Do Cats Like Bells on Their Collars? What the Evidence Actually Shows

No study directly measures whether cats like collar bells. Here is what the prey-return studies, Cats Protection guidance and owner surveys actually show, and how to fit a bell safely.

No study available to date directly measures whether a cat likes wearing a bell. The studies that exist count the prey cats bring home, examine collar safety, or record what owners report doing. A cat that wears a bell without fuss is not proof that it enjoys the sound, and a cat that paws at its collar is not proof that it dislikes it. What the evidence does support is narrower: a bell can change how many birds and small mammals a cat brings home in some settings, and any bell has to be fitted and attached so it cannot trap the animal.

What the studies measure, and what they do not

Preference is a question about how an animal experiences something. To answer it, a study would need to observe a cat’s behavior with and without the bell and interpret that behavior as comfort or distress. The sources reviewed for this article do not do that. Their measures fall into three groups: prey brought home, how well collars and covers were tolerated by the cat’s routine, and what owners reported about their own collar choices. Each measure answers a different question, so it helps to keep them separate.

The prey studies

Swiss study, Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution (2022)

  • The study followed 31 cats in 26 households.
  • With a colorful Birdsbesafe collar-cover, cats brought home 37% fewer birds than in the comparison period.
  • When a bell was added to that colorful collar-cover, cats brought home 54–62% fewer mammals.
  • The added bell was not associated with fewer birds brought home, so the bell’s effect appears to differ by prey type.
  • Most participating households reported that their cats had adjusted to the collar-cover within a day.
  • The authors could not determine whether the behavioral effect came from the colorful cover or from the collar underneath it, because the cover was worn on a quick-release collar.
  • The authors note that results depend on the setting and that environmental factors can change how well the accessories work.

These figures describe prey brought home. They are not an exact count of kills, and they do not show effects on wildlife populations. Other studies of bells have not produced consistent results for birds and mammals, so a single positive result should not be generalized to every cat or every neighborhood.

Cornell Feline Health Center summary

Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes a study of 41 pet cats that brought home fewer mammals and birds during periods when they wore bells than during periods without them. The Cornell summary does not state the study’s publication year in the passage reviewed. The same article presents keeping a cat indoors as the surest way to prevent hunting at a particular feeder, which places bells below indoor management as a control method.

What owner surveys add

A 2024 survey by the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna recorded owners’ collar practices and attitudes across 4,940 respondents. Owners reported collar use at 32.9%, and bells were among the common collar attachments. The survey tells us what owners choose, not how cats respond to those choices, so it cannot answer whether cats like bells.

Reading your own cat’s response

Because no study measures preference directly, the most useful evidence is your own cat’s behavior over several days. Watch for patterns rather than single moments:

  • Changes in grooming, hiding, or reluctance to go to usual places.
  • The collar catching on furniture, fencing, or the cat’s own claws.
  • Redness, hair loss, or a worn patch where the collar sits.

If any of these appear, remove or adjust the bell and check the collar before trying again. A cat that settles within a day is not proof of liking the bell, but it is also no reason to assume the accessory is harming it.

Safety: fit, snags, and quick release

Cats Protection states: “The safest collars for cats are the quick-release or snap-opening collars.” The same organization advises that, if a bell is used, owners should make sure the cat’s claws cannot catch in it and should use a quick-release collar. Follow this sequence when fitting a bell:

  2. Place the bell so that its loop or clapper cannot hook a claw. Inspect the bell for gaps or loose parts before fitting.
  3. Check the fit by sliding two fingers comfortably under the collar.
  4. Recheck the fit after a few minutes, since collars can shift as the cat moves.
  5. Look at the collar daily for the first week, and again after any change in the cat’s routine.

Alternatives and complements

  • Indoor time at dawn and dusk. Cats Protection suggests keeping cats indoors at these times, and Cornell describes indoor access as the surest way to prevent hunting at a particular feeder.
  • Indoor play. Cats Protection recommends providing indoor play as a way to meet hunting urges without going outside.
  • Microchipping. For identification, Cats Protection recommends a microchip rather than relying on a collar tag, because collars can come off.
  • Colorful collar-covers. The Swiss study tested a Birdsbesafe collar-cover on a quick-release collar. Current availability and pricing were not verified for this article, so check before buying.

Comparing collar options

Option Main goal Prey evidence Evidence on the cat’s tolerance Safety notes
Quick-release collar with a bell Warning birds and small mammals Swiss study (2022): 54–62% fewer mammals with a bell added to a colorful collar-cover; no reduction in birds attributed to the bell. Cornell summary (41 cats): fewer mammals and birds during bell periods. Not stated for a bell worn alone; the Swiss study tested the cover and bell together. Quick-release or snap-opening design; claws must not catch in the bell; check fit with two fingers.
Colorful collar-cover on a quick-release collar Making the cat more visible to birds Swiss study (2022): 37% fewer birds brought home with the Birdsbesafe cover. Most households reported the cat adjusted within a day (Swiss study, 2022). Quick-release collar required; the study could not separate the cover’s effect from the collar’s.
Plain quick-release collar with no accessory Identification and collar safety Not stated; the sources reviewed did not compare a plain collar against a bell. Not stated. Quick-release design and fit check still apply.
Indoor access at dawn and dusk Reducing hunting Cornell summary (41 cats): described as the surest way to prevent hunting at a particular feeder. Not applicable; no collar involved. Not applicable.

Prey figures in this table are returns in specific studies, not exact kill counts or proof of ecosystem effects. Match the option to your goal: a bell targets prey returns, a collar-cover targets bird visibility, and microchipping and indoor time address identification and hunting more directly.
