a lower-exercise but opinionated companion. Small size does not mean easy temperament or easy coat care.

Health question: Ask for the current parent-club screening recommendations, public records for both parents, and the breeder’s history of eye, skin, ear, and orthopedic problems.

10. Maltese

Coat and appearance: The Maltese has a classic long, straight, silky white coat that can be grown to floor length. Many pet owners choose a shorter trim for practicality.

Personality and activity: Playful, charming, intelligent, and surprisingly athletic for its size, the Maltese can adapt to small-home living. It still needs daily activity, training, and interaction.

Grooming and shedding: A full coat needs regular, often daily, brushing to prevent mats. The coat may leave less visible loose hair than a double-coated breed, but hair can remain trapped in tangles and the dog is not guaranteed to be allergy-friendly.

Best fit and caution: Maltese may suit urban owners who want a small companion and are willing to groom or pay for grooming. Their small, delicate bodies require careful supervision around young children and larger pets.

Health question: Ask whether both parents have completed the breed-recommended screenings and request veterinary records showing how the breeder monitors dental, eye, patella, and other relevant concerns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Newfoundland

Coat and appearance: The Newfoundland has a massive, heavy double coat with a coarse, flat outer layer. It is a giant dog, not merely a large fluffy dog: the AKC states that males can reach 150 pounds.

Personality and activity: Newfoundlands are often described as sweet-tempered, patient, powerful, trainable, and fond of water. An AKC guideline gives about half an hour of moderate daily exercise, but individual conditioning, age, health, and weather still matter.

Grooming and shedding: Plan on at least weekly thorough brushing, with daily sessions possible during seasonal shedding. Some Newfoundlands shed throughout the year. Their size also makes bathing, drying, grooming-table access, and transport substantially more difficult.

Best fit and caution: Choose this breed only if you are prepared for giant-dog food, veterinary care, medication, equipment, transportation, boarding, drool, hair, and space requirements. A gentle temperament does not eliminate the risk of an enormous dog accidentally knocking over a child.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Health question: Ask for public, breed-recommended orthopedic, cardiac, and other health-screening records for both parents and discuss the expected lifespan and medical costs with your veterinarian.

12. Old English Sheepdog

Coat and appearance: The Old English Sheepdog has an iconic, profuse double coat and a shaggy outline. The coat can hide the dog’s body and conceal mats or skin problems if it is not parted and inspected.

Personality and activity: Old English Sheepdogs are intelligent, agreeable, watchful, and strong. With appropriate exercise and training, some can settle comfortably indoors, but they remain physically substantial herding dogs.

Grooming and shedding: Grooming must reach the skin at least weekly. The AKC notes that pet dogs may need regular brushing between baths and haircuts and that professional grooming may be needed several times a month.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit and caution: This breed suits a family that genuinely wants a large shaggy dog and can afford lifelong grooming. Expect hair, mud, possible barking, and a dog that can be difficult to bathe or transport.

Health question: Ask the breeder to identify the current parent-club screening protocol and show records for the actual parents, including any relevant orthopedic, eye, or inherited-disease evaluations.

13. Pekingese

Coat and appearance: The Pekingese has its longest coat around the neck and shoulders, creating a characteristic mane, along with feathering on the body and legs. It is also a compact, short-muzzled toy breed.

Personality and activity: Regal, independent, loyal, and alert, the Pekingese is not necessarily tolerant of rough handling or constant physical attention. Short walks and indoor enrichment can be appropriate, depending on the individual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grooming and shedding: Routine coat care should include brushing and inspection of the face, eyes, furnishings, and areas that rub against harnesses or bedding. Mats and facial discharge should not be ignored.

Best fit and caution: Pekingese may suit a calm home or older children who understand respectful handling. Their short muzzle requires extra caution in heat, humidity, and strenuous exercise.

Health question: Ask what screening the parents received for the breed’s structural and inherited health risks, and request full veterinary records rather than a simple statement that the dog is healthy.

14. Pomeranian

Coat and appearance: The Pomeranian has an abundant double coat, including a prominent chest and shoulder frill. Its small frame does not make the coat automatically easy to maintain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personality and activity: Tiny, alert, intelligent, active, and often vocal, Pomeranians have big personalities. The AKC says indoor play and short walks can meet much of the breed’s exercise requirement, although training and enrichment remain essential.

Grooming and shedding: Regular brushing is needed to keep the coat free of tangles, and seasonal shedding can be conspicuous. Use tools suited to a small double coat rather than aggressively stripping the undercoat.

Best fit and caution: Pomeranians can suit apartments and owners who want an energetic small dog. Potential owners should be prepared for vocal behavior and protect the dog from falls, rough handling, doors, larger dogs, and accidental injury.

Health question: Ask for the parents’ recommended patella, cardiac, eye, and other breed-relevant screening records, and ask how the breeder socializes puppies to handling and grooming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  • COMFORTABLE & DURABLE: Designed with a soft, ergonomic anti-slip grip for comfortable, long grooming sessions for both cats and dogs of all hair types.

15. Shih Tzu

Coat and appearance: The Shih Tzu has a long, flowing double coat and is commonly maintained in a shorter puppy trim. A short haircut reduces tangling but does not remove the need for regular grooming.

Personality and activity: Affectionate, playful, outgoing, and suited to indoor companion life, Shih Tzus may have their basic exercise needs met with short daily walks and indoor play. They still need training, social contact, and mental stimulation.

Grooming and shedding: A full coat needs frequent brushing, face and eye care, ear checks, bathing, and careful drying. A pet trim usually makes the routine more manageable but requires recurring clipping.

Best fit and caution: Shih Tzus can work well in apartments and quieter homes. The breed does not tolerate heat well and is not a good swimmer, so hot-weather management and water safety are essential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Health question: Ask for the parents’ breed-recommended screening results and discuss airway, eye, dental, skin, and heat-management concerns with your veterinarian before choosing a puppy.

16. Siberian Husky

Coat and appearance: The Siberian Husky has a thick, medium-length double coat rather than a continuously growing, silky coat. It qualifies here because its dense coat creates the full, fluffy appearance many readers mean by long-haired.

Personality and activity: Social, athletic, clean, and bred to run, Huskies need substantial daily physical and mental activity. They may also be noisy, determined, and skilled at escaping inadequate containment.

Grooming and shedding: Weekly brushing is a reasonable routine starting point, but twice-yearly coat shedding can require intensive undercoat removal. Expect significant loose hair and do not choose this breed if you want a low-shedding home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit and caution: A Husky may suit an active owner with secure fencing, reliable containment, and time for exercise and enrichment. It is a poor fit for someone who expects a quiet dog to remain alone all day or to walk reliably off leash in unsecured areas.

Health question: Ask for the parents’ current breed-specific eye, hip, and other recommended screening results and verify the records through a public database when available.

17. Yorkshire Terrier

Coat and appearance: The Yorkshire Terrier has a long, straight, silky, floor-length coat with a hair-like texture. Its small size and low visible shedding can be appealing, but the long coat is one of the most labor-intensive toy-dog coats.

Personality and activity: Affectionate, sprightly, intelligent, feisty, and unmistakably terrier-like, a Yorkie needs training and activity despite being portable and small.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grooming and shedding: The AKC recommends daily brushing for a long-coated Yorkie and says bathing may be needed about weekly when the coat is kept long. Many owners choose a shorter trim, which reduces but does not eliminate maintenance.

Best fit and caution: Yorkies can suit urban homes and owners who want a small companion with a lively character. Do not mistake their size for fragility-free ownership: careful handling, dental care, training, and coat maintenance are still required.

Health question: Ask for public records of the parents’ recommended patella, eye, and other breed-relevant screenings and ask how puppies are introduced to brushing, nail care, and restraint.

Which long-haired breed is right for your lifestyle?

For active owners

Start by considering the Afghan Hound, Bearded Collie, Briard, Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky, or American Cocker Spaniel. These breeds differ substantially: a Husky needs running and secure containment, an Afghan needs a safe place to sprint and accepts independent decision-making, while a Golden often combines athleticism with a more people-oriented training style. An active owner must also be willing to manage shedding or grooming; coat preference and exercise preference do not always point to the same breed.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

For affectionate family companionship

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Havanese, Shih Tzus, and Newfoundlands are often considered affectionate, family-oriented choices. None is automatically child-proof. Young children need active adult supervision, and handling must be appropriate to the dog’s size and temperament. A toy dog can be injured by rough play, while a Newfoundland can knock over a toddler without intending to.

The AKC’s family guidance supports treating children and dogs as a supervised responsibility rather than assuming a breed label guarantees safety.

For apartments or smaller homes

Havanese, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Pekingese, Lhasa Apsos, Pomeranians, Bichon Frise, and some Cavaliers can adapt to apartment living. Square footage is only one part of the decision. Consider barking, exercise, elevator and stair access, heat, separation tolerance, grooming space, and whether you can provide daily walks and enrichment.

A Pomeranian may exercise through indoor play and short walks, while a Husky is likely to become frustrated without far more activity regardless of how large the apartment is.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For people who dislike loose hair

Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Havanese, and Bichon Frise may shed less visibly than a Newfoundland, Golden Retriever, or Siberian Husky. However, low visible shedding often means that loose hair remains in the coat and must be removed by brushing. These breeds can require more hands-on grooming, not less.

For lower-exercise households

Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Maltese, Lhasa Apso, Havanese, and Pomeranian may be more realistic than a Husky, Briard, Bearded Collie, Afghan Hound, or Golden Retriever. Lower exercise does not mean no exercise: every dog needs appropriate walks, enrichment, training, social contact, and veterinary care.

For first-time owners

A social Bichon Frise, Havanese, Cavalier, or Golden Retriever may be worth discussing with an experienced breeder or rescue professional, but each has a different care profile. Bichons and Havanese require serious coat maintenance; Cavaliers require careful health screening; Goldens need activity and shed heavily. First-time owners should be cautious about choosing an Afghan Hound, Briard, or other demanding working-type breed solely because of appearance.

For someone who wants a giant dog

The Newfoundland is the clearest match on this list, with the Old English Sheepdog also offering a large, shaggy presence. Giant-dog ownership affects nearly every part of life: food, medication doses, veterinary bills, grooming, vehicle choice, boarding, housing, exercise equipment, and the ability to handle an emergency. Plan for drool, hair, muddy paws, and a dog that may weigh as much as an adult person.

For hot or humid climates

Dense coats and short-faced breeds require careful heat management. Provide shade, water, indoor cooling, a healthy body condition, and exercise during cooler times of day. Shih Tzus and Pekingese need particular caution because of their short facial structures. A double-coated dog should not ordinarily be shaved simply to make summer easier: the AKC warns that shaving can damage the topcoat, increase sunburn and skin-problem risk, and does not stop shedding. Severe matting or an inability to dry the skin may require professional clipping, but that is a different situation.

For someone who wants a quiet dog

Coat appearance says nothing about barking. Pomeranians, Lhasa Apsos, and some Havanese may be vocal, while Siberian Huskies can be especially expressive. Ask foster carers or breeders about noise, alert barking, howling, and response to neighbors, visitors, hallway sounds, and being left alone.

Grooming a long-haired dog: the routine you are really agreeing to

The biggest mistake new owners make is brushing only the visible surface. A fluffy dog can look polished while dense mats develop underneath. Grooming should be planned around coat structure, not just the number of minutes a dog appears to need on a good day.

Brush to the skin

  • Use a soft or medium slicker brush for many dense or feathered coats.
  • Follow with a long-toothed metal comb on long coats to confirm that the brush reached the skin.
  • Use an undercoat rake or suitable de-shedding tool during seasonal coat release in breeds such as the Newfoundland, Pomeranian, Golden Retriever, Old English Sheepdog, and Siberian Husky.
  • Pay special attention to friction zones: behind the ears, armpits, chest, belly, tail, collar or harness areas, and the backs of the legs.

The AKC’s grooming guidance recommends matching tools to coat type. Do not assume a powerful de-shedding tool is appropriate for every dog or every area.

Prevent and handle mats safely

Work from the outside edge of a small, loose tangle inward with patience. Stop if the mat is tight against the skin, the dog is painful, or the dog is becoming distressed. Severe matting should be handled by a professional groomer or veterinarian, especially when it hides sores, parasites, bruising, inflammation, or infected skin.

Never use household scissors close to the skin to cut out a mat. Dog skin can be pulled up into the mat, making a serious cut easy to cause. A professional may need to clip the coat short and examine the skin underneath.

Bathing, conditioning, and drying

Bathe as needed for the individual dog, coat, lifestyle, and veterinary advice. Overbathing can remove natural oils and dry the skin. Rinse shampoo thoroughly, use conditioner when appropriate for the coat, and dry dense coats completely. A damp undercoat can tangle, remain against the skin, and create problems in humid weather.

Long-coated dogs may need a professional dryer or a carefully managed home drying routine. Never leave a dog unattended with unsafe grooming equipment or force a frightened dog through a stressful session.

Eyes, ears, paws, nails, and teeth

  • Inspect eyes and facial hair for discharge. Heavy, discolored, one-sided, or foul-smelling discharge needs veterinary attention rather than cosmetic wiping.
  • Check drop ears and dense ear furnishings for odor, redness, wax, moisture, or discomfort. Do not push tools deep into the ear canal.
  • Trim or grind nails regularly. Long nails can alter gait and cause pain.
  • Inspect paw pads and trim excess hair only with appropriate guidance, particularly when it traps moisture or debris.
  • Make daily tooth brushing the ideal target with dog-specific toothpaste; human toothpaste is not a substitute.

Introduce puppies gradually to brushing, feet handling, nail care, ear checks, tooth brushing, dryers, mouths, and gentle restraint. One AKC grooming guide suggests a first professional visit after the puppy has received vaccinations, around 12 weeks, but the exact timing should follow the veterinarian, groomer, and local facility’s requirements.

How often will professional grooming be needed?

There is no universal four-to-eight-week rule for every long-haired dog. Frequency depends on whether the coat is full or clipped, how well it is maintained at home, the dog’s tolerance, climate, activity, coat density, and local grooming prices. Afghan Hounds, full-coated Havanese, Maltese, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, Yorkies, Briards, and Old English Sheepdogs can require particularly substantial professional help. Ask a groomer for a realistic schedule before adopting or buying the dog.

Are long-haired dogs hypoallergenic?

No dog breed is truly allergy-free. Dog allergens come from proteins in dander, saliva, and other sources, not simply from visible hair. A dog that sheds less may spread less hair around the room, but that does not guarantee a lower allergic response.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology notes that homes with dogs marketed as hypoallergenic can have allergen levels comparable to homes with other dogs. If allergies matter, spend time indoors with the specific dog you may adopt and consult a board-certified allergist. Individual dogs can differ, so do not rely on a breed label alone.

Health screening: what to ask before choosing a dog

Health testing reduces risk; it does not guarantee a disease-free puppy or adult dog. A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss the health history of parents, siblings, grandparents, and previous offspring, not just produce a generic contract.

How to check breeder records

  1. Ask for the sire’s and dam’s registered names.
  2. Search the public Orthopedic Foundation for Animals database and confirm that the records correspond to the actual parents.
  3. Check the breed-specific CHIC screening protocol to learn which recommended tests apply.
  4. Ask whether each test was performed by the appropriate specialist and whether results are current and age-appropriate.
  5. Understand what each result means. According to the OFA’s explanation, a CHIC number means that the recommended screenings were completed and made publicly available; it is not a guarantee that every result is normal.
  6. Ask what health problems have appeared in the broader family and how the breeder responds when a dog develops a condition.

For a Cavalier, for example, ask specifically about the cardiac, eye, hip, and patella evaluations identified in the breed health statement. For every other breed, ask the breeder to explain the current recommendations of the relevant national parent club rather than accepting a one-size-fits-all checklist.

Questions for a breeder

  • What health tests are recommended by this breed’s national parent club?
  • Can I see the sire’s and dam’s public OFA records?
  • Are the results linked to the actual parents and appropriate for their ages?
  • What health issues have occurred in parents, siblings, grandparents, and previous offspring?
  • What adult coat will this puppy probably develop, and how much brushing, bathing, drying, and professional grooming will it require?
  • How are puppies introduced to brushes, dryers, nail handling, ears, mouths, and restraint?
  • How do the parents behave around children, strangers, dogs, cats, household noise, and being alone?
  • What veterinary records, written contract, return policy, and support are provided?

Questions for a rescue or shelter

  • Has the dog lived in a foster home, and what is its observed behavior there?
  • How does the dog respond to brushing, bathing, drying, nail care, and handling?
  • Has it had severe matting, ear infections, skin disease, hot spots, allergies, dental disease, or orthopedic problems?
  • How much exercise does the dog actually need, and how does it behave when left alone?
  • Does it bark, escape, chase, guard resources, or struggle around children or other animals?
  • Was the coat clipped because of matting, and what does the underlying skin look like?

Common ownership dilemmas

I want a long-haired dog but cannot groom every day

Consider a shorter pet trim for a Havanese, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Lhasa Apso, or Yorkshire Terrier, or look for a breed with a more manageable feathered coat. You can also budget for regular professional grooming or choose an adult rescue whose coat, tolerance, and maintenance needs can be assessed directly.

Clipping does not convert a high-maintenance breed into a low-maintenance one. Short coats still need bathing, drying, nail and dental care, ear checks, and regular appointments if the style is maintained professionally.

I want an active dog but hate shedding

This is a genuine trade-off. Siberian Huskies and Golden Retrievers may be excellent athletic companions, but they shed heavily. A lower-shedding long-coated breed may leave less hair on furniture but may be less suited to endurance activity or may demand more daily brushing. Decide which compromise you can live with rather than expecting one breed to eliminate every inconvenience.

The coat is badly matted

Do not pull hard, bathe a severely matted dog before assessment, or cut close to the skin with household scissors. Arrange a professional groomer or veterinary visit, particularly if the dog is painful, elderly, obese, medically compromised, or distressed. The underlying skin may need treatment after the coat is removed.

The puppy’s coat does not look long yet

Some breeds change dramatically as they mature. Afghan Hound puppies are a clear example: their puppy coat can be shorter and fuzzier than the adult coat. Evaluate the adult coat, grooming schedule, and likely maintenance requirements rather than choosing based only on the puppy’s current appearance.

A simple final shortlist method

  1. Set non-negotiables: allergies, maximum adult size, secure fencing, child ages, heat, noise, and how long the dog will be alone.
  2. Choose your grooming limit: daily home brushing, weekly brushing with seasonal increases, or recurring professional grooming.
  3. Choose your activity level: low-moderate companion exercise, moderate family activity, or high-drive running and training.
  4. Compare shedding separately: low visible shedding is not the same as allergy safety or low maintenance.
  5. Research health screening: review parent-club recommendations and verify records through OFA where available.
  6. Meet adult dogs: Observe behavior around grooming, strangers, children, other dogs, household noise, and being alone.
  7. Calculate the real budget: Include food, veterinary care, grooming, equipment, training, boarding, transportation, and emergency care. Giant breeds generally increase many of these costs.

After this process, a reader who loves silky coats might compare the Havanese, Maltese, and Yorkshire Terrier; an active family might compare the Golden Retriever, American Cocker Spaniel, and Bearded Collie; and someone seeking a giant dog might focus on the Newfoundland and Old English Sheepdog. The goal is not to identify one universally best breed, but to eliminate the breeds whose daily requirements do not fit your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which long-haired dog sheds the least?

Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Havanese, and Bichon Frise may produce less visible loose hair than heavy double-coated breeds. They are not maintenance-free or allergy-proof: loose hair can remain trapped in the coat, and all dogs produce allergens.

Can I shave my long-haired dog in summer?

Do not shave a double-coated dog simply because the weather is hot. Shaving can damage the topcoat, increase sunburn and skin-problem risk, and does not stop shedding. Use shade, indoor cooling, hydration, cooler exercise times, weight management, and veterinary advice instead. Severe matting is a separate situation that may require professional clipping.

What is the best long-haired dog for an apartment?

Havanese, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Bichon Frise, Pekingese, Lhasa Apsos, Pomeranians, and some Cavaliers can adapt to apartments. The decision depends on exercise, barking, separation tolerance, heat, grooming, and daily routine—not apartment size alone.

Are long-haired dogs good with children?

Some, including Cavaliers, Golden Retrievers, Havanese, Shih Tzus, and Newfoundlands, are often described as family-oriented, but no breed guarantees safe behavior. Small dogs can be injured by rough handling, while large dogs can accidentally knock over young children. Adults must supervise every interaction and teach children respectful handling.

How can I tell whether a breeder has done meaningful health testing?

Ask for the sire’s and dam’s registered names, check their public OFA records, review the breed-specific CHIC protocol, and confirm that results correspond to the actual parents. A CHIC number shows that recommended screenings were completed and made public; it is not a guarantee that every result is normal.

The Bottom Line

Choose a long-haired dog for the life you can provide, not just the coat you admire. Before committing, make sure you can manage the brushing and professional grooming, accept the breed’s shedding level, meet its exercise and companionship needs, handle its size and climate risks, and verify appropriate health records. Meet the individual dog whenever possible: the best match is the one whose temperament and daily care fit your household.
