Cats have affective states, meaning internal states such as fear, contentment, or frustration, and these states shape how cats behave and how well they are doing. What we cannot do is read those states directly. People and veterinarians infer them from a cat’s face, voice, posture, activity, and surroundings, and that inference is imperfect. The studies discussed here, published between 2018 and 2024, support the idea that cats have emotions while showing that identifying which emotion a cat is feeling at a given moment is harder than most owners assume.
What “emotion” means when scientists study cats
In feline science, “emotion” usually refers to an affective or motivational state that can be inferred from behavior and physiology. It does not mean a cat is narrating a human-style story about what happened to it. A 2018 review in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery by Heath treats emotional motivations as relevant to feline behavior and welfare, and it notes that much of the evidence on emotional motivation in mammals historically came from human research. That means cat-specific claims need direct evidence, and extrapolation from other species has to be stated as extrapolation. Heath (2018), Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery
What people can read from a cat
Facial expressions alone
The most direct test of human skill with cat emotion used video. In a 2019 study published in Animal Welfare, Dawson and colleagues showed 6,329 participants 20 clips each of cats in operationalized positive or negative states. The average participant identified 11.85 of 20 correctly, and 13% scored at least 15 of 20. A two-option guess would average 10 of 20, so the group performed above chance, but the task was carefully structured and the results describe performance on that task, not everyday accuracy among cat owners. The study also considered active and inactive states, which is a useful reminder that a cat’s energy level changes how its face and body look. Dawson et al. (2019), Animal Welfare
Combining visual and vocal signals
A 2024 study by de Mouzon, Di-Stasi, and Leboucher in Applied Animal Behaviour Science asked how well people interpret cats’ communicative cues. Participants understood cats better when they had combined visual and vocal signals than when they had either channel alone. Discontentment behaviors were especially hard to identify, which matters because low-level frustration or unease is easy to miss in a cat that seems calm. The finding supports reading several channels together. It does not show that every state can be decoded accurately by combining cues. de Mouzon, Di-Stasi, and Leboucher (2024), Applied Animal Behaviour Science

How owners’ interpretations can go wrong
Owners are not passive observers. Bouma, Reijgwart, Martens, and Dijkstra surveyed over 1,800 Dutch cat owners and included a photograph task. In their January 2024 paper in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, owners who held more anthropomorphic views, meaning they tended to see their cats in human terms, were more likely to attribute complex social emotions such as jealousy and compassion, and more likely to assign emotions to neutral cat photographs. In the survey, 52% described their relationship with the cat in human terms, such as family member, child, or best friend, and 14% described the cat as a pet animal. Bouma et al. (2024), Applied Animal Behaviour Science
This is an association found in a Dutch online sample, not proof that any particular owner misreads a cat. It also does not establish that cats never experience social or complex feelings. The study points to a narrower risk: a confident story about a cat’s inner life can outrun the evidence in front of you.

Emotion categories used in practice
Veterinary education needs shared language, so a 2021 study by Caeiro and colleagues in Animals developed an ethogram, a structured catalogue of observable behaviors, to help identify feline emotions in practice. It proposes five categories:
- Fear: defensive or avoidant behavior in response to a perceived threat.
- Anger/rage: aggressive or threatening displays.
- Joy/play: active, playful engagement.
- Contentment: relaxed, settled behavior.
- Interest: attentive exploration or focus on something in the environment.
The authors present the guide as a proposal. They identified reliability testing and field testing as necessary next steps, so it should be used as a framework for careful observation rather than a diagnostic tool. Caeiro et al. (2021), Animals

What the evidence does not establish
- There is no complete catalogue of every feline subjective emotion, and no settled answer to how closely any specific cat feeling resembles a human one.
- No single behavior reliably maps to a single emotion. A flattened ear, a tail flick, or a hiding cat can each arise from several states.
- The 2019 facial-cue results describe one structured task; they do not measure how well typical owners read their own cats.
- The 2024 owner findings come from one population, and the 2021 categories are a proposed framework still awaiting full validation.
How to read your cat’s state with the evidence in mind
- Observe several channels at once. Note the face, ears, tail, posture, and vocalizations together rather than fixing on one signal.
- Describe before you label. Write what the cat is doing, such as “crouched, pupils wide, ears back,” before choosing a category like fear or anger.
- Check the context. Recent visitors, a noise, a new litter box location, or a change in routine can explain a state that looks odd out of context.
- Compare with the cat’s own baseline. A change from how your cat normally behaves is often more informative than how it compares with other cats.
- Treat social-emotion labels cautiously. Describing a cat as jealous or guilty tells you about your interpretation more than about the cat’s state.
- Involve a veterinarian when behavior changes persist. Pain and illness can change posture, appetite, grooming, and temperament, and Heath’s review connects emotional motivation to problem behaviors, so a behavior change warrants a medical check before a behavioral explanation is assumed.
Cats do have emotions in the sense that matters for their welfare. The practical skill is not finding a perfect emotional dictionary for your cat, but noticing enough signals, in enough context, to act sensibly on what they show.
