Plan for warm, quiet water; consistent chemistry; excellent filtration and maintenance; controlled, varied feeding; and fish whose previous conditions you can match. Most discus sold today are captive-bred and generally more forgiving than wild-caught fish, yet both still depend on preparation and stability. This guide gives you a practical setup and care routine without pretending there is one universal tank size or a shortcut around water quality.
Is a discus aquarium suitable for a beginner?
Discus are a reasonable choice for a careful beginner who is willing to prepare the aquarium before purchase and maintain it on a schedule. They are a poor choice for someone looking for a fish that tolerates neglected water, abrupt temperature changes or irregular feeding. The University of Florida IFAS describes discus as a challenging species even in aquaculture, which puts the home-keeping expectation in perspective: success comes from repeatable husbandry rather than improvisation. Read the University of Florida IFAS overview for that broader context.

The fish’s source changes the difficulty. Aqueon says captive-bred discus are generally easier for home keepers, while wild-caught fish have more specialized water-chemistry and dietary needs. Ask which type you are buying, where it was raised, and what water it has been living in before you choose equipment or adjust parameters.

| Decision | What it means for your care plan |
|---|---|
| Captive-bred discus | Usually the more manageable option. They may adapt to dechlorinated tap water when it is suitable and stable, but you should still match the seller’s established conditions gradually. |
| Wild-caught discus | Expect narrower tolerance for changes and more specialized water and diet needs. Confirm the collection locality and the exact water in which the fish were held. |
| Mixed-source group | Do not assume all fish have identical requirements. Quarantine and obtain source information for each group before combining them. |

Water temperature and chemistry: start with the fish’s current conditions
Use a warm, stable target
Aqueon’s general captive-care guidance is 82–86°F (about 28–30°C). A heater and an independent thermometer are therefore core equipment, not optional upgrades. Set the heater so the aquarium remains in the target range through room-temperature changes, and check the thermometer regularly rather than trusting the heater dial alone.
Wild Heckel discus may prefer water near 90°F, according to Aqueon. That is not a reason to heat every discus aquarium to 90°F; it is a reminder to identify the fish and its established conditions before setting a target. Ask the seller whether the fish are captive-bred, wild-caught or a specific wild form, then make changes gradually.
Keep the chemistry soft and slightly acidic
Aqueon gives pH 6.0–7.0 and hardness of 1–4 dKH as its discus guidance. Treat those values as a working range, not a challenge to chase a particular number every day. Stability within a suitable range is safer than repeated corrections that cause swings. Test your source water and aquarium water so you know whether your tap supply can remain consistent after dechlorination.
Match replacement water
Ask the retailer for the temperature, pH and hardness in the holding system. Aqueon specifically recommends asking about the water in which the fish were raised. When you perform a water change, prepare replacement water that is dechlorinated and compatible with the aquarium; do not pour in water with a sudden temperature or chemistry difference.
Captive-bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water when that water is appropriate, says Aqueon. The same guide describes reverse-osmosis or deionized water supplemented with its water-renewal product as providing conditions it considers best. RO/DI is not mandatory for every captive-bred group. It becomes useful when your source water is unsuitable or inconsistent and you can remineralize and test it reliably. Switching from tap to RO/DI abruptly can be more dangerous than staying with stable, suitable tap water.

Plan the aquarium around the group and your maintenance capacity
There is no single universal minimum tank size
Common online minimums conflict, and the established care sources used here do not settle on one number. Do not buy a tank solely because it is labeled a 55- or 75-gallon discus setup. Decide the adult group you intend to keep, allow room for efficient filtration and maintenance, and confirm the plan with a reputable retailer or an experienced discus keeper. The appropriate volume depends on adult fish, group size, aquascape, filtration, water-change ability and how consistently you can maintain it.
A larger aquarium gives you more water volume to buffer small mistakes and more swimming room, but it does not compensate for poor maintenance. A crowded aquarium can accumulate waste quickly even when its stated gallon capacity sounds generous. Conversely, a smaller group in a well-filtered, easy-to-service aquarium may be more manageable than an overstocked larger tank.
Create quiet flow and shelter
Discus are associated with floodplain lakes and flooded forests in the lowland Amazon and its tributaries. Aqueon describes them as favoring quiet water rather than strong current. Aim the filter return along the surface or against a wall so water is circulated without blasting the fish. Use wood, plants or other smooth decor to break sight lines and provide cover, while leaving open space for the group to move and feed.
Choose decor that cannot scrape a discus’s tall, laterally compressed body. Keep the layout easy to vacuum: dense, inaccessible pockets of substrate can trap uneaten food and waste. Gentle circulation still needs to move water through the filter; “quiet” means low stress, not stagnant corners.
Build filtration for clean water
Discus require pristine water quality. Select filtration that can process the planned bioload and that you can maintain without dismantling the entire aquarium. Mechanical media should capture solids, biological media should support the nitrogen cycle, and the intake should be guarded so fish cannot be injured. A prefilter sponge can also make routine cleaning easier and protect small fish.

Before adding discus, establish the aquarium’s biological filtration and verify that ammonia and nitrite remain at zero on repeated tests. Use a freshwater test kit to track pH, hardness and the nitrogen cycle. If readings drift, correct the cause—overfeeding, inadequate filtration, decaying material or unsuitable replacement water—rather than repeatedly adding pH-adjusting chemicals.

Equipment checklist for a first discus aquarium
| Item | Why it matters | Selection notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable aquarium heater | Maintains the warm target range. | Size it for the aquarium and room conditions; use an independent thermometer to verify actual water temperature. |
| Independent thermometer | Detects heater drift and room-related fluctuations. | Place it where you can read it during every check. |
| Filter and intake guard | Provides mechanical and biological filtration without excessive current. | Choose capacity for the planned group and keep spare media or a prefilter sponge available. |
| Water test kit | Shows whether temperature, pH, hardness, ammonia and nitrite are stable. | No particular brand is required; test source water and aquarium water before purchase. |
| Siphon or water changer | Removes debris and supports weekly partial changes. | Pick a model that lets you control flow so fish and substrate are not disturbed. |
| Dechlorinator | Makes municipal replacement water safe when used as directed. | Measure the replacement volume and dose according to the product label. |
| Discus-appropriate flakes or pellets plus supplementary foods | Supports a varied feeding rotation. | Use foods the fish already accept when possible; no single brand is required. |
| Quarantine aquarium | Lets you observe new fish and avoid introducing illness to an established group. | Provide heat, filtration and hiding places matched to the seller’s conditions. |
Set up and acclimate the aquarium in a controlled sequence
- Test the source water. Record temperature, pH, hardness and disinfectant information before buying fish. If your tap water is unsuitable, design a remineralized-water routine first.
- Install and run the equipment. Set the heater, thermometer and filter, then check that the return creates circulation without a strong jet across the swimming area.
- Establish biological filtration. Cycle the aquarium and confirm stable ammonia and nitrite readings over repeated tests. Do not use the fish as the test subjects for an uncycled tank.
- Confirm the seller’s conditions. Ask for the holding temperature, pH, hardness, feeding routine and whether the fish are captive-bred or wild-caught. Record the answers so your first water change and feeding match what the fish know.
- Inspect the entire seller tank. Do not select a fish that appears healthy when sickly fish are present in the same tank; OATA specifically advises against that purchase.
- Transport and acclimate slowly. Keep the container shaded and temperature-protected. Equalize temperature and add small amounts of aquarium water over time, following the retailer’s acclimation instructions. Avoid dumping transport water into the display aquarium.
- Observe before feeding heavily. Give new fish a calm period, then offer a small portion of the food they were eating at the store. Remove anything left behind.
Water changes and daily stability
Use a weekly routine as your starting point
Aqueon recommends weekly water changes of 10% to 25%, using water compatible with the aquarium. That is a starting range from the care guide, not a guarantee that every stocking level or feeding plan needs exactly the same percentage. Test before and after changes, watch nitrate and waste accumulation, and adjust the routine with an experienced keeper if your group produces more waste.
- Prepare replacement water in a clean container and add dechlorinator according to the measured volume.
- Bring the replacement water close to the aquarium’s temperature and verify it before adding.
- Use a siphon to remove the planned percentage while vacuuming accessible debris.
- Add the new water slowly so the fish are not hit by a current or exposed to a sudden chemistry shift.
- Recheck temperature and observe the fish for normal posture, breathing and activity.
Prevent the common causes of deterioration
OATA advises reducing temperature fluctuations and avoiding overfeeding. Food that remains on the substrate decomposes and adds to the water-quality burden. Keep a written log of temperature, test results, water-change volume and feeding. A log makes gradual drift visible before the fish show stress.
Clean mechanical media when flow falls or debris accumulates, using removed aquarium water rather than chlorinated tap water when appropriate for the media. Replace or clean media according to its function and the manufacturer’s instructions, and avoid replacing all biological media at once.
Feed for access, variety and clean water
Rotate foods instead of relying on one staple
Aqueon advises rotating foods daily. Use a suitable discus flake or pellet as one part of the rotation and add other foods the fish accept and that you can store and handle safely. The goal is variety without allowing any food to decay in the aquarium; the source does not endorse a single brand or one mandatory food.

Control each feeding
Feed once or twice a day and offer only what the fish can consume in two to three minutes, following Aqueon’s guidance. Watch the group while it eats. If food remains after the time window, reduce the next portion and siphon out leftovers. If a fish repeatedly misses meals, check temperature, water quality, social pressure and illness rather than simply adding more food.
Prevent feeding competition
Discus can be slow and deliberate at the food. Aquarium Co-Op notes that similarly sized tank mates help prevent one fish from being outcompeted. Spread food across the feeding area and observe whether smaller or shy fish are receiving their share. A dominant fish that monopolizes one spot may require a layout or feeding method that gives the rest of the group access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose tank mates by temperature, size and behavior
Any companion must tolerate the warm discus range, have a compatible adult size and avoid harassing or outcompeting the discus. Aquarium Co-Op specifically recommends similarly sized tank mates and emphasizes high-temperature tolerance. A fish that prefers cooler water is not a suitable companion simply because it is peaceful in other aquariums.
| Compatibility question | What to check before adding a species |
|---|---|
| Temperature | Can it remain healthy at the discus aquarium’s stable warm setting? |
| Adult size | Will it remain similarly sized, or could it become a predator, prey item or feeding bully? |
| Temperament | Does it avoid fin-nipping, chasing and persistent competition? |
| Food access | Can every fish eat without frantic feeding or leftovers accumulating? |
| Water history | Can its established chemistry be matched without destabilizing the discus aquarium? |
Add companions only after the discus group is eating and the aquarium is stable. Quarantine newcomers when possible, and monitor the whole community rather than assuming a species label guarantees compatibility.

Evaluate the whole system, not one attractive fish
Look at every fish in the seller’s aquarium. OATA advises against buying an apparently healthy fish if sickly fish are present in the same tank, because the group’s condition is relevant to your risk. Ask how long the fish have been at the shop, what they eat, and whether any recent losses or treatments occurred.

Check condition and behavior
- Look for steady swimming, normal posture and active interest in food.
- Check that breathing is not persistently rapid and that fins are not clamped or badly damaged.
- Look for a full, proportionate body rather than severe thinness or a hollow belly.
- Inspect skin and fins for ulcers, cottony growths, excessive mucus, spots or unexplained wounds.
- Observe whether the fish can reach food or is being driven away by tank mates.
These observations do not replace a health guarantee or quarantine. They help you reject a poor source before transport stress and acclimation add another challenge.
Captive-bred, wild-caught, tap and RO/DI: making the main choices
| Choice | Advantages | Risks and preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Captive-bred | Generally easier for home keepers and often more adaptable. | Still require warm, stable water and careful feeding. Confirm the breeder’s chemistry rather than assuming all captive-bred fish are identical. |
| Wild-caught | May appeal to keepers seeking particular forms or natural history. | More specialized water chemistry and dietary needs; some wild Heckel discus may be kept near 90°F. Obtain locality and holding-water details. |
| Dechlorinated tap water | Simple and sustainable when pH, hardness and disinfectant levels are suitable and consistent. | Test every source and replacement batch. Do not switch abruptly if the fish were raised in different water. |
| RO/DI water with remineralization | Can provide controlled conditions when source water is unsuitable or variable; Aqueon describes supplemented RO/DI as its best-condition approach. | Requires reliable remineralization, testing and a repeatable recipe. It is not mandatory for every captive-bred group. |
Troubleshoot problems before they become emergencies
The temperature keeps moving
Verify the reading with an independent thermometer, check heater capacity and placement, and look for drafts, direct sunlight or large changes in room temperature. Correct the cause gradually; a sudden jump to a high setting can be as stressful as a cold period.
Fish are breathing hard or hiding
Test temperature, ammonia, nitrite, pH and hardness immediately. Confirm that the filter is running and that no food or organic material is decomposing. If a water change is needed, use temperature-matched, dechlorinated water rather than untreated tap water.
Food is left on the bottom
Reduce the next portion, feed where the group can see the food, and remove leftovers within the feeding window. Repeated leftovers indicate that the portion, schedule or tank-mate competition needs adjustment.
One fish is losing weight
Observe feeding access closely and compare the fish with its similarly sized companions. Separate the fish only if you have a properly heated, filtered quarantine aquarium and a clear plan; seek experienced aquatic-veterinary or specialist advice for persistent weight loss or visible disease signs.
New fish decline after purchase
Review the seller’s water history, acclimation, quarantine and the condition of the entire source tank. Avoid adding more fish until the cause is understood. A healthy-looking individual from a compromised tank can still carry a problem into your aquarium.
A practical first-month schedule
| Time | Priority |
|---|---|
| Before buying | Test source water; choose the group and tank volume; install heater, thermometer, filtration and a siphon; ask the seller about source, chemistry and diet. |
| During cycling | Run the equipment, establish biological filtration and record repeated test results. Practice preparing temperature-matched, dechlorinated replacement water. |
| Purchase day | Inspect the entire seller tank, reject systems with sickly fish, transport the fish calmly and acclimate without dumping shipping water into the display. |
| First week | Keep the environment quiet, offer small varied meals once or twice daily, remove leftovers and check temperature and behavior every day. |
| Ongoing | Perform the appropriate weekly partial change, maintain filtration, log test results and adjust feeding or maintenance before waste accumulates. |
What success looks like
A well-run discus aquarium is predictable. The heater holds a warm setting, replacement water is prepared the same way, the filter keeps water clear without a harsh current, and the fish eat varied food without leftovers. You know the source conditions of the fish and can explain why your tank volume, group size and maintenance schedule fit your capacity. That consistency—not a magic additive, a universal gallon rule or a single food—is what makes discus care sustainable for a beginner.
