Do Cats Have Deep Sleep? EEG Evidence, REM Twitching and What Owners Can Tell

Cats have measurable deep slow-wave sleep, but appearance alone cannot confirm it. Here is how EEG studies distinguish deep sleep from REM, what twitching means, and when a changed sleep pattern warrants veterinary advice.

Yes. Cats experience deep slow-wave sleep, a stage identified by brain recordings rather than by appearance alone. Feline sleep studies distinguish non-REM (NREM) sleep—including light and deep slow-wave stages—from REM sleep.

A motionless cat is not necessarily in deep sleep, and whisker, ear, tail or limb twitching is more consistent with REM than with deep slow-wave sleep. You can support good rest at home, but only EEG and related recordings can reliably identify a cat’s sleep stage.

What “deep sleep” means in a cat

In everyday conversation, “deep sleep” can mean a cat that is difficult to rouse. In sleep science, it has a narrower meaning: a slow-wave stage identified from electrical activity in the brain. Electroencephalography (EEG), often combined with eye-movement and muscle recordings, is used to separate sleep states.

Cat studies identify NREM and REM sleep. Some divide NREM into light slow-wave sleep and deep slow-wave sleep. Deep slow-wave sleep is therefore a measured brain state, not simply a visual impression of a relaxed animal. The scoring categories are not identical in every study: one paper may classify drowsiness separately, while another may group it with wakefulness or subdivide NREM differently. The 2024 Journal of Mammalogy paper discusses these differences in its comparison of feline sleep measurements (Journal of Mammalogy, 2024).

  • Easy Care & Assembly: This cat cube for indoor cats can be quickly assembled or folded flat for easy storage and travel. Portable and lightweight. The removable cushions feature reversible, machine-washable covers that provide all-season comfort.

This distinction matters when you watch your own cat. Closed eyes, stillness or a curled posture can occur during more than one state. They cannot prove that the EEG has entered deep slow-wave sleep.

How feline sleep stages differ

State What recordings show What an owner might notice
Wakefulness and drowsiness Wake activity, with drowsiness scored according to the study’s definitions. Alertness may fluctuate; the cat can respond readily to sounds or touch.
Light slow-wave sleep (NREM) Slow-wave EEG activity is present but less pronounced than in the deep stage. Little movement is possible, but appearance alone cannot identify this stage.
Deep slow-wave sleep (NREM) Stronger slow-wave, including delta-range, EEG activity. The cat may look very still and relaxed, but those signs are not diagnostic without recording.
REM sleep Fast, low-voltage EEG activity, reduced muscle tone and eye movements; brief body or limb jerks may occur. Whiskers, ears, tail or limbs may twitch, and breathing patterns may change.

The contrast between deep NREM and REM is especially important. Deep slow-wave sleep is defined by stronger slow activity in the brain. REM has a more wake-like, fast EEG pattern despite the sleeping cat’s reduced muscle tone. A twitching paw is therefore not evidence that the cat is in deep sleep; it can be a visible feature of REM.

What the key cat studies found

The foundational 1968 recording study

A Brain Research study published in November 1968 recorded 12 adult cats, with two 24-hour recording periods for each cat. Its abstract identifies four states: awake (including drowsiness), REM sleep, light slow-wave sleep and deep slow-wave sleep. In other words, the study used physiological recordings to distinguish two levels of slow-wave sleep rather than relying on posture or how easily a cat appeared to wake.

The paper is the original source for the explicit “deep slow wave sleep” label in cats and remains useful for showing that the stage is a real electrophysiological category. Its laboratory setting and small sample do not establish how many hours every pet cat spends in that stage. The 2024 noninvasive EEG study

A modern Journal of Mammalogy paper used noninvasive EEG in family cats and compared its findings with earlier work. The authors emphasize that sleep-stage labels and recording conditions vary across studies. Their analyzed recording was a short afternoon nap of 30 to 90 minutes, not a continuous day-long record. They specifically caution that such a nap is not straightforward to compare with older 24-hour recordings.

The same paper reports an average daily sleep duration of about 16 hours under baseline laboratory conditions, while noting substantial variation between studies. That figure is a research-context average, not a target for every household cat and not a measurement of the proportion of time spent in deep sleep. The paper is available at Noninvasive EEG measurement of sleep in the family cat and comparison with the dog.

Why the numbers cannot be combined into one household schedule

When studies appear to disagree, check four features before drawing a conclusion:

  • Recording method: EEG or full polygraphy measures physiology; casual observation records appearance.
  • Setting and sample: Laboratory cats and family cats may have different surroundings, routines and levels of acclimation.
  • Recording window: A 30-to-90-minute afternoon nap samples a different slice of sleep from two 24-hour sessions.
  • Scoring definitions: Drowsiness and NREM subdivisions are not labeled identically in all papers.

These differences explain why a published average cannot predict an individual cat’s exact daily pattern or deep-sleep duration.

Can you tell when your cat is in deep sleep?

Not reliably by watching. A cat that is quiet, curled up and slow to respond may be resting deeply, but the same outward picture can occur in light NREM sleep or during a brief period of stillness in another state. Conversely, small movements do not automatically mean the cat is awake.

For home observation, treat behavior as context rather than a diagnosis:

  • Note whether your cat settles voluntarily and returns to normal alertness after waking.
  • Observe the environment: noise, visitors, temperature and other animals can change how often a cat is disturbed.
  • Look for a pattern over several days instead of assigning a stage to one nap.
  • Do not wake a sleeping cat repeatedly just to test responsiveness; uninterrupted rest is preferable.

Only an EEG-based recording can confirm that the brain is showing the slow-wave pattern used to define deep sleep. Consumer cameras, phone videos and ordinary activity trackers may document movement, but the sources reviewed here do not establish that they can diagnose feline sleep stages.

Why does a sleeping cat twitch?

Twitching can occur during REM sleep. Cats Protection veterinary authors Vicky Placzek, RVN, and Katie Smith, RVN, write: “When a cat is in REM sleep, the cat’s whiskers, ears and tail may twitch and breathing patterns change.” The same observation can include brief limb or body jerks. REM is characterized by fast, low-voltage EEG activity, reduced muscle tone and eye movements, so visible twitching should not be mistaken for proof of deep slow-wave sleep.

A video of twitching cannot identify the sleep stage on its own. It can show when the movement happened and whether breathing or posture changed, which may help a veterinarian if the pattern is persistent or accompanied by other behavioral changes. The practical guidance from Cats Protection is to seek veterinary advice when sleep patterns or behavior change, so medical problems can be ruled out (Cats Protection, “Cat naps,” Summer 2014).

How much do cats sleep?

The often-repeated claim that cats sleep roughly 16 hours a day has a specific qualification. The 2024 paper reports an average of about 16 hours under baseline laboratory conditions and points out that estimates vary considerably between studies. It should not be treated as a fixed requirement, a promise that a pet cat will sleep that long, or an indication that a particular number of those hours is deep sleep.

Cats nap intermittently rather than following one uninterrupted block. Age, health, daily activity and living conditions can alter where and when a cat rests. A change from an individual cat’s established pattern is more informative than comparing that cat with an online average.

How to support healthy sleep at home

Provide several suitable resting places

Cats Protection advises offering enough distinct resting locations, especially in multi-cat homes. Separate sites let cats rest without competing for access and allow them to choose a quiet or more exposed position. Place resting options where the cat can reach them easily and where household traffic will not cause constant interruptions.

Allow uninterrupted naps

Let a sleeping cat finish a nap when practical. Avoid moving the cat solely because it is still or because you want to check whether it is in “deep sleep.” A bed, mat or other comfortable surface is an optional resting place; the reviewed sources do not show that any particular product induces deep sleep or changes sleep architecture.

Account for age and changing access

Cats Protection notes that age and conditions can affect resting behavior and access to preferred sites. Make sure older or less mobile cats can reach a quiet, comfortable location without climbing or navigating hazards. This is environmental support, not a way to force a specific EEG stage.

When a sleep change deserves veterinary attention

Sleep duration naturally varies, but a persistent or marked change in sleep pattern, activity or behavior should not be diagnosed from a video or an internet checklist. Cats Protection states that seeking veterinary advice is the first step when sleep patterns or behavior are disrupted or changed. A veterinarian can consider pain, illness, stress and other causes and decide whether examination or further testing is appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep notes on when the change began, how often it occurs, appetite and activity, and whether unusual movements happen only during sleep or also while awake. Those observations give a clinician useful context without claiming to identify a sleep stage at home.

What “deep sleep” does—and does not—tell you

Deep slow-wave sleep is one part of a cat’s normal sleep architecture, alongside light NREM, REM and wakefulness. It is not synonymous with total sleep time, and it is not interchangeable with REM. A cat can twitch during REM while not being in deep slow-wave sleep; a still cat may be in a different state entirely.

The strongest conclusion supported by the available recordings is therefore straightforward: cats have a measurable deep slow-wave stage. The exact amount an individual pet experiences cannot be inferred from posture, twitching or a single short nap, and the reviewed sources do not establish that supplements, medication or consumer sleep products can increase or diagnose it.

Bottom line

Cats do experience deep sleep in the scientific sense of deep slow-wave NREM sleep. EEG studies, including the 1968 24-hour recordings of 12 adult cats and modern noninvasive work, distinguish it from REM. At home, stillness cannot confirm deep sleep, while whisker, ear, tail or limb twitching is compatible with REM. Give your cat accessible, undisturbed resting places and consult a veterinarian if sleep or behavior changes persist.
