A veterinarian confirms the condition with evidence of persistently high blood sugar and builds an individual care plan, often involving insulin, diet, weight management, and monitoring. Some cats enter remission, but diabetes can return.
What causes diabetes in cats?
Diabetes mellitus develops when the body does not make enough insulin, does not respond to insulin effectively, or both. Most feline diabetes resembles type 2 diabetes in people: insulin resistance and inadequate insulin production can occur together. It is not usually possible to identify one single cause in an individual cat.
Obesity is an important modifiable risk factor. Other factors associated with increased risk include older age, inactivity, being male, glucocorticoid treatment, and certain concurrent diseases or medications that increase insulin resistance. These are risk factors, not proof that any one food or owner decision caused the disease. Cornell Feline Health Center’s overview of feline diabetes describes these factors.
What are the signs of diabetes in cats?
The classic signs are drinking more water and urinating more often, along with losing weight despite eating well. Some cats also have an increased appetite. Lethargy or reduced activity may occur, but these signs are nonspecific. Other illnesses can cause similar changes, so symptoms alone cannot confirm diabetes.

- Noticeably increased thirst or water-bowl use
- More frequent urination or larger amounts in the litter box
- Weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite
- Sometimes, lower energy or activity
Arrange a veterinary assessment if you notice these changes, especially if they persist or worsen. A veterinarian can investigate diabetes and other possible causes.
How do veterinarians diagnose feline diabetes?
Diagnosis depends on compatible signs and evidence that blood sugar has remained high—not just one elevated reading. Cats can develop temporary stress-related high blood sugar during a clinic visit, so a single result may be misleading. Veterinarians may repeat blood and urine tests, use measurements taken under less stressful conditions, and check fructosamine, which estimates average blood sugar over roughly two weeks. Additional tests can help identify concurrent illness.

How is diabetes in cats treated?
Treatment is tailored to the cat’s health, blood sugar control, and nutritional needs. Goals include easing signs, improving glycemic control and quality of life, and avoiding hypoglycemia. Insulin remains a traditional mainstay; the insulin type and monitoring plan are selected with the veterinarian. Never change, skip, or stop insulin based on a reading or a change in symptoms without veterinary direction.

Insulin and monitoring
Monitoring helps the veterinary team assess how the cat is responding and whether the plan needs adjustment. The appropriate approach varies by cat and may involve clinical signs, blood or urine testing, and other measurements selected by the veterinarian. The 2026 AAHA insulin treatment and monitoring guideline describes individualized management; medication selection and dosing are veterinary decisions.
Food and weight management
Diet is part of diabetes care, but there is no single food that is right for every cat. AAHA discusses high-protein, low-carbohydrate approaches, while Cornell notes the use of low-carbohydrate feeding and continued follow-up after remission. A veterinarian should help choose food and set a safe rate of weight change, particularly if another illness affects what or how much a cat should eat. A product labeled for diabetes is not automatically suitable for every patient. See the 2026 AAHA dietary management guideline.

Are oral diabetes medicines an alternative to insulin?
Bexacat (bexagliflozin) and Senvelgo (velagliflozin) are SGLT2 inhibitor medicines, not forms of insulin. They lower blood sugar by increasing the amount of glucose excreted in urine. FDA guidance restricts their use to carefully selected cats and warns that they are not for cats previously treated with insulin or cats with insulin-dependent diabetes. Screening and ongoing veterinary monitoring are essential.
These medicines carry a risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), including euglycemic DKA, which can occur without high blood sugar. Vomiting, weakness, lethargy, dehydration, weight loss, or loss of appetite in a cat taking either drug warrants immediate veterinary contact and assessment. A normal glucose reading does not rule out euglycemic DKA. The FDA provides safety information for Senvelgo, Bexacat, and the two drugs’ eligibility and risks.

Can a cat with diabetes go into remission?
Yes. The 2026 AAHA task force supports an average remission rate of approximately 30% in the United States. That is a guideline-supported average, not an individual cat’s predicted chance. AAHA defines remission as blood sugar in the normal range for more than four weeks without insulin or oral hypoglycemic medicines.
Remission is not a cure: a cat’s insulin reserve may remain limited, and diabetes can return. Continued monitoring and dietary management matter even after medicines are no longer needed. Cornell also cautions that cats may relapse and need follow-up.
