Cats can show behavior that looks jealous, but science has not established that they experience jealousy in the human sense. A controlled 2020 study found a limited reaction when an owner petted a realistic toy cat, yet the authors said the result could not prove jealousy. When your cat reacts to a new animal, baby, visitor or change in attention, treat the behavior as information about stress, resources, territory, social relationships or health—not as proof that your cat is keeping score.
What the best controlled study found
The clearest test of feline jealousy-like behavior was published in Pet Behaviour Science in 2020. Bucher, Arahori, Chijiwa, Takagi and Fujita studied 52 cats from Japanese households and cat cafés. Each cat watched either its owner or an unfamiliar experimenter pet one of two objects: a realistic soft-toy cat or a furry cushion.

Household cats, in particular, reacted more intensely toward the toy cat that their owner had petted than toward the comparison object. That pattern suggests that some cats notice when a socially important person directs attention toward something that resembles another animal. However, the cats did not react differently to the two human actors, and the test did not produce the broader collection of behaviors that would normally strengthen a claim about jealousy.
The authors were explicit about the limitation: The absence of other behaviors indicative of jealousy reported in infants and dogs precludes drawing firm conclusions about the existence of jealousy in domestic cats.
The 52-cat sample is a study size, not a percentage of cats that become jealous, and it cannot tell us how common the behavior is in homes with babies, dogs or multiple cats.

Why a jealousy label can mislead
Jealousy is a description of an internal emotion. A hiss, stare or swat is an observable action. From the action alone, nobody can tell whether a cat feels jealousy, fear, frustration, pain, territorial concern or something else. Calling every conflict “jealousy” can delay the response that would actually help.
The 2024 American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) intercat-tension guidelines emphasize that household conflict is often subtle. Their task force uses the word tension because many signs go unnoticed until relationships have deteriorated. A cat may avoid a room, block a doorway, stare at another cat, change sleeping locations or wait to use a litter box before any fight occurs.
The same guidance lists several overlapping causes: competition for food, water, litter boxes, resting places or human attention; changes in social relationships; an unfamiliar animal entering established territory; and pain or illness. Territorial aggression can also occur when a person or animal encroaches on a cat’s perceived territory, as described by Cornell’s feline behavior guidance. These explanations can coexist, so a single dramatic incident does not identify the cause.

- Attention interruption: your cat inserts its body between you and another animal, climbs onto you, vocalizes or paws at you when you touch the other animal.
- Monitoring or blocking: prolonged staring, guarding a doorway, following another cat, or preventing access to food, water, resting spots or litter boxes.
- Overt conflict: hissing, growling, swatting, chasing or repeated fights.
- Avoidance: hiding, retreating from shared rooms, taking a different route through the home or waiting until another cat leaves before eating or toileting.
- Household changes: urine or feces outside the litter box, altered appetite, disrupted sleep or a sudden change in sociability.
None of these signs proves jealousy. They show that the cat’s behavior has changed in a particular context. The change from the individual cat’s normal pattern, its duration and what happens immediately before it are more informative than the label “jealous.”
How to compare the likely explanations
When two explanations seem possible, compare the trigger, setting, behavior and health picture. This framework is a practical way to organize observations; it is not a validated diagnostic test.
| Trigger or situation | What to record | Possible interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| New cat, dog or other animal | Where the resident cat reacts; whether it watches, blocks, hides or attacks | Resource competition, social disruption or territorial intrusion |
| Owner gives attention to someone else | Whether the cat interrupts only petting or also reacts around food, play or seating areas | Attention competition, frustration or a learned demand for interaction |
| Shared resources | Access to litter boxes, food, water, beds, high resting places and escape routes | Competition or blocking between cats |
| Person or animal enters a particular room | Whether the response is limited to one area or occurs throughout the home | Territorial concern |
| Sudden behavior change | Appetite, toileting, movement, grooming, hiding and signs of pain | Medical illness or pain must be considered before a social explanation |
Also note how quickly the behavior began, whether it is becoming more frequent and whether the cat can relax when separated. A short reaction to a single unfamiliar event differs from persistent tension that affects eating, sleep, toileting or movement.
Introducing a new cat without forcing contact
A new cat should not be placed immediately into the resident cat’s full territory. UC Davis recommends a settling-in period in a separate room before introductions. Prepare that room before the newcomer arrives.

1. Set up a complete temporary room
Provide a litter box, food, water, scratching post, bed, toys and an open carrier. The carrier gives the cat a familiar retreat and allows safe movement if the cat must be transported. Keep the door closed so the newcomer can settle without being pursued.
2. Allow the settling-in period
Give the new cat time to eat, drink, use the litter box and rest in the separate room. Keep interactions calm and predictable. Do not interpret a resident cat’s interest at the door as permission for an immediate face-to-face meeting.
3. Proceed in small, controlled stages
Move forward only when both cats can remain calm with the existing barrier. Brief, supervised exposure is safer than forcing prolonged contact. If either cat becomes highly aroused, increase distance and return to the last stage at which both were relaxed.
4. Protect access to essentials
Check that one cat cannot guard the only route to food, water, litter boxes or resting areas. Arrange the home so a cat can leave an encounter rather than being trapped in a corner or hallway.

5. Never let cats “work it out” through a fight
The AAFP guidance warns against forcing cats together or expecting conflict to resolve on its own. Fighting can create lasting fear and make future encounters harder. Separate cats safely and seek professional advice if aggression persists.
6. Measure progress by function
Improvement means both cats can eat, sleep, toilet and move around without persistent blocking or fear. Friendship is not required; peaceful tolerance is a useful outcome.

Use the same principles as a cat introduction: preserve the cat’s safe room and escape routes, prevent chasing and watch for guarding of doorways or resources. A cat that hides continuously or stops using normal resources needs more than reassurance; the environment and introduction pace should be reassessed.

A partner, visitor or returning family member
An adult who receives more attention can alter the cat’s routine without any new animal being present. Observe whether the cat’s response is limited to lap access or whether it also includes hiding, appetite changes, litter-box problems or territorial blocking. Those broader changes call for a health and environment check rather than an assumption that the cat resents the person.
Social preference is not the same as jealousy
The 2024 AAFP guideline summarizes a preference study involving 38 cats. Half preferred a social reward such as petting or play, while 37% preferred food. Those figures describe choices in that study; they are not universal proportions and they do not demonstrate jealousy. They do show why an individual cat’s motivation matters. One cat may seek contact when attention shifts, while another may prefer distance or a food-based reward.
Offer interaction in ways the cat reliably enjoys, but do not use petting to force proximity between animals. Respecting different social preferences can reduce pressure in a crowded household.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen to involve a veterinarian
Arrange a veterinary assessment for a sudden or persistent behavior change, repeated conflict, hiding that does not resolve, appetite or weight changes, altered movement, signs of pain, or elimination outside the litter box. Medical problems can make a cat defensive or less tolerant of another animal, and stress can occur alongside illness.
A veterinarian can examine the cat for physical causes and help decide whether a qualified behavior professional is appropriate. Bring a timeline, short video clips recorded safely from a distance, details of the trigger and a list of changes in eating, drinking, toileting, sleep and mobility. Do not delay care while trying to determine whether the cat is “really jealous.”
Responses that commonly make tension worse
- Do not punish hissing, growling, hiding or swatting. Punishment adds fear and does not remove the trigger.
- Do not force cats to share a bed, carrier, feeding area or room.
- Do not remove a cat’s only retreat to make it interact.
- Do not assume house-soiling or aggression is revenge or deliberate disobedience.
- Do not introduce a newcomer by placing both animals together and waiting for them to settle it themselves.
- Do not use a scratching post or another single item as a treatment for conflict. A scratching post is one useful supply for a newcomer’s separate room, not a cure for tension.
A practical observation checklist
For several days, record the event rather than your interpretation:
- What happened immediately before the behavior?
- Which person, animal, room or resource was involved?
- Did the cat stare, block, flee, hide, vocalize, swat or fight?
- Could the cat reach food, water, litter boxes and a safe resting place?
- Did the behavior occur in one location or throughout the home?
- How long did it last, and did the cat return to normal afterward?
- Were there changes in appetite, toileting, grooming, sleep or movement?
This record helps distinguish a brief attention-seeking episode from a pattern of intercat tension or a possible medical problem. The most accurate conclusion is often not an emotion word but a specific description: for example, “blocks the hallway when the new cat approaches” or “hides and stops eating after visitors arrive.” That description points to safer environmental changes and timely veterinary care.
