Some cats change weight or body condition in winter, but winter weight gain is not inevitable. Cats that spend substantial time outdoors may need more energy to stay warm, while indoor cats often move less and can gain excess weight if food intake stays high. Do not add or remove food solely because the calendar changed. Instead, track your cat’s weight and body-condition score, account for outdoor exposure and activity, and have your veterinarian guide any meaningful feeding change.
Why a cat’s weight may change with the seasons
Season affects cats indirectly through temperature, activity, daylight, routine and access to food. The important question is not simply “winter or summer?” It is how much cold exposure your cat has, how active the cat is, whether portions and treats changed, and what the weight trend shows over time.

Cold can increase energy needs
A cat uses energy to maintain body temperature. Cornell’s Feline Health Center explains that cats burn more calories to stay warm in winter and says outdoor cats may need a little more food in cold weather to avoid losing weight. Merck Veterinary Manual likewise notes that cats exposed to temperature variation—such as cats outdoors year-round or outside at night—may eat more during winter. This advice concerns appreciable cold exposure, not every cat living in a heated home.
Indoor cats face a different risk
Indoor cats are usually protected from the cold, but they may spend more time resting and less time moving when weather limits play or outdoor access. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says indoor cats are typically less active and more likely to be overweight than outdoor or indoor/outdoor cats. Spaying or neutering, age, life stage, diet, treats and individual metabolism also affect how much food a cat needs.

Seasonal patterns are not universal
A 2025 longitudinal study in Veterinary Record found that female cats had lower body-condition scores and bodyweights in summer and autumn, while male cats’ body condition was more consistent across seasons. That does not prove that winter causes gain. The study was observational, and the available data could not reliably connect seasonal changes with diet, outdoor access or multicat households because owner- and veterinarian-reported information was not matched at the same times. Seasonal effects can therefore differ by cat and by sex.
Outdoor and indoor cats: the practical comparison
| Factor | Cold-exposed outdoor cat | Indoor cat |
|---|---|---|
| Cold exposure | May spend enough time in low temperatures to increase energy use. | Usually protected by indoor heating; cold-weather calorie advice does not automatically apply. |
| Appetite | May eat more in winter as energy needs rise. | Appetite may stay the same even if activity falls. |
| Weight direction | Could lose weight if food and shelter are inadequate; a modest increase in food may sometimes be appropriate. | May gain excess weight when reduced activity is combined with unchanged portions, free feeding or extra treats. |
| What to review | Outdoor hours, wind and precipitation, shelter, access to unfrozen water, measured intake and weight trend. | Play and movement, measured meals, treats, body-condition score, age, neuter status and weight trend. |
| Who should set the portion | A veterinarian, using the cat’s body condition and actual exposure. | A veterinarian, using ideal weight, body condition, life stage and activity. |
The same cat can move between these categories. A cat that normally stays indoors but spends several hours outside at night may have different needs from a cat that only walks briefly onto a sheltered porch.

How to tell whether your cat is at a healthy weight
A scale reading is useful, but it is only one part of the assessment. FDA veterinarian Carmela Stamper has noted, “There’s a good reason why your pet gets weighed at every vet visit,” and recommends discussing weight at every examination. A cat can gain fat without a dramatic change on a household scale, and a sick cat can lose muscle while body weight appears stable.

Use body-condition scoring
Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes five- and nine-point body-condition systems. On the commonly used nine-point scale, 5/9 is an ideal example: the ribs can be felt beneath a slight fat covering, a waist is visible behind the ribs when viewed from above, and abdominal fat is minimal. Scores above or below that midpoint do not automatically define a problem for every individual, so ask your veterinary team to establish the target for your cat.

- Look from above: the body should narrow behind the rib cage rather than form a straight-sided or markedly rounded outline.
- Feel the ribs: you should be able to locate them with light pressure, not press through a thick layer of fat.
- Check the side profile: note the abdominal line and the amount of hanging fat, while remembering that a primordial pouch can be normal and is not, by itself, a measure of obesity.
- Consider muscle as well as fat: your veterinarian can assess whether changes reflect muscle loss, fat gain or both.
Do not judge condition from a single photograph or from how fluffy the coat looks. Long hair can hide a waist, and grooming, posture and camera angle can make the same cat appear different.
Should you feed your cat more in cold weather?
Only when the cat’s actual exposure and condition justify it. Cornell’s recommendation to feed outdoor cats a bit more is intended to help cold-exposed cats avoid weight loss. It is not a blanket instruction for indoor cats. Before changing a portion, review the full daily intake and speak with your veterinarian.

A safe decision process
- Measure the current trend. Record body weight and, with veterinary guidance, body-condition score. Compare with prior records rather than reacting to one reading.
- Describe the winter environment. Note how many hours the cat is outdoors, whether exposure occurs overnight, and whether wind, rain, snow or freezing temperatures limit access to shelter and water.
- Measure everything eaten. Include meals, treats, table food, supplements and food supplied by other household members. Free-choice feeding can conceal a seasonal increase in intake.
- Review activity. Record changes in play, roaming, climbing and mobility. A cat that is less active indoors may not need the same calories as an outdoor cat burning energy in the cold.
- Check age and neuter status. FDA notes that aging and spaying or neutering can affect metabolism, while food requirements vary by life stage.
- Ask the veterinarian for an individualized plan. The plan may involve maintaining portions, making a measured adjustment, changing meal timing or improving activity and enrichment. Do not apply a calorie target from another cat to yours.
- Recheck after the change. Continue recording weight and body condition so the veterinary team can determine whether the adjustment is helping or creating excess gain.
Winter care for cats that go outdoors
Food is only one part of cold-weather care. Cornell recommends keeping cats indoors when possible and protecting outdoor cats from cold, wind and precipitation. Provide a dry, insulated place where the cat can get out of drafts, and check water frequently so it does not freeze. A cat that is wet, shivering, weak or unable to find shelter needs prompt attention rather than simply a larger meal.
Outdoor access can also change during a storm or a prolonged cold spell. If a normally active outdoor cat is confined indoors for several days, activity may fall while the usual portion remains unchanged. Conversely, a cat newly spending nights outside may need more energy. Reassess the situation whenever the routine changes.

Why an apparent winter gain deserves context
A change in body weight may reflect food, activity, fluid, muscle or an underlying health issue. The FDA identifies indoor lifestyle, age, neutering and life stage as factors that influence overweight risk. The 2025 seasonal study also shows why sex and individual pattern matter: its female-cat findings did not apply uniformly to males, and the study could not resolve the effects of diet or outdoor access.
Contact your veterinarian if weight changes are persistent, rapid, unexplained or accompanied by changes in appetite, thirst, urination, stool, grooming, breathing, energy or mobility. A cat that is losing weight despite eating, refusing food, or becoming unusually quiet should not be managed by making an unsupervised seasonal diet change.
A simple winter monitoring routine
| What to record | How it helps | Who reviews it |
|---|---|---|
| Body weight and date | Shows direction over time and provides a record for veterinary visits. | Your veterinary team; FDA recommends discussing weight at each exam. |
| Body-condition score | Detects fat change that a scale alone may miss. | A veterinarian establishes the appropriate target and scoring method. |
| Measured food and treats | Reveals whether intake changed when routines changed. | You and the veterinary team. |
| Outdoor hours and weather | Places energy needs in the context of actual cold exposure. | You report the pattern; the veterinarian interprets it. |
| Activity and mobility | Separates increased energy use from winter inactivity and flags functional changes. | You monitor daily behavior; the veterinarian investigates concerning changes. |
A modestly fitting digital pet scale can help track a trend between appointments, but it is not a diagnostic device and cannot replace veterinary body-condition assessment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding food to every cat in winter: outdoor cold-weather guidance should not be generalized to indoor cats.
- Cutting food after one high reading: confirm the measurement, review treats and obtain a body-condition assessment before restricting intake.
- Using appearance alone: fur, posture and a primordial pouch can mislead; combine weight history with palpation.
- Ignoring activity: a cat that stops roaming or playing may need a different plan even if appetite is unchanged.
- Making a rapid diet change: individualized nutritional assessment is recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), ideally at each examination.
- Assuming a population statistic describes your cat: FDA reports that an Association for Pet Obesity Prevention 2022 survey found 60% of U.S. cats and 59% of dogs were overweight or obese. That is a dated survey figure, not a current diagnosis or a prediction for an individual animal.
What your veterinarian can establish
At an examination, ask for an ideal-weight range, a body-condition target and a feeding plan that accounts for life stage, neuter status, activity, outdoor exposure and treats. Cornell advises veterinary guidance when determining ideal weight and diet, while AAHA’s 2021 nutrition and weight-management guidelines call for ongoing, individualized nutritional assessment. Bring your food labels, measuring method and weight log so the discussion is based on the cat’s actual intake and trend.
The practical goal is not a particular winter number. It is a stable, appropriate body condition with enough energy for the cat’s environment, while avoiding unrecognized excess calories. Reassess whenever temperature, outdoor access, activity, health or household feeding routines change.
