Not in the human sense. Cats have ordinary fur around their eyes, but the longer, stiff hairs that appear above the eyes are usually supraorbital vibrissae—specialized whiskers—not an eyebrow hair line. These whiskers are part of a sensory system that helps a cat detect nearby objects, air movement and contact near the eyes.
That distinction matters for care. A whisker is not just an unusually long strand of fur: its follicle is deeply rooted and richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels. Cutting or pulling it can interfere with information a cat uses at close range, while a small particle touching an above-eye whisker can help trigger a blink or head shake.

Eyebrows and above-eye whiskers are different structures
Human eyebrows form a recognizable band of hair above each eye. Their main roles include helping divert sweat and water and contributing to facial expression. Cats do not have that same, separate eyebrow hair line.

A cat does have short fur on the skin around the eyes, just as it has fur over the rest of the face. It may also have several longer hairs projecting above or to the side of each eye. Those longer hairs are called supraorbital vibrissae. “Vibrissa” is the anatomical term for a whisker, so an apparent feline eyebrow is better understood as part of the whisker array.

Because the hairs can be dark, pale, straight, curved or partly hidden by facial fur, they are easy to mistake for eyebrows. Their position creates the visual impression of a brow line, but their structure and job are sensory rather than cosmetic.
At a glance
| Feature | Human eyebrow | Cat hair above the eye |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A line of ordinary hairs in the brow region | Usually a supraorbital vibrissa, a specialized whisker |
| Follicle | Typical hair follicle | Unusually deep, nerve- and blood-vessel-rich follicle |
| Main information supplied | Helps protect the eye from moisture and contributes to expression | Provides close-range sensory information and helps detect contact near the eye |
| Safe grooming approach | People may shape their eyebrows | Do not routinely cut, pluck or pull it |
The comparison is categorical, not a claim that cats have no facial movement. Cats can move their eyelids, ears, muzzle and other facial muscles. It simply means that the prominent hairs above the eyes should not be treated as a cat equivalent of a human eyebrow.
What makes a whisker different from ordinary fur?
Whiskers are specialized hairs, often coarser and thicker than a cat’s ordinary coat. VCA Animal Hospitals explains that their roots extend about three times deeper than the roots of typical hairs. The follicles are supplied with nerves and blood vessels, allowing mechanical movement of the hair to be detected by the nervous system.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The hair shaft itself does not “feel” in the way living skin does. Instead, movement, vibration or contact at the shaft is transmitted to the sensory structures around the follicle. Merck Veterinary Manual describes specialized sensory cells associated with whiskers and certain other hair follicles. Together, the hair and its follicle function as a sensitive mechanical detector.
This arrangement is why trimming a whisker does not cause the same immediate pain as pulling it from the follicle, yet cutting can still remove useful sensory input until the hair grows back. Pulling is painful because it disturbs the innervated follicle. A whisker should therefore be treated more like a sensory appendage than like excess coat that can be styled.
How above-eye whiskers help a cat navigate
Whiskers gather information about the space immediately around a cat’s face. When a whisker bends or vibrates, the cat receives information about a nearby surface or object. Air movement can also alter the whisker, giving clues about something close by even when the object is difficult to see.

That close-range information complements vision rather than replacing it. A cat approaching a narrow space, investigating an object or moving in dim conditions can use whisker signals to build a better sense of what is near its head. The supraorbital set is positioned to monitor the area above and beside the eyes, where an unexpected object could otherwise make contact.
A protective response around the eyes
VCA notes that contact between a small particle and a whisker above the eye can prompt a blink or head shake. The response is protective: it can help the cat react quickly when something approaches a particularly vulnerable part of the face.
This does not mean every blink proves that a whisker was touched. Cats blink for many reasons, including normal eye lubrication and responses to light or irritation. The point is that an above-eye vibrissa can participate in a rapid warning system, in addition to its broader role in sensing nearby movement and surfaces.
Why do the hairs look like eyebrows?
Location is the main reason. Supraorbital vibrissae emerge above the eye, where people naturally expect to see eyebrows. Their length and stiffness make them stand out from the short fur on the forehead, and facial markings can create an apparent continuous brow.
Lighting and coat color also change what is visible. A white whisker on a dark face may be obvious from across a room, while a dark whisker on a dark coat may be difficult to see. Some hairs may angle outward or upward rather than forming a neat line, so one cat can look “browed” while another does not.

Do all cat breeds have the same whiskers above their eyes?
No single appearance or count should be treated as universal. Whisker number, length, thickness, color and angle vary between individual cats, and facial structure and coat pattern can make them easier or harder to see. The available veterinary explanations describe variation rather than a fixed breed-by-breed template.
A cat may have one side that appears fuller, a whisker that points in a different direction or occasional gaps after natural shedding. Those differences alone do not establish a health problem. They also do not show that a cat lacks the sensory system entirely simply because a particular hair is hard to find.
When variation deserves attention
Look at the skin and coat as well as the visible whisker. Sudden loss accompanied by redness, crusting, bald patches, itching, discharge or other coat changes warrants a veterinary examination. A veterinarian can determine whether the change reflects normal shedding, breakage, skin disease or another problem. Avoid trying to diagnose the cause from whisker appearance alone.

Can you read a cat’s mood from its “eyebrows”?
Not reliably. A whisker may shift when a cat is exploring, startled or reacting to something nearby, but the apparent position of one or two brow hairs is not a standalone emotional indicator. Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed explanation recommends considering multiple body-language cues.
For a more useful interpretation, observe the whole cat: ear position, tail movement, body posture, pupil size, facial tension, vocalization and the situation that preceded the behavior. A relaxed posture with neutral ears means something different from flattened ears, a tucked body and a rapidly lashing tail. The hairs above the eyes can be part of that overall picture, but they should not be used as a human-style eyebrow code.
Should you trim or pluck a cat’s eyebrow whiskers?
No. Routine grooming should leave whiskers intact. VCA advises that pulling a whisker is painful and that cutting can reduce a cat’s special awareness, potentially leaving the animal confused until the hair regrows.

If a whisker is accidentally cut
Do not attempt to “even out” the rest. A cut whisker is not usually an emergency by itself; the practical response is to leave the remaining whiskers alone and allow natural regrowth. Keep normal routines and watch for other signs of illness or distress. If the whisker was pulled out, the skin is bleeding or inflamed, or the cat is rubbing the eye or face, contact a veterinarian.

Whiskers can shed and regrow, so finding an occasional whisker does not automatically indicate disease. Regrowth takes time and is not necessarily synchronized between sides. Repeated or extensive loss, broken shafts, or loss occurring with skin and coat changes should be discussed with a veterinarian rather than treated with home grooming.
Food bowls and whisker contact
Some cats appear distressed when their whiskers repeatedly touch the sides of a deep or narrow food or water dish. VCA advises trying flatter dishes so the whiskers do not continually contact the container. PetMD similarly notes that a shallower dish may help a cat that reacts negatively around its bowl and recommends discussing persistent concerns with a veterinarian.
A shallow, wide bowl can be a reasonable environmental adjustment, but it is not a treatment for a diagnosed condition and there is no basis here for promising that a particular product will cure “whisker fatigue.” Introduce any bowl change calmly, keep it clean and make sure the cat can eat and drink comfortably. A sudden refusal to eat or drink, vomiting, drooling or signs of mouth pain needs veterinary attention rather than a bowl purchase.

“The long hairs are just extra fur.”
They are hair, but not ordinary fur in function. Their specialized follicles and sensory connections make them part of the vibrissae system.
“Cutting them is harmless because hair has no nerves.”
The shaft has no pain receptors, but the follicle is innervated. Cutting removes the portion that detects movement until it regrows; pulling disturbs the living follicle and hurts.

“A missing whisker proves the cat is sick.”
Whiskers can shed naturally. Concern is greater when loss is sudden, widespread, recurrent or accompanied by skin, coat, eye or behavioral changes.
“Eyebrow position tells me exactly how the cat feels.”
One visible hair is not a reliable mood gauge. Interpret the complete body-language pattern and context.
When to call a veterinarian

Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Redness, swelling, scabs, discharge, bald skin or persistent itching around the face.
- Repeated face rubbing, squinting, blinking, head shaking or obvious eye discomfort.
- A cat that stops eating or drinking, struggles at the bowl or shows other signs of illness.
- Whiskers that are repeatedly broken or damaged without an obvious explanation.
These signs have many possible causes, and a physical examination is needed to distinguish normal shedding from skin, eye or other medical problems. Do not apply human creams or attempt to remove damaged hairs unless a veterinarian instructs you to do so.
The practical answer
Cats do not have human-style eyebrows. The conspicuous hairs above their eyes are generally supraorbital vibrissae: specialized whiskers with deep, nerve-rich follicles. They help a cat detect nearby objects and air movement, and they can trigger protective blinking or head shaking when something approaches the eye.
Expect individual variation, avoid using the hairs as a mood meter, and do not cut, pluck or pull them as part of grooming. Let normal whiskers shed and regrow, use a flatter dish if bowl contact seems bothersome, and ask a veterinarian about sudden loss or any accompanying skin, eye, coat or eating changes.
