Their eyes continually produce tears to lubricate and protect the surface. If tears overflow and make your cat’s face wet, that is an eye symptom called epiphora, not proof that the cat is grieving or crying from sadness.
Watery eyes can occur with irritation, infection, injury, a foreign object, eyelid problems, blocked drainage, or facial anatomy. Because the same visible sign can have several causes, a veterinarian must assess persistent or unusual watering.

What tears do in a cat’s eyes
A healthy cat’s tear film keeps the eye surface lubricated, helps protect it, and is normally drained away through the tear ducts. You may occasionally notice a small amount of moisture, especially after sleep or exposure to an irritant. That normal lubrication is different from tears overflowing onto the face.

Cats Protection states that “Cats don’t cry tears as an emotional response to sadness like we do.” A wet cheek therefore cannot tell you that a cat feels sad. Cats communicate distress and other emotions through behavior and body language; meowing or yowling may increase, but vocalization can also have medical or behavioral causes and is not a diagnosis of sadness.

The important distinction is between tear production inside the eye and visible overflow outside it. Overflow means something is causing more tears to be produced, preventing normal drainage, or both.
Why are my cat’s eyes watering?
VCA Animal Hospitals describes epiphora as overflow of tears from the eye. It is a symptom rather than a disease, so the appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Possible explanations include the following.
Conjunctivitis or another infection
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the tissues around the eye. Cornell’s Feline Health Center lists watery or thicker discharge, squinting, frequent blinking, and redness or swelling among possible signs. Irritants and infections can both cause conjunctivitis. A watery eye does not establish which one is present, and discharge that becomes thick or changes color should not be interpreted without an examination.
Irritation, injury, or a foreign object
Dust, debris, or another foreign body can irritate the eye and trigger extra tear production. An injury may do the same. Squinting, repeated blinking, rubbing, or suddenly increased watering can accompany an irritated or injured eye. Do not try to remove a suspected object or treat an injury with a household product; manipulation can worsen damage.

Eyelid or eyelash problems
An eyelid that does not sit normally against the eye can interfere with the tear film or cause friction. Hair near the eye may also contact the surface or obstruct the normal flow of tears. These problems require an examination to determine whether the eyelid, surrounding hair, or another structure is responsible.
Blocked or poorly draining tear ducts
Tears can overflow when drainage is impaired. VCA notes that facial anatomy, hair around the eye, debris, or a foreign body may affect drainage. A flat-faced cat may be more prone to drainage challenges because of its facial structure, but appearance alone cannot establish the cause in an individual cat.
More than one cause at once
Infection, irritation, an eyelid abnormality, and impaired drainage can produce similar outward signs. That is why treating the visible moisture as if it proves one particular problem is risky. The veterinarian’s job is to distinguish the possible causes rather than assume that every watery eye is conjunctivitis or that every tear stain is harmless.

Is my cat crying, or does it have an eye problem?
Look at the eyes, not just the wet fur. Cornell says healthy eyes are bright and clear, with little or no tearing. A change from your cat’s normal appearance is more informative than the presence of a single tear.

- CHAMOMILE-INFUSED FOR COMFORT: Formulated with chamomile extract for gentle cleaning around the eye area, helping to remove discharge and address odor for a fresh, comfortable clean
- Usually less concerning: brief moisture that resolves and leaves the eye bright, clear, and comfortable-looking.
- Needs veterinary attention: ongoing or increasing watering, discharge, squinting, frequent blinking, redness, swelling, a cloudy appearance, sores or scabs around the eye, or increased face grooming.
- Especially important: any sudden or unusual change, even if the discharge is clear. A clear discharge can still accompany irritation or a drainage problem.
These observations help describe the problem; they do not diagnose it. Compare both eyes, note when the change began, and tell the veterinarian whether the sign is intermittent or constant. Avoid deciding that a cat is “just crying” because the eye looks wet.
Can pain make a cat’s eyes water?
An eye problem that is painful or irritating can produce watering, but tears alone cannot show that a cat is in pain. The same overflow may result from a blocked duct, facial anatomy, hair, debris, infection, or another non-painful process. Conversely, a cat can have a significant eye problem without dramatic tearing.
Squinting, frequent blinking, redness, swelling, cloudiness, discharge, or increased face grooming are more useful reasons to arrange an examination than the emotional interpretation of tears. Increased meowing or yowling also deserves context: Cats Protection notes that vocal changes may have medical or behavioral causes, so they should not be used by themselves to label the cat’s mood.
If watering and behavioral changes appear together, report both. The combination may help the veterinarian decide how promptly to examine the eyes and what other causes to consider, but it still does not prove that emotional sadness caused the tears.

When should you contact a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian when watering is increased, persists, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by any unusual eye change. Cornell and Cats Protection specifically advise prompt assessment for the following:
- Watery eyes that are new, worsening, or not settling
- Thin or thick discharge
- Squinting or frequent blinking
- Redness or swelling
- A cloudy or otherwise altered appearance
- Sores or scabs around the eye
- More face grooming than usual
- Any other change from the cat’s normal bright, clear eyes
Do not wait for tears to become dramatic before seeking advice. Cats can hide discomfort, and the eye’s appearance can change as a problem develops. When you call, describe whether one or both eyes are affected, the color and consistency of any discharge, and whether the cat is squinting or rubbing the face. If possible, note the timing and any recent exposure to dust, plants, grooming products, or outdoor debris, without placing anything in the eye.
What to do—and what not to do—at home
Do not use an unapproved eye product
VCA warns that some commonly suggested products have not been shown to work and some can harm or injure the eye. An over-the-counter product that helped another animal may be inappropriate for your cat’s condition. Ask a veterinarian before using any product around the eyes.
Never use hydrogen peroxide near the eyes
Hydrogen peroxide can injure delicate eye tissues. It should not be used to remove tear staining or clean the area around a cat’s eye.

Do not treat tear staining as an emotional diagnosis
Stained fur records that tears or discharge reached the face; it does not record sadness, grief, or pain. Cleaning products may mask a change that a veterinarian needs to see, and vigorous rubbing can irritate the skin or eye.
Gather useful observations
Before the appointment, write down when the watering began, whether it is constant, and whether the discharge is watery or thicker. Note squinting, blinking, redness, swelling, cloudiness, sores, scabs, or face grooming. These details are safer and more useful than experimenting with treatments.
How a veterinarian identifies the cause
Because epiphora is a symptom with several possible explanations, an eye examination is needed to identify the cause. The veterinarian will consider the eye’s appearance, the discharge, the eyelids and surrounding hair, the drainage pathway, and the cat’s facial anatomy. They may also ask about recent irritation, injury, or other changes in behavior.

Key takeaway for cat owners
Cats produce tears to protect and lubricate their eyes, not to express sadness as humans do. Visible watering is called epiphora and can reflect excess production, impaired drainage, or several different eye conditions. It does not prove that a cat is sad, and it cannot by itself prove pain.
Watch for changes from bright, clear eyes—especially discharge, squinting, frequent blinking, redness, swelling, cloudiness, sores, scabs, or increased face grooming—and contact a veterinarian when they occur. Avoid hydrogen peroxide and unapproved eye products, because an attempted home treatment can injure the eye or delay the right diagnosis.
