The right DIY cat tree depends on where it will stand, how your cat climbs, and whether the household needs open perches, a hideaway, scratching surfaces, or several resting spots. The eleven ideas below adapt dimensions and features described in published plans; they are examples, not tested or engineered designs. Choose a site and route first, then size the structure to suit both.

How to choose a DIY cat tree plan

Compare plans by footprint and height, the effort needed to reach the top, the number and spacing of resting places, scratching surfaces, and whether the layout is open or enclosed. For more than one cat, consider whether there are enough separate places to rest without forcing every cat to use the same perch. The published examples below do not include comparative test results or universal dimensions.

  • Measure the site first. Check the available floor area and ceiling clearance, and decide whether the tree should sit near a window or against a wall.
  • Match the route to your cat. Staggered platforms, ramps, steps, and branch-like supports create different ways to climb. Consider age and mobility when choosing step spacing.
  • Choose the kind of space. Open platforms offer exposed resting spots; a cubby, house, or fort adds an enclosed option.
  • Plan for scratching and upkeep. Sisal rope and carpet are common choices in these plans. Both may need replacing when badly worn or frayed.

11 DIY cat tree ideas

CatTreePlans.com describes ten tree designs and two bonus scratchers. The ideas below draw on its ten tree examples, with one additional low, wide concept identified as an editorial adaptation. Measurements are the catalog publisher’s examples, not independently tested recommendations.

1. A 43-inch tree with a sisal ramp

The catalog example has a 24 × 24-inch base and a ramp wrapped in sisal. It combines a modest-height climb with a built-in scratching route. Check that the ramp angle and surface suit your cat’s access needs.

3. A 43-inch tree with branch-like access

In this design, branch-like supports lead to a perch. It may suit a cat that enjoys climbing between levels rather than using one straight ramp. Consider the route’s reach and stability when adapting the layout.

11. A low, wide platform-and-scratcher arrangement

This is an editorial concept, not one of the catalog’s plans: arrange a broad, low platform beside a scratching support to keep the climb modest and the layout compact. The sources support adapting steps for a cat’s age and mobility, but do not validate this particular design. Set its dimensions to the site and cat rather than treating it as a tested pattern.

Materials and tools to plan for

Material lists vary by design. Common options in the cited plans include plywood or dimensional lumber, screws or nails, glue, carpet or carpet squares, and sisal rope. Home Depot also describes PVC or heavy cardboard tubes as support options. These are examples, not universal requirements or endorsements of a particular finish.

  • Structure: Choose supports and platforms appropriate to the plan. Home Depot describes plywood platforms and a stable base larger than the platform; a 24-inch-square base is one example in its guide, not a rule for every tree.
  • Fastening: Depending on the design, plans may call for screws or nails and wood glue. Keep fasteners and staples from protruding where a cat could touch them.
  • Surface: Carpet, carpet squares, and sisal rope appear in the cited projects. Plan to replace carpet or rope when badly frayed.
  • Tools: Requirements differ. Dremel’s project lists a drill, cutting and sanding tools, and clamps, along with one 4 × 8-foot sheet of 3/4-inch sanded plywood, wood screws, and adhesive-backed carpet squares. That list applies to its project, not all builds.

Build and place it with stability in mind

Home Depot’s DIY cat tree guide advises making the base broad and heavy enough to resist tipping and gives 24 inches square as one example. The appropriate dimensions depend on the design and site; the cited guides do not provide universal load ratings or certify a particular structure as safe.

  1. Choose the location and dimensions. Measure the footprint and height available before cutting materials. Account for the route between levels and the cat’s age and mobility.
  2. Make the base and supports work together. Follow the chosen plan’s construction details, keeping the base stable and the support securely fastened to the platforms.
  3. Finish contact surfaces carefully. Do not leave staples, screws, or nails protruding. Allow glue, paint, stain, or sealer to dry completely before the cat uses the structure; Dremel specifically gives this direction for its project.
  4. Secure wall-mounted designs to studs. Home Depot recommends brackets suited to the combined load and anchored into wall studs; its guide warns that sheetrock alone is not strong enough for the load.
  5. Inspect and maintain the tree. Replace scratching material when badly frayed and check that fasteners and surfaces remain in good condition.

Dremel also advises reading tool manuals, wearing eye and respiratory protection, and clamping workpieces when practical. Follow the instructions for the tools and materials used in your build.
