Do Cats Feel Embarrassed? Understanding Their Reactions After a Mishap

Cats may look sheepish after a fall or mistake, but no study has shown they feel embarrassment as humans do. Here is what their behavior may mean and how to respond.

We do not know whether cats feel embarrassment as people do. There is no direct evidence establishing that a cat experiences this complex, self-conscious emotion. A cat that looks around after missing a jump, crouches, or leaves the room may be responding to a startle, vulnerability, fear, frustration, or a person’s voice and body language instead.

The honest answer: feline embarrassment has not been demonstrated

Embarrassment is more specific than looking sheepish. In humans, it is usually described as a self-conscious emotion: we recognize that we did something socially awkward and imagine how other people are evaluating us. That requires more than a visible reaction to a mistake or sudden event.

Research on cats’ emotional lives has not established that they experience embarrassment in this human sense. It also has not proved that cats are incapable of any form of self-awareness. The responsible conclusion is narrower: current evidence cannot tell us whether a cat has the private experience people call embarrassment.

That distinction matters because the same outward action can arise from several emotional systems. Looking toward a person after a fall could reflect attention to the room, checking for danger, or reacting to the person’s voice. Running away after knocking something over could be a startle response or anticipation of a human reaction. A single gesture cannot identify an internal emotion.

Why a cat can look “embarrassed” without proving embarrassment

Humans read familiar social signals into animal behavior

People naturally interpret animals through expressions and movements that resemble our own. A lowered body, flattened ears, averted gaze, or quick retreat can look like shame or awkwardness because those movements occur in human social situations too. Cats, however, have a more limited set of visible signals than humans have words and facial expressions. The same posture can carry different meanings depending on what happened immediately beforehand.

Context changes the most plausible explanation

A cat that slips on a windowsill has just experienced an unexpected loss of balance. It may scan the surroundings to locate a threat, regain orientation, or assess whether the surface is safe. A cat that hears a loud crash after knocking over a cup may flee because of the noise itself. If a person laughs, shouts, or moves quickly, the cat may also respond to that human behavior. None of those possibilities requires the cat to be thinking, “Everyone saw my mistake.”

Veterinary behavior specialists therefore treat the setting, timing, body language, and history as more informative than one isolated “sheepish” look. The behavior can be real and meaningful without carrying the human label attached to it.

What might explain common post-mishap reactions?

The following interpretations are possibilities, not diagnoses. They show why the same scene should not be treated as proof of embarrassment.

What the research actually tells us

The 2017 CatFACS study described observable facial behavior, not embarrassment

A 2017 study in Applied Animal Behaviour Science used the Cat Facial Action Coding System (CatFACS) to describe facial actions in shelter cats. Researchers reviewed video from 29 cats, covering 275 clips of four seconds each, and examined how behavior varied with and without human interaction.

The study reported patterns that the authors interpreted as consistent with differing degrees of relaxed engagement, fear, and frustration. Its purpose was to generate hypotheses about facial behavior and possible emotional states. It did not test embarrassment, self-consciousness, or a cat’s understanding of being judged. A post-stumble expression therefore cannot be presented as a finding from this study.

The 2018 veterinary review explains the interpretation problem

A 2018 review in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery examined how feline emotions can be recognized during veterinary consultations through history, body language, and behavior. It emphasizes a basic limitation: a species has a finite behavioral repertoire, and the same behavior can occur with different emotional systems. Inferring motivation from body language alone is consequently difficult.

This is why a careful observer records what happened before the reaction, what the cat did next, and whether the pattern repeats. “The cat looked away” is an observation. “The cat felt embarrassed” is an interpretation that requires evidence beyond that observation.

The 2024 survey measured human attributions, not feline experience

The study Attachment as the Catalyst for the Attribution of Complex Cognition and Emotion to Companion Cats, published in Animals in 2024, asked people what emotions and cognitive abilities they attributed to cats. It included embarrassment or humiliation among its secondary-emotion items.

The participants were 448 university students, including 251 cat owners. Among cat caregivers, stronger attachment was associated with greater attribution of secondary emotions and cognition. The reported association between attachment strength and attribution of secondary emotions was β = 0.200. A factor-analysis component accounted for 40.54% of variance in reported cognition-attribution items.

Those figures describe questionnaire responses. They do not estimate the percentage of cats that experience embarrassment, and they do not show that cats possess the emotion respondents selected. A person who feels closely bonded to a cat may be more willing to describe that cat as having complex feelings; that is evidence about human interpretation.

Does my cat know I am laughing at it?

Your cat may notice that you are making a sound, changing your posture, or looking directly at it. It may also have learned that certain human reactions predict handling, attention, movement, or conflict. That does not establish that the cat understands laughter as a judgment about its performance.

If you laugh softly after a harmless slip and your cat immediately continues exploring, the event may have been insignificant to the cat. If you laugh loudly, move toward the cat, or use an excited tone and the cat retreats, the retreat may reflect sensitivity to those sounds and movements. The practical question is not whether the cat has interpreted the joke; it is whether the interaction leaves the animal relaxed and willing to remain nearby.

How to respond when your cat seems unsettled

  1. Stop escalating the moment. Avoid teasing, chasing, cornering, or repeating the sound that startled the cat. Extra attention can turn a brief surprise into a larger fear event.
  2. Give the cat an easy exit. Let it move to another room, a high perch, or a familiar hiding place without following. Choice and distance help an uncertain cat regain control.
  3. Keep your voice and movements calm. Do not punish a fall, spill, or knocked-over object. Punishment can make the person or location associated with the event feel less safe.
  4. Offer optional cover. A covered bed or a cat tree can provide a place to retreat and observe. These are environmental supports for a fearful or unsettled cat, not treatments for embarrassment.
  5. Wait for the cat to re-engage. A relaxed return to normal exploration, eating, grooming, or resting is more useful information than an attempt to coax the cat out immediately.

Do not force contact to “reassure” a cat that is hiding. Some cats prefer a quiet room and time; others will approach when the person sits still. Respecting that difference reduces the chance that a short-lived startle becomes a lasting association.

Momentary startle or a problem that needs attention?

A brief reaction after an unusual event is different from a persistent change in behavior. Track the pattern rather than assigning an emotion to one episode.

  • Usually brief: the cat startles, scans or retreats, then resumes its ordinary routine once the environment is quiet.
  • Worth monitoring: the cat repeatedly avoids the same room, person, surface, or activity after the event.
  • Seek veterinary advice: hiding, aggression, vocalizing, appetite changes, altered litter-box use, reluctance to jump, or other new signs persist or occur without an obvious trigger.

Behavior alone cannot distinguish fear, pain, frustration, and other causes. A sudden or prolonged change deserves a health assessment rather than a conclusion that the cat is embarrassed.

Common interpretation mistakes to avoid

Do not call a cat ashamed, sorry, or guilty as a fact

Those words describe human moral or self-conscious states. They can be playful captions, but they are not established explanations for a cat’s posture. Use observable language instead: “The cat crouched after the crash,” “The cat avoided the person,” or “The cat relaxed after two minutes.”

Do not treat one viral-looking moment as a scientific test

A short video rarely shows what happened before the reaction, what the person did off camera, or whether the behavior is typical for that cat. Without that context, a confident emotional label goes beyond the evidence.

Do not use owner belief as a prevalence estimate

The 2024 survey can show how attachment relates to what people attribute to cats. It cannot tell us how many cats feel embarrassment, how intense that feeling might be, or whether it differs between individual animals.

What evidence would be needed to answer the question better?

A stronger answer would require more than matching a facial expression to a human emotion. Researchers would need to define the proposed emotion in cat-relevant terms, distinguish it from fear and frustration, and test whether the response is reliable across situations. They would also need behavioral, physiological, and learning measures that converge on the same interpretation, rather than relying only on an observer’s label.

Even then, scientists could study evidence consistent with a state without directly accessing a cat’s private experience. That is why conclusions about complex emotions should remain qualified. The current studies provide useful information about observable facial actions, emotional context, and human attribution, but none directly settles feline embarrassment.

Bottom line

There is no clear evidence that cats feel embarrassment as humans do, and there is no sound basis for declaring that they definitely cannot. A cat’s post-mishap look is better treated as a clue about its immediate context: it may be startled, vulnerable, frightened, frustrated, or reacting to a caregiver. Give the cat space, keep your response gentle, and judge its welfare by sustained behavior rather than by a human label.
