Do Cats Get Embarrassed? What Feline Behaviour Can—and Can’t—Tell You

Science has not shown that cats feel embarrassment as humans do. A cat’s retreat, lowered posture, grooming, or scanning after a mishap may reflect vigilance, fear, stress, or a response to your tone. Here is how to read the context, respond calmly, and recognize when a behaviour change warrants veterinary advice.

We do not know whether cats experience embarrassment in the human sense. Current evidence does not establish that a cat feels self-conscious after a stumble, failed jump, or other awkward-looking event. A lowered body, averted gaze, sudden grooming, or retreat can reflect vigilance, fear, stress, or a reaction to your tone and body language instead. Treat the behaviour as information about your cat’s immediate state—not as proof of shame or embarrassment.

What “embarrassment” means in people

Human embarrassment is more than noticing that something unexpected happened. It usually involves awareness of a social rule, recognition that we have violated or fallen short of it, and concern about how other people now view us. Someone who trips in public may worry that bystanders think less of them. That combination of self-awareness and attention to other people’s judgments is central to the human experience of embarrassment.

It is tempting to apply the same explanation to a cat that misses a jump and then looks around the room. However, seeing a similar posture does not demonstrate that the same mental process is occurring. Behaviour shows what a cat does in a particular context; it does not directly reveal a private emotion. The veterinary behaviourist Alison Gerken, DVM, DACVB, puts the evidence in perspective: “Scientific research on pet emotions is still in its early stages.” Her PetMD article, published March 3, 2025, says it remains unclear whether cats experience complex emotions such as embarrassment.

What research actually establishes about feline embarrassment

No direct study has established that cats experience embarrassment, and there is no reliable statistic for how often it occurs. The responsible conclusion is uncertainty: the evidence does not show that cats feel embarrassed as humans do, but it also does not prove that such an experience is impossible.

  • Top-Tier Dual Interactive Fun: Qraxond's new indoor cat toy has dual motors, controlling random rotation of butterfly and plush tail swing rod accessories, bringing fun, exciting play for kittens and adult cats. Hide-and-Seek: The animal tail-shaped plush hides under the cover cloth, rotating irregularly to appear/disappear, creating a hide-and-seek game. It mimics real prey, bringing unpredictable chases to stimulate the cat's brain and senses. Irregular Rotating Butterfly: The top has an auto-rotating butterfly that rotates, pauses or swings to simulate real flight, keeping the cat engaged. Various interactions ensure the cat gets enough exercise to avoid obesity
  • 3 Adjustable Speed Modes: Customize the excitement with separate buttons for the butterfly and tail. Choose from 3 settings: Steady (Blue Light), Active (Purple Light), and Random (Yellow Light). Suitable for high-energy cats to burn off steam or for calm cats to enjoy gentle play. Keep your feline entertained and prevent boredom, especially when they are home alone
  • Touch-Sensitive Activation: Your Cat's in Control! With smart touch-sensor technology, just tap the device to fire up the fun mode, it will kick off a 5-minute automatic play session instantly. Right after the play session ends, it switches directly to touch-sensitive standby mode, where the purple indicator light flashes every 20 seconds. Simply tap again to reactivate it for another 5-minute cycle. This smart loop ensures your cat gets sufficient exercise and prevents overstimulation
  • Large Rechargeable Battery: Enjoy long-lasting play with the built-in 2500mAh battery. It charges fully in just 2.5 hours via the included USB cable (use a 5V adapter only). The efficient auto on/off cycle extends battery life, making it convenient for busy pet owners while ensuring your cat gets healthy, moderate exercise
  • Realistic Bird Chirping: Elevate the hunt with lifelike sound. The built-in speaker emits authentic bird chirps to attract your cat's attention and stimulate their prey drive. Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves

That distinction matters. Saying “science has not established feline embarrassment” is different from saying “cats cannot feel embarrassment.” The first statement reflects the limits of current evidence. The second makes a claim the available evidence cannot support.

Research does show that people readily project human emotional concepts onto animals. A 2024 peer-reviewed study in Applied Animal Behaviour Science examined owners’ beliefs about cats’ emotions and how they interpreted photographs of cats. In the Dutch owner sample, 1,669 participants (94%) correctly identified the emotion in one fear/anger photograph, but only 416 participants (26%) correctly interpreted all four emotional photographs. Those figures describe human interpretation of selected images; they do not measure whether cats experience embarrassment or any other emotion.

The study’s broader warning is practical: when people mistake an animal’s behaviour for a complex human feeling, they may respond in ways that affect welfare. A photograph or a brief reaction cannot, by itself, prove shame, guilt, remorse, or embarrassment.

Why a cat may look “embarrassed” after a mishap

Several ordinary explanations can produce the behaviour people describe with the word embarrassed. These are plausible interpretations, not measurements of the cat’s inner state.

What you see Possible explanation What to consider
The cat looks around after falling or missing a jump Vigilance after a sudden event A slip can leave a cat briefly vulnerable. Scanning the surroundings may help it check for danger or regain orientation.
The body lowers or the cat freezes Fear, startle, or caution Look at what happened immediately before the posture and whether the cat relaxes once the environment is quiet.
The cat avoids eye contact A response to social pressure, movement, or an intimidating interaction Your approach, voice, and body position may matter more than the original mishap.
The cat suddenly grooms A displacement or settling behaviour after arousal Grooming alone cannot identify embarrassment; note whether the cat was startled or is showing other signs of distress.
The cat runs away or hides A wish to reach safety or avoid an upsetting situation The retreat may follow your reaction, a noise, another animal, or the fall itself.

For example, a cat that slips from a sofa may immediately scan the room because the unexpected movement has made it alert. If its caregiver laughs loudly, leans over it, or sounds annoyed, the cat may move away in response to that body language and tone. Neither sequence requires the cat to be thinking, “Everyone saw me fail.”

How to read the situation without guessing at an emotion

Use the whole episode rather than assigning a label to one facial expression or posture. A short, calm observation can tell you more than an interpretation such as “she feels embarrassed.”

  1. Reconstruct the seconds before the behaviour. Note whether there was a fall, a loud sound, a sudden movement, contact with another animal, or an interaction with you. The trigger may explain the reaction better than the apparent “look” on the cat’s face.
  2. Watch movement and posture together. Is the cat scanning, crouching, freezing, retreating, or returning to normal activity? A single lowered head has little meaning without the rest of the body and the surrounding events.
  3. Check the environment. A busy room, unfamiliar person, barking dog, slippery surface, or blocked escape route can make a cat cautious. A cat that seeks a quiet location may be managing its surroundings rather than reacting to social judgment.
  4. Include your own behaviour. Cats can respond to a caregiver’s voice, facial expression, speed of approach, and body position. If the reaction follows laughter, scolding, or an attempt to pick the cat up, consider whether the interaction—not the original mistake—is now driving the retreat.
  5. Observe recovery. A brief pause followed by normal walking, eating, resting, or play is different from a new pattern of hiding, reluctance to move, or altered routine. Duration and repetition are important context.

What to do immediately

Stay neutral and give the cat control over distance. Do not tease, stage a replay, or scold it for a perceived blunder. A reprimand can add fear or conflict without teaching anything about the original event.

If the cat moves away, let it choose whether and when to return. Keep your voice calm, avoid looming over it, and make a familiar safe place available. PetMD names a covered bed as one optional comfort aid for fearful cats; it is a refuge, not a treatment for embarrassment. Do not force the cat into it or present it as a way to “get over” a social mistake.

Once the immediate moment has passed, restore a predictable routine. Quietly remove an environmental hazard if one contributed to the incident, such as an unstable object or a crowded route. The goal is to reduce fear and injury risk, not to communicate that the cat has done something morally wrong.

When an “embarrassed” reaction may be a health or behaviour concern

A single odd-looking response after a clear mishap is usually best interpreted in its immediate context. A persistent or newly recurring change deserves a different approach. The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ Feline Behavior Guidelines notes that pain or illness can first appear as a change in behaviour. Behaviour history, a physical examination, and diagnostic testing can help distinguish a behavioural issue from a systemic medical condition.

Arrange veterinary advice when the change is persistent, troubling, or accompanied by other signs of illness or distress. Tell the veterinarian what happened before the change, how often it occurs, how long it lasts, and what else has changed in the cat’s routine or physical behaviour. Avoid presenting “embarrassment” as the diagnosis; describe observable events such as repeated hiding after jumping, reluctance to move, altered interactions, or a sustained change in normal habits.

This is especially important when there was a fall or collision. A cat may appear withdrawn because it is frightened, but discomfort can also alter posture and movement. Watching for a pattern and reporting it promptly is safer than assuming the cat is merely self-conscious.

One-off moment versus repeated pattern

Pattern More useful interpretation Practical response
One brief reaction immediately after a slip, followed by normal behaviour A short-lived response to surprise, vulnerability, or the environment is plausible Remain calm, remove hazards, and let the cat recover without teasing or reprimanding.
Reaction follows a caregiver’s raised voice, laughter, or sudden approach The cat may be responding to human body language or tone Reduce social pressure and allow the cat to create distance.
New hiding, altered movement, or repeated reactions without a clear trigger Pain, illness, stress, or a behaviour problem needs consideration Record the pattern and consult a veterinarian if it persists or concerns you.
Similar behaviour in several settings or over an extended period A broad change in welfare or health is more informative than an “embarrassment” label Share the timeline, context, and accompanying changes during a veterinary assessment.

Why owner intuition can be misleading

People are skilled at reading other people’s expressions, so we naturally use familiar emotional labels for pets. That shortcut can make an animal’s behaviour feel immediately understandable, but confidence is not the same as evidence. The 2024 owner-perception study demonstrates how interpretations can diverge even when people view the same cat photographs: most participants in one task identified a single fear/anger image correctly, while far fewer identified all four emotional images correctly.

The lesson is not that owners cannot understand cats. It is that photographs and isolated gestures have limits. A better interpretation combines the cat’s history, the immediate trigger, movement, surroundings, and recovery. It also leaves room for uncertainty instead of turning a guess into a fact.

What scientists can and cannot say today

Scientists can describe observable feline behaviour and investigate how context, learning, health, and human interaction influence it. They can also study how owners interpret emotional expressions. Current evidence, however, does not establish that a cat recognizes a social blunder, imagines other people judging it, and feels embarrassment in the human sense.

That boundary protects cats from two opposite mistakes. Assuming every awkward moment is embarrassment can lead someone to overlook fear, stress, pain, or illness. Declaring that cats are incapable of any complex emotion goes beyond the evidence. The accurate position is narrower: feline embarrassment has not been demonstrated, and a human-looking reaction has multiple possible explanations.

The practical takeaway

When a cat falls, misses a jump, or suddenly grooms and retreats, respond to what you can observe. Keep your voice and movements calm, avoid teasing or punishment, provide space and a safe retreat, and watch whether the cat returns to its normal behaviour. If the change persists, recurs without a clear trigger, or comes with other signs of distress or illness, seek veterinary advice. You do not need to decide whether the cat felt embarrassed in order to give it the help and security it needs.
