Before your kitten arrives, remove small swallowable objects, secure chemicals and cords, identify toxic plants, and prepare one quiet starter room. Inspect the home from floor level, then repeat the check as your kitten gets more mobile. No gate, lock, or other product guarantees safety, so supervise and adapt the setup to your individual kitten.
Start with a kitten-level safety check
Get down near the floor and look under furniture, along walls, and in corners. Kittens investigate with their mouths, and small objects can be swallowed or become choking hazards.

- Pick up hair ties, rubber bands, coins, small toys, plastic pieces, and other loose objects.
- Check beneath sofas and appliances, where items can roll or be pushed out of sight.
- As your kitten grows more mobile, recheck counters and tables. Placing something high up may not keep it out of reach.
Identify plants and remove toxic ones
Identify every houseplant before the kitten comes home. Remove poisonous plants or keep them somewhere the kitten genuinely cannot access; a high shelf may not remain out of reach as the kitten climbs.
Lilies in the Lilium and Hemerocallis groups are a particularly serious feline hazard. ASPCA warns that any part of these plants, including pollen, may cause life-threatening kidney injury in cats. Common names can be ambiguous, so verify the plant’s identity rather than relying on its label or appearance. See the ASPCA’s feline hazard guidance.

Secure cords and windows
- Bind, shorten, or otherwise keep electrical cords, blind cords, curtain pulls, and long strings out of reach.
- Check that any window you open has a secure screen. An open window is not safe just because it is above ground level.
Lock away household hazards
Keep medications, supplements, cleaners, laundry products, pesticides, and rodenticides enclosed and inaccessible. Use child-proof cabinet locks if your kitten can open or climb into cabinets. Keep products in their original containers and follow their labels; keep the kitten away during use and until treated areas are safe according to the label. Cover or relocate garbage.
Do not assume a “pet-resistant” bait station is pet-proof. ASPCA Poison Control’s 2025 figures show why everyday hazards merit attention: it received calls about more than 376,000 items pets were exposed to, with over-the-counter medications and supplements accounting for 16.9% of reported exposures, plants and fungi 7.5%, rodenticides 6.5%, household products 6.4%, and insecticides 3.8%. These are shares of exposure calls across pets, not kitten-specific rates or estimates of risk to an individual animal. Details appear in the ASPCA’s 2025 toxin report.

Prevent hiding and entrapment
Close cabinet doors and restrict access to rooms with hazards using a closed door or a gate that works for your kitten. Check dryers, laundry baskets, drawers, and other warm or enclosed spaces before closing or operating them.

Keep adult access practical, and consider whether the kitten can climb around or defeat the barrier. These are fit and usability checks, not evidence that a particular model is safest.

Prepare a quiet starter room
Set up a calm home-base room before arrival with food, water, a litter box, toys, and a scratching post. Let the kitten settle there, then allow gradual access to additional rooms. ASPCA also recommends gradual adjustment in its moving guidance.

If you think your kitten has contacted or swallowed a hazardous substance, promptly contact a veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital, or poison-control service for case-specific guidance—even if the kitten appears well. Take the product label or packaging if available. For difficulty breathing, seizures, unconsciousness, or significant bleeding, seek immediate veterinary hospital care.
