Brown is a coat-color trait, not a breed, and the available sources do not show that brown pigment determines a cat’s personality or health. Breed profiles can describe tendencies and breed-specific health concerns, but neither predicts exactly how an individual cat will behave or what condition it will develop.
Does a brown coat tell you what breed a cat is?
No. A brown appearance cannot establish a cat’s breed or pedigree. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory explains that brown coat variants affect black pigment, while the cat’s visible coloring also reflects interactions among genes. Chocolate and cinnamon are among the brown variants it describes.

A coat-color genetic test can identify relevant color variants; it is not a general health screen and does not prove a cat’s breed. For lineage, documented pedigree is more informative than coat shade.
Does brown coat color affect temperament?
The sources do not establish a temperament effect caused by brown pigment. Temperament descriptions apply to breeds, not to every cat with a particular coat color.
#1 Best Overall
Havana Brown
TICA describes the Havana as people-oriented, playful, gentle, and curious. The Canadian Cat Association’s 2025 breed standard describes intelligence and a desire for human companionship. These are breed-profile and standard descriptions, not guarantees about an individual cat. Zoetis likewise cautions that behavior varies with training, socialization, and healthcare.
What matters when judging an individual cat
Pay attention to the cat’s observed behavior, history, and experience rather than inferring personality from color. A breed profile can offer context, but it cannot tell you whether a particular cat will be outgoing, playful, or comfortable with people.

Are brown cats more prone to health problems?
The cited sources do not show that brown pigment causes disease or that brown cats as a group have greater health risks. They do describe concerns associated with particular breeds. Those breed-level concerns should not be recast as risks caused by coat shade or as a diagnosis for any one cat.

Havana Brown
TICA calls the Havana relatively healthy and recommends routine preventive care, including vaccinations, parasite treatment, and veterinary appointments. This is a breed-level overview, not a guarantee that an individual Havana will avoid illness.
Rank #3
Burmese
TICA identifies hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) as a concern in Burmese cats and recommends echocardiographic screening by a veterinary cardiologist for breeding animals. This is a breed-specific concern; the source does not attribute it to a Burmese cat’s dark brown, or sable, coat.

Breed names can depend on region and registry. TICA distinguishes the North American Havana Brown from British usage, where “Havana” may refer to a brown Oriental Shorthair variety. Those names do not necessarily describe the same breed or type, so check the registry and location when comparing breed information.

How to use breed and color information responsibly
- For color: treat brown, chocolate, and cinnamon as descriptions of coat appearance, not proof of breed.
- For temperament: use breed profiles as broad tendencies and assess the individual cat on its own behavior and history.
- For health: ask a veterinarian about the individual cat and any relevant breed history; do not assume a risk from brown pigment.
- For a breed name: confirm the registry and regional meaning, especially when the name is Havana.
