If your dog has fever, eye or nose discharge, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, unusual tiredness, twitching, seizures, or poor coordination, call a veterinarian promptly. Keep the dog separated from every other dog while you wait for instructions. Canine distemper is highly contagious, can become fatal, and its early signs overlap with several other diseases.
Do not try to diagnose distemper from a checklist or treat it with human medicine. A veterinarian may need laboratory testing, and neurologic problems can appear after respiratory or digestive signs seem to improve.

What canine distemper is and why it matters
Canine distemper is a contagious viral disease that can damage several body systems, including the immune, respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, and nervous systems. Dogs are the main concern for household owners, but other susceptible carnivores and wildlife can also carry or develop the infection. Disease severity ranges from mild illness to rapidly progressive, fatal disease.
The virus spreads most often when a susceptible dog inhales droplets released by an infected animal. A dog may continue shedding virus after appearing better. Because signs are not unique to distemper and the infection can change over time, only a veterinary assessment can establish what is happening.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) states in its 2022 Canine Distemper client brochure that “The best way to prevent canine distemper is through vaccination.” Vaccination, exposure control, and prompt veterinary care are the practical tools owners have.
Signs of distemper in dogs and puppies
Distemper does not follow one fixed sequence. A dog may show several signs at once, develop them in stages, or have neurologic disease with little obvious respiratory or digestive illness.
Early and whole-body signs
- Fever, which may be brief or recur later
- Low energy, weakness, or unusual sleepiness
- Reduced appetite or refusal to eat
- Eye discharge or a runny nose
- Coughing or other breathing difficulty
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- A low white-blood-cell count, which may be found on veterinary blood work
A pattern described in the Merck Veterinary Manual begins with a short fever, sometimes accompanied by appetite loss and a low white-blood-cell count. The dog may seem better briefly, then develop another fever with eye or nose discharge, lethargy, and poor appetite. Digestive and respiratory problems can follow. This pattern is useful context, not a diagnostic rule.
Neurologic signs
Nervous-system involvement can occur during the initial illness, after other signs improve, or without an obvious earlier systemic illness. Watch for:

- Stumbling, weakness, or poor coordination
- Circling, a head tilt, or uncontrolled eye movements
- Difficulty standing or walking
- Partial or complete paralysis
Merck notes that neurologic signs can be delayed for weeks or months. A dog that recovered from coughing or diarrhea is not automatically in the clear if new twitching, balance problems, or seizures develop.
Later physical changes
Some survivors develop thickened, hardened tissue on the footpads or nose. If infection occurs before a puppy’s permanent teeth have emerged, tooth development can be damaged. These findings do not by themselves prove that a dog has active distemper, so have them evaluated rather than relying on photographs or online descriptions.
When to seek urgent veterinary care
Contact a veterinarian the same day for a dog with a compatible combination of fever, discharge, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, or marked lethargy—especially if the dog is unvaccinated, incompletely vaccinated, very young, or has an unknown vaccination history. Treat seizures, breathing difficulty, collapse, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, or inability to drink as emergencies.

How distemper spreads and how long a dog may be contagious
Infected respiratory droplets are a common route of transmission. Saliva, nasal secretions, and feces can contaminate hands, clothing, bowls, bedding, and surfaces. A dog can spread virus even when signs are fading.
Shedding time varies substantially. Cornell’s owner guidance describes a typical period of about one month, with reported ranges from two weeks to three months and longer shedding possible in some dogs with neurologic disease. Merck’s owner reference also warns that some dogs can shed virus in saliva and feces for months after they appear recovered. Those ranges cannot predict an individual dog’s risk.
Keep the infected or suspected dog away from other dogs—including dogs in the same household—until the treating veterinarian says isolation can end. Do not use a calendar estimate as permission to resume walks, daycare, grooming, training classes, or dog-park visits.

- Give the sick dog a separate, easy-to-clean room with dedicated bowls, bedding, toys, and waste bags.
- Wash hands with soap and water after handling the dog, its waste, dishes, or bedding. Change contaminated clothing before handling another dog.
- Clean visible soil first, then use a disinfectant whose label allows the intended surface. Follow the label’s dilution, contact time, ventilation, and rinsing instructions.
- Wash bedding and towels using the hottest cycle appropriate for the fabric and dry them completely.
- Prevent shared access to yards, crates, vehicles, food bowls, and grooming equipment until your veterinarian provides a release plan.
Canine distemper virus is sensitive to most disinfectants, according to Merck’s professional reference, so thorough cleaning is useful in homes, kennels, and veterinary facilities. Disinfectant cleans the environment; it does not treat the infected animal. Never mix cleaning chemicals or apply them to a dog.

How veterinarians diagnose distemper
Signs alone cannot reliably distinguish distemper from other viral, bacterial, parasitic, or toxic illnesses. The veterinarian combines the physical examination with age, vaccination history, exposure risk, and the pattern of illness.
Laboratory tests
Merck describes confirmation with reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and antibody tests such as ELISA or immunofluorescence assays. The clinician chooses samples according to the signs—for example, respiratory, ocular, blood, or other specimens—and interprets the result in context. Recent vaccination can affect some test interpretations, so provide exact vaccine dates and product information if available.
Additional evaluation
Blood work can identify low white-blood-cell counts, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, anemia, or organ complications. Imaging or other neurologic tests may be considered when seizures, weakness, or poor coordination are present. Testing is not a substitute for examination: a negative result from one sample or one point in the illness may not answer every clinical question.

Typical elements of a treatment plan
- Intravenous or subcutaneous fluids and electrolyte correction for dehydration
- Carefully selected nutrition, assisted feeding, or appetite support when appropriate
- Medication to control vomiting, diarrhea, fever, pain, or other distressing signs
- Monitoring and treatment of secondary bacterial infections when the veterinarian finds evidence for them
- Anticonvulsant treatment and nursing support for seizures or other neurologic problems
- Oxygen, nebulization, or hospitalization when respiratory disease is severe
- Warmth, cleanliness, frequent repositioning, and protection from aspiration or pressure injuries in weak dogs
The exact plan depends on hydration, breathing, neurologic status, test results, age, and other illnesses. Do not give human pain relievers, leftover antibiotics, supplements, essential oils, or products marketed as antivirals unless the veterinarian specifically prescribes them. Some common human medicines are toxic to dogs, and unnecessary antibiotics can cause harm without treating a virus.
Can a dog survive distemper?
Some dogs recover, while others die or are left with permanent neurologic damage. The AVMA’s 2022 brochure gives the broad statement that “about 1 in 2 dogs will die from their infection.” That is an attributed population-level figure, not a current, case-specific probability for your dog and not a guarantee in either direction.
Merck and Cornell describe outcomes as variable. Respiratory and digestive signs may resolve while twitching, seizures, weakness, or coordination problems continue. Severe or progressive neurologic disease carries a guarded or poor prognosis, and residual deficits can remain even after the dog is no longer shedding virus. Your veterinarian can discuss prognosis using the dog’s examination, trend over time, neurologic findings, hydration and nutrition, and test results.

AAHA classifies canine distemper virus vaccine as a core vaccine recommended for all dogs regardless of geographic location. In the United States, its guidance starts the puppy primary series at 6–8 weeks of age and repeats doses at 2–4 week intervals until the puppy is older than 16 weeks. In areas with high exposure risk, 18–20 weeks may be preferred. The veterinarian must set the schedule for the individual dog and the specific licensed product.
| Stage | AAHA U.S. guidance | Why the timing matters |
|---|---|---|
| First puppy dose | 6–8 weeks | Begins protection while maternal antibodies may still interfere with vaccine response. |
| Further puppy doses | Every 2–4 weeks until older than 16 weeks | Repeated dosing increases the chance that a dose succeeds after maternal antibodies decline. |
| Higher-risk locations | Series may continue to 18–20 weeks | Local exposure risk can influence the veterinarian’s recommendation. |
| First post-series booster | Within one year after the puppy series | Confirms ongoing protection after the initial series. |
| Later boosters | Every three years thereafter, under the applicable product and veterinary protocol | Intervals depend on current guidance, product labeling, and the dog’s circumstances. |
Maternal antibodies passed from the mother can block an early modified-live vaccine, which is why a single puppy injection is not considered the complete series. Vaccine products, laws, health status, prior records, and local risk can alter the plan. Never attempt to vaccinate a sick puppy or self-administer a product without veterinary direction.
Protecting a puppy before the vaccine series is complete
A puppy is not fully protected immediately after the first injection. Until the primary series is complete and your veterinarian confirms the plan, avoid high-risk places where many dogs gather, including dog parks, daycare, boarding facilities, unknown-dog play areas, and heavily trafficked pet-store floors. Ask your veterinarian how to balance safe socialization with exposure control; the goal is not necessarily to isolate a puppy from every healthy, known, vaccinated dog.
Quick Recap
- Keep vaccination records and bring them to every appointment.
- Choose contact with healthy dogs whose vaccination status is known, only when your veterinarian considers it appropriate.
- Do not allow a puppy to share water bowls, toys, or bedding with dogs of unknown health status.
- Call promptly after any suspected exposure, even if the puppy looks well.
What to do after a possible exposure
- Separate the exposed dog from other dogs and call your veterinarian for a risk assessment.
- Write down the date, location, animals involved, vaccination history, and any signs that develop.
- Ask whether the exposed dog needs an examination, testing, a vaccine update, or a monitoring period. Do not make timing decisions from a generic internet schedule.
- Clean shared surfaces, bowls, crates, vehicles, and clothing according to product-label directions.
- Monitor appetite, temperature if your veterinarian has shown you how, breathing, stool, discharge, energy, gait, and any twitching or seizures. Report changes immediately.
Key points for owners
- Distemper is a serious, highly contagious viral disease; symptoms cannot confirm it at home.
- Neurologic signs may be delayed, even after apparent improvement.
- Isolation protects other dogs, and shedding duration varies enough that your veterinarian must decide when it ends.
- There is no established routine cure; supportive veterinary treatment and nursing address dehydration, nutrition, secondary infections, seizures, and other complications.
- Core vaccination on the veterinarian’s schedule is the most reliable prevention.
