Most healthy adult cats do not need routine professional grooming or regular baths. They usually keep themselves clean, while owners maintain the coat with gentle, coat-appropriate brushing. A professional groomer or veterinarian becomes important when mats are severe, bathing cannot be done safely, the cat cannot groom itself, or a coat change may signal illness.
The right choice depends on coat type, mat severity, your cat’s tolerance for handling, and its overall health—not simply on whether the cat has long fur or the weather is warm.

What professional grooming does—and when it is genuinely useful
Professional cat grooming generally means bathing, drying, brushing, dematting and, when necessary, clipping or shaving. It is a service for a specific care problem, not a requirement that every cat needs on a recurring schedule.
VCA Animal Hospitals says that most healthy adult cats are fastidious groomers and rarely require a bath. A healthy short-haired cat that keeps its coat clean and accepts occasional brushing may never need a professional appointment. Long, silky or curly coats can require much more maintenance, however, because loose hair and tangles are harder for a cat to manage alone.

Professional help is most useful in four situations:
- Severe or extensive mats: Dense tangles can pull on skin and may be unsafe to remove at home.
- Bathing that cannot be done safely: A frightened, struggling cat can injure itself or the person handling it.
- Reduced self-grooming: Age, arthritis, excess weight or another health problem can make it difficult for a cat to reach its coat.
- Possible skin or coat disease: A sudden deterioration in coat condition needs veterinary attention rather than cosmetic treatment alone.
VCA notes that many owners use a professional groomer for bathing, while some cats are sedated and groomed at a veterinary clinic. Sedation is a veterinary decision, not a routine grooming upgrade.
Choose the level of help by coat, mats and health
Use the following framework before booking an appointment. It separates routine maintenance from problems that need trained or medical care.

| Short coat, clean skin, no mats, cat tolerates handling | Gentle brushing at home | Use a stiff-bristle brush and stop if the cat becomes distressed. |
| Medium or long coat with manageable tangles | Frequent home brushing with a long-toothed metal comb or suitable brush | Work slowly and do not pull through knots. |
| Large, recurring or extensive mats | Professional groomer or veterinary clinic | Clippers, not scissors, should be used for mats. |
| Matred skin, redness, sores or unexplained coat decline | Veterinary examination | The underlying skin or health problem must be assessed. |
| Cat cannot groom itself or will not tolerate necessary care | Veterinary advice, with grooming support as needed | A clinic can decide whether sedation or medical treatment is appropriate. |
There is no universal grooming interval that fits every cat. A schedule should follow how quickly the coat tangles, whether the cat can maintain it, and whether brushing remains comfortable.
How often should you brush a cat?
Coat length and texture determine the starting point. VCA guidance indicates that long, silky or curly coats may need daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats. Short coats generally need less frequent brushing because loose hair and debris are easier for the cat to remove.

Short-haired cats
A stiff-bristle brush is designed for short coats. Brush often enough to remove loose hair and check the skin, adjusting the routine to shedding and the cat’s tolerance. The aim is gentle maintenance, not prolonged sessions.
Medium- and long-haired cats
Long-toothed metal combs or brushes, including offset-tine styles, can reach through fuller coats. Work in small sections so you can find knots close to the skin. Daily attention may be necessary for a long, silky or curly coat, especially in areas that rub or tangle easily.
When brushing frequency needs to change
Increase attention when you see small knots, clumps of loose hair, debris or a dulling coat. A sudden need for much more help, greasy or unkempt fur, dandruff, bald areas or a cat that stops grooming warrants a veterinary conversation rather than simply brushing harder.
A safe home-brushing routine
Home care works when the coat is still manageable and the cat can be handled without a struggle. Keep sessions short and end before the cat becomes overwhelmed.
- Choose the tool for the coat. Use a stiff-bristle brush for a short coat. For medium or long hair, choose a long-toothed metal comb or brush that can reach through the coat.
- Start when the cat is calm. A quiet room and a relaxed time make handling easier. Let the cat sniff the tool before you begin.
- Brush in small sections. Move gently through the coat rather than making forceful, repeated strokes over one knot.
- Check common trouble spots. Look behind the ears, around the neck, under the legs and anywhere the coat rubs together. These areas can tangle before the rest of the body.
- Stop at resistance. Excessive pulling hurts and can make the cat fearful of future grooming. If a knot will not release with gentle work, treat it as a mat that needs another solution.
- Inspect the skin. Look for redness, moisture, scabs, wounds or irritation hidden under the hair. Do not continue working over painful skin.
- Reward cooperation. Calm praise or a suitable reward can help the cat associate brief grooming with a positive experience.
Never force a prolonged session to finish a coat in one sitting. Several brief sessions are safer than wrestling with a cat or repeatedly pulling at tangles.

How do you remove mats from a cat’s fur?
Small, loose tangles may come apart with patient fingers and a coat-appropriate comb, but a tight mat can sit against the skin and conceal irritation. The critical rule is to avoid scissors. VCA advises using clippers rather than scissors because it is easy to cut skin caught inside a mat.
When a mat may be manageable at home
If the knot is small, clearly separate from the skin and the cat remains relaxed, you can try gentle work with a suitable comb. Do not yank, twist or keep working once the cat shows pain or agitation. Never assume a mat is superficial simply because it looks small from above.
When to call a groomer
Arrange professional help for severe or extensive tangles, a coat that is matted over large areas, or a cat that will not permit safe handling. A groomer can use appropriate clippers and controlled handling. Ask what the service includes and explain the extent of the mats before the appointment.
When a veterinarian is the better choice
If the skin under a mat is irritated, broken, wet, bleeding or foul-smelling, consult a veterinarian. Painful mats can conceal dermatitis or wounds, and removing the hair alone does not address the cause. Veterinary care is also appropriate when poor grooming is accompanied by stiffness, weight change, lethargy or other health changes.
How often should you bathe a cat?
Most healthy adult cats rarely need a bath. There is no single calendar-based frequency for all cats; bathing depends on age, lifestyle, coat condition and health. A bath may be justified when the coat is contaminated, a cat cannot clean itself, or a veterinarian has prescribed bathing for a skin condition.

Prepare the coat before water
Remove burrs and manageable tangles before bathing. VCA warns that tangles can become harder to remove after a bath, so washing a matted coat first can make the problem worse.
Use only cat-formulated shampoo
Human shampoo, including baby shampoo, is too harsh for cat skin. Use a product formulated for cats, and ask a veterinarian before frequent bathing, medicated shampoo or any product intended to treat a skin problem. A veterinarian can determine whether bathing is needed and which formulation is suitable.
Make the bath as controlled as possible
Have the shampoo, towels and a secure, nonslip setup ready before bringing the cat in. Keep handling gentle and efficient, protect the face from shampoo and water, rinse thoroughly and dry the cat in a warm, draft-free area. If the cat panics or cannot be handled safely, stop and seek professional or veterinary assistance rather than forcing the bath.
Do long-haired cats need a summer haircut?
Warm weather alone is not a reason to shave a healthy long-haired cat. The coat provides protection, and shaving can create stress and handling risks without solving a real problem. VCA notes that some cats with large, recurring mats or poor self-grooming may benefit from periodic shaving, sometimes with sedation. That decision should follow the cat’s coat and health needs, not a seasonal routine.

Professional groomer or veterinary clinic?
Choose a professional groomer when the main issue is coat maintenance that cannot be completed safely at home, such as extensive mats or a difficult bath, and the skin appears healthy. Choose a veterinary clinic when the coat change may reflect illness, the skin is irritated, the cat is painful, or sedation may be required.

Before scheduling, describe the coat length, location and extent of mats, the cat’s behavior during handling, and any redness or sores. Ask how the service will handle mats and what happens if the groomer finds injured skin. Do not treat a grooming appointment as a substitute for an examination when the cat’s health has changed.
Signs that grooming trouble may be a health problem
A cat that suddenly looks unkempt may be unable to groom rather than unwilling to do so. Contact a veterinarian if you notice:
- A clear decline in grooming or a coat that becomes greasy, clumped or dull.
- Recurring mats despite reasonable brushing.
- Red, sore, scabbed, moist or foul-smelling skin beneath the coat.
- Pain, stiffness, difficulty reaching the back or hindquarters, or reluctance to move.
- Weight change, reduced appetite, lethargy or other changes alongside coat deterioration.
- A need for frequent or medicated bathing.
Age, arthritis, weight and other medical factors can interfere with grooming. Treating those factors may improve coat care more effectively than repeatedly removing mats.

Practical decision checklist
- Look at the skin and coat, not just the hair length.
- Identify whether the problem is routine loose hair, a small tangle, extensive mats or a sudden coat change.
- Match the tool to the coat: stiff-bristle brush for short hair; long-toothed metal comb or brush for medium and long hair.
- Attempt only gentle brushing that the cat tolerates.
- Never use scissors on mats.
- Use a professional groomer for severe tangles or an unsafe bath.
- Use a veterinarian when skin is irritated, self-grooming has declined, sedation may be needed or illness is possible.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: routine professional grooming is unnecessary for many healthy adult cats, while targeted grooming or veterinary care can prevent pain and address problems that home brushing cannot safely solve.
