Curling into a tight ball, seeking a radiator-free sunny spot, or asking to come inside can be normal attempts to conserve heat. Cold becomes dangerous when exposure is prolonged or a cat cannot get dry and warm, especially if the cat is very young, old, ill, or has little hair.
The practical response is to provide a warm indoor retreat, limit exposure during severe weather, and treat weakness, abnormal breathing, confusion, collapse, or unresponsiveness as an emergency rather than trying to warm the cat at home for long.

How cats lose heat
A cat’s coat slows heat loss, but it is not an impenetrable insulation layer. Fur works less effectively when it is wet, matted, or exposed to wind. Body size, age, health, body condition, coat density, and the ability to find shelter all change how quickly an individual cat becomes chilled.
Cats Protection summarizes the basic point in its 7 December 2023 article, “Do cats feel cold?”: “Despite their thick, furry coats, cats can feel the cold like humans and other animals.” A healthy adult cat that curls up or chooses a warm sleeping place while eating, moving, and behaving normally may simply be responding to an uncomfortable temperature. That behavior alone does not diagnose illness.

What temperature is too cold for cats?
There is no single outdoor temperature that is safe for every cat. Cats Protection’s current cold-weather guidance says that staying outside below about 7°C (45°F) can start to become unsafe, particularly for long periods. This is practical guidance, not a guaranteed danger line: a dry, sheltered cat may cope differently from a wet, hairless, sick, or very young cat in wind or freezing precipitation.
| Measurement | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor air | About 7°C (45°F) | Cats Protection’s seasonal-care benchmark at which prolonged outdoor exposure can start to be unsafe; risk varies with the cat and conditions. |
| Normal cat body temperature | 100.0–102.5°F (37.7–39.2°C) | VCA Animal Hospitals’ stated normal range for dogs and cats, measured with an appropriate thermometer. |
| Abnormally low or high body temperature | Below 99°F (37.2°C) or above 104°F (40.0°C) | VCA says readings outside these thresholds require veterinary contact and describes them as emergency situations. These are body-temperature readings, not outdoor temperatures. |
Wind chill, rain, snow, damp bedding, lack of food, and time outdoors can make conditions hazardous sooner than an air-temperature number suggests. Conversely, a cat that can freely enter a dry, heated home has more protection than a cat confined outside. Use the figure as a prompt to reduce exposure, not as permission to leave a vulnerable cat outdoors until the thermometer reaches a particular number.

- Kittens: young cats lose heat quickly and may not regulate body temperature as effectively as adults.
- Older cats: age-related changes, arthritis, reduced muscle mass, or other conditions can make it harder to seek shelter or generate heat.
- Unwell or recovering cats: illness, pain, low body condition, and some medications can impair normal temperature regulation.
- Hairless or sparsely coated cats: they have less insulation and may need a consistently warm indoor environment.
- Wet, underweight, or poorly sheltered cats: moisture and wind strip heat rapidly, regardless of coat length.
For these cats, keeping them indoors during cold spells is usually safer than relying on an outdoor shelter. Ask your veterinarian for individual advice if a cat has a chronic disease, is recovering from surgery, or repeatedly seems unable to stay warm.
How to tell ordinary chill from a medical emergency
Signs that may mean a cat is simply chilly
A cat that is otherwise alert may curl tightly, tuck its paws under its body, move to a sunny or covered location, sleep more, or seek contact with people and other animals. Offer warmth and observe. Normal appetite, comfortable movement, normal breathing, and a return to usual behavior after warming are reassuring, although they do not replace veterinary advice if the behavior persists.
Signs that need urgent veterinary attention
Shivering, cold ears or paws, and tiredness can be concerning when they occur with prolonged cold exposure or a change from the cat’s normal behavior. Seek urgent veterinary help if you see:

- pale or bluish gums;
- confusion, unusual unresponsiveness, or collapse;

These signs can have causes other than cold, so do not wait for a perfect checklist before calling. A cat that is collapsing, not responding, or breathing abnormally should go to an emergency veterinary service immediately. Do not delay transport to take a temperature.

What to do when a cat is cold but alert
- Move the cat to a warm, dry indoor area. Close drafts and let the cat settle without forcing it to lie in a particular position.
- Remove wet bedding and dry wet fur. Pat gently with a towel; avoid vigorous rubbing if the cat is painful or weak.
- Provide a choice of resting places. A warm cat bed, folded blanket, or other draft-free spot lets the cat regulate its distance from warmth.
- Keep access available. Outdoor cats should be able to return indoors. During severe weather, keep them inside, and consider indoor nights during cold spells. Check that a cat flap is not blocked by ice or snow.
- Monitor behavior. If the cat does not become more comfortable, develops any warning sign, or has a medical condition that increases risk, contact a veterinarian.
Blue Cross winter-care guidance also describes an optional pet-safe microwavable heat pad placed under a cozy blanket for ordinary comfort. Use any warming product exactly as its instructions specify, supervise the cat, check the surface regularly, and ensure the cat can move away. A washable bed should be stable, large enough for the cat to turn around, and positioned away from drafts. Comfort products are not treatment for suspected hypothermia.
First aid for suspected hypothermia
Hypothermia means the body is losing heat faster than it can replace it. If a cat has been exposed to cold and is weak, unusually sleepy, uncoordinated, breathing abnormally, confused, collapsed, or unresponsive, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly while beginning gentle first aid.

- Bring the cat indoors immediately. Keep handling calm and minimize movement if the cat is weak.
- Dry the cat if it is wet. Use towels and pat rather than applying force.
- Wrap loosely in a dry towel or blanket. The wrap should retain warmth without restricting breathing or circulation.
- Warm gradually while arranging veterinary care. Call the clinic, describe the exposure and signs, and follow its instructions. Transport the cat as soon as directed.
Do not pour hot water over a cold cat, place it directly on a heating pad, or use a hair dryer. Cats Protection specifically warns against hot water, heating pads, and hair dryers for suspected hypothermia; direct heat can burn skin or cause a dangerous, uneven rise in temperature. VCA likewise recommends warm towels or blankets for a low reading and warns that heating pads can cause burns. Veterinary assessment remains necessary even if the cat appears better.

Freezing conditions can injure ear tips, paws, tail tips, and other exposed tissue. Possible frostbite signs include skin that is pale, grey, or bluish; pain when touched; blisters or ulcers; and skin that later turns black. Tissue may look deceptively normal at first and become more damaged as it warms.

Checking a cat’s body temperature
You cannot reliably diagnose hypothermia by touching ears or paws, and one behavior such as shivering is not a complete test. VCA’s veterinary-authored temperature guide, edited 26 February 2026, explains that technique can affect a reading and that an appropriate thermometer is needed. If a cat is calm and your veterinarian has shown you how to take a reading, record the result and report it to the clinic.
VCA lists 100.0–102.5°F (37.7–39.2°C) as the normal body-temperature range for cats and dogs. It advises contacting a veterinarian for a reading below 99°F (37.2°C) or above 104°F (40.0°C), which it describes as emergency situations. Never force a thermometer into a distressed, aggressive, collapsed, or breathing-compromised cat; seek care instead.
Preventing cold stress through the season
- Keep a warm, dry, draft-free sleeping area available at all times.
- Bring cats indoors during severe weather and avoid leaving vulnerable cats outside unsupervised.
- Make sure outdoor cats can get back inside; inspect cat flaps and entrances after snow or ice.
- Replace damp bedding and dry a cat that comes in wet.
- Watch appetite, movement, breathing, and alertness, not just whether the coat feels cold.
- Arrange a veterinary check for repeated cold intolerance, unexplained lethargy, weight loss, or changes in grooming or appetite.
A cat that chooses a cozy bed on a chilly day is usually expressing a normal comfort preference. A cat that cannot warm itself, acts weak or confused, or develops breathing or gum-color changes needs professional care, regardless of the outdoor temperature.
