Cats clearly enter rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the stage closely associated with human dreaming. That makes it likely that cats have some form of dream experience, yet REM brain activity and sleep movements cannot reveal a cat’s private thoughts or dream scenes.
Cats Protection summarizes the evidence cautiously: “There’s very little direct evidence on whether cats dream, and much of what we think we know comes from studies of feline sleep patterns and comparisons with other mammals.” The best-supported answer is therefore: cats probably dream, but no study has established what they dream about.

What is known about feline dreaming
Dreaming is a subjective experience. A person can report a dream after waking; a cat cannot describe one. Researchers must therefore infer dreaming from measurable features such as brain activity, eye movements and body behavior during sleep. Those observations are informative, but they are not a direct window into a cat’s mind.
The firm finding is that cats cycle through non-REM and REM sleep. During REM, brain activity increases and characteristic movements may occur. In humans, REM is strongly associated with vivid dreams. Because cats share this sleep stage, scientists infer that they probably experience some form of dreaming. REM alone, however, is not proof that any animal is consciously dreaming at that moment.

No named statistic establishes the likelihood that an individual cat dreams, and no published measurement in the available evidence identifies the content of a cat’s dreams. Claims that a cat is definitely dreaming about a mouse, a favorite toy or a familiar person go beyond what feline sleep studies can show.
How cats sleep: non-REM, REM and daily patterns
Two recurring sleep states
Cat sleep includes non-REM periods and REM periods. Non-REM sleep is generally quieter. REM sleep involves increased brain activity and can be accompanied by eye movements, muscle twitches and small vocalizations. The alternation between these states is the physiological basis for comparing feline sleep with sleep in other mammals.
How many hours a cat sleeps
Cats Protection’s 2026 explainer gives a broad estimate of around 16 hours of sleep per day for most adult cats. It is not a universal target: some cats sleep longer, and feline sleep is usually divided into shorter bouts rather than one continuous, human-like stretch. A single day’s total can therefore vary without indicating a problem.

What the research evidence can—and cannot—show
| Evidence type | What it supports | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Observed REM sleep | Cats have a sleep state with increased brain activity that resembles a stage associated with dreaming in humans. | It does not prove a subjective dream is occurring or reveal a dream’s storyline. |
| Eye movements and body movements during REM | Some movements are associated with orienting or generalized motor activity during sleep. | They cannot be translated reliably into particular images, memories or emotions. |
| Experimental brain-lesion studies | They can illuminate neural mechanisms that permit complex behavior during REM sleep. | Behavior released by a lesion is not a report of ordinary dream content in a healthy cat. |
| Owner observations of twitching or sounds | They are compatible with nervous-system activity during sleep and are often normal. | They do not identify what the cat is dreaming about. |
This distinction between observable behavior and private experience is essential. A moving paw is a real, measurable event; interpreting it as a chase scene is an unverified story added by the observer.
Why a sleeping cat may twitch, move or vocalize
During REM sleep, an owner may see whiskers twitch, ears flick, paws or legs move, eyes shift beneath closed lids or hear a quiet meow. Cats Protection describes small twitches as usually normal. These signs are consistent with activity in the sleeping nervous system, but they do not disclose dream content.
Movements can be brief and isolated or occur in a short burst. Neither pattern lets an owner determine whether the cat is dreaming, what emotion it might be experiencing or whether a particular person or animal appears in the dream. The same visible twitch could accompany many different internal states—or no reportable dream at all.

What the classic cat studies actually found
The 1992 eye-movement and behavior study
A 1992 study examined eye movements and oneiric behavior in cats during paradoxical sleep, a term commonly used for REM sleep. Most isolated rapid eye movements were related to orienting behavior, while most bursts of eye movements were associated with generalized body movements. The authors proposed that some REMs might be dream-related and others might not be.
This result helps explain why an eye movement cannot be used as a simple dream decoder. It is evidence about sleep behavior under observation, not a method for reading the content of an ordinary cat’s dream.
The 1993 pontine-lesion review
Adrian A. Morrison’s 1993 review discussed elaborate behaviors released during REM sleep after bilateral thermal lesions in the feline pontine tegmentum. Such experiments can help researchers investigate the neural circuitry that normally restrains or organizes movement during REM sleep.
Morrison’s abstract states: “This phenomenon may aid in understanding the neurophysiology underlying human dreams but offers little to the unravelling of their cognitive aspects.” In practical terms, the work can inform scientists about mechanisms related to dreaming without showing the mental scenes, memories or meanings of a healthy cat’s dreams.

How later summaries should be read
A veterinarian-authored overview published in 2024 recounts Michel Jouvet’s lesion research and notes that the specifics of cats’ dreams remain unknown. Suggestions that cats may dream about daily activities are plausible interpretations based on what cats do when awake, not established findings demonstrated by those experiments.
What might cats dream about?
There is no scientific evidence in the available feline research that identifies dream subjects. Hunting, climbing, playing, eating or interacting with familiar people are reasonable human guesses because these activities matter in a cat’s waking life. They remain speculation, not conclusions from a sleep recording.
Even if a paw moves as though it is running, the movement does not prove the cat is chasing prey. REM motor activity can occur without a one-to-one correspondence between a body part and a dream image. A quiet chirp does not prove that a bird appears in the dream, either.
Do indoor and outdoor cats dream differently?
No established study in the available evidence shows that indoor and outdoor cats have different dream content or different kinds of dreams. Their waking experiences may differ, but scientists have not demonstrated that those differences produce measurable differences in subjective dreaming. It is therefore inaccurate to tell an owner that an outdoor cat dreams about hunting while an indoor cat dreams about toys as a confirmed fact.

Should you wake a cat that appears to be dreaming?
Cats Protection generally recommends not disturbing a sleeping cat. Most REM twitches are normal, and interrupting a nap is unnecessary when the cat is otherwise well. Let the cat finish sleeping and observe from a safe distance rather than trying to interpret or test the movement.
There is no evidence that an owner can determine a dream’s content by waking the cat, because a cat cannot provide a verbal dream report. If you must rouse a cat for a practical reason, treat the situation as a normal waking rather than as a way to investigate dreaming.
When sleep movements warrant veterinary advice
Contact a veterinarian if movements become intense or prolonged, or if they occur with other concerning symptoms. The important change is not a single tiny whisker twitch but a pattern that looks unusually forceful, lasts longer than the cat’s normal episodes or is accompanied by signs of illness.

- Note any additional signs that concern you, rather than assuming every movement is a dream.
- Do not diagnose epilepsy or a sleep disorder from a video or a single nap; a veterinarian must distinguish normal REM activity from illness.
The 1981 report illustrates why context matters: abnormal REM-related motor activity can resemble a seizure but may have distinguishing features. A professional assessment is the appropriate way to evaluate a worrying episode.
How to observe your cat’s sleep responsibly
- Look for the overall pattern. Brief whisker, ear, paw or eyelid movements during an otherwise peaceful nap are commonly compatible with normal REM sleep.
- Respect the sleep period. Because cats sleep in repeated bouts, a short interruption may simply cut off a normal rest cycle. Cats Protection’s general advice is to avoid disturbing a sleeping cat without a reason.
- Record concerning episodes for a veterinarian. If movement is unusually strong or prolonged, note its duration, what the cat’s body did and whether any other symptoms appeared.
- Keep interpretation separate from observation. Write “front paw flexed for several seconds,” not “cat dreamed about hunting.” The first is an observation; the second is an unverified explanation.
Why the answer remains qualified
Scientists can measure sleep stages and behavior, but they cannot ask a cat to confirm a dream. Comparisons with human REM sleep and with other mammals make feline dreaming likely, yet they do not establish conscious imagery, memory or emotion. The current evidence also does not show whether cat dream content can ever be measured directly.
That limitation does not make the research useless. Sleep-stage recordings, movement analysis and carefully designed neurological studies can reveal how the feline brain controls REM sleep. They simply answer a different question from “What did this cat dream about?”
For owners, the practical conclusion is straightforward: a cat that twitches its whiskers or paws during a normal nap is probably showing ordinary REM-related activity. Cats probably dream in some form, but the dream itself remains private, and no responsible observer can identify its subject from movement alone.
