Do Cats Purr at Other Cats? What a Purr Can—and Can’t—Tell You

Cats purr around other cats as well as people, including mothers and kittens. The sound can occur in several situations, so interpret it in context rather than as a simple happiness signal.

No. Cats purr around other cats as well as people. Mother cats and kittens purr during early contact and nursing, and purring is also described in adult cat-to-cat interactions. But a purr by itself does not prove a cat is happy or tell you exactly what it wants; the situation and the rest of the cat’s behavior matter.

Do cats purr at other cats?

Yes. Purring is not reserved for communication with humans. A 2025 Scientific Reports article describes purring in both cat-cat and cat-human interactions, including affiliative contact as well as other situations. The evidence establishes that cats can purr around one another, but it does not provide a reliable population-wide estimate of how often adult cats purr to other adult cats.

That distinction matters: knowing that purring occurs between cats does not mean every cat will do it, or that every purr directed at another cat has the same meaning.

When do cats purr around other cats?

Mother cats and kittens

Mother-kitten contact is a clear example of cat-to-cat purring. Reviews describe purring around the nest and during nursing. Mothers and kittens also use other vocalizations, including chirps; evidence about chirp recognition should not be treated as proof of what every purr means. The 2021 review of cat communication in the Journal of Veterinary Science discusses vocalizations in this early relationship.

Adult cats together

Purring has also been described in adult cat-cat social communication. It may accompany a social interaction, but the sound alone cannot establish whether the cats are comfortable, seeking contact, or responding to something else. Watch what both cats do before, during, and after the purr rather than treating it as a universal sign of affection.

Why might a cat purr around a person?

Cats purr in human interactions, including during contact and when soliciting food. A 2021 review of cat-owner interactions notes that cats use visual and acoustic behaviors in relationships with people that they also use in cat-cat interactions. Some food-solicitation purrs include a high-frequency element that human listeners perceive as particularly urgent, as discussed in the 2025 Scientific Reports article. That is a finding about a particular solicitation context—not a rule that every purr is a request for food.

Does purring always mean a cat is happy?

No. Purring is associated with affiliative, low-arousal situations such as contact and nursing, but it has also been reported during solicitation and in stressful or painful circumstances. Because the same sound can occur in different contexts, it is not a stand-alone happiness test or a diagnosis.

Consider the whole picture: posture, appetite, activity, the social situation, and any changes from the cat’s usual behavior. If purring accompanies signs of illness, injury, or distress, contact a veterinarian for an assessment rather than relying on the sound to interpret what is wrong.

What research on purring can—and cannot—show

A 2023 review by David Reby and Andrey Anikin describes histological and biomechanical evidence that cat purring may be produced passively through the larynx, without requiring the active muscle vibration and independent neural oscillator proposed in earlier explanations. The review in Current Biology concerns how the sound may be produced; it does not explain the behavioral meaning of a particular purr.

The 2025 Scientific Reports paper reports recordings from 27 individual domestic cats in 12 private households and two animal shelters in Berlin, collected across 2020 and 2021. That describes the study sample, not how often cats purr at other cats across the domestic-cat population. Its individual-cat classification results likewise should not be mistaken for a measure of purring frequency or meaning.

Other research helps frame the broader relationship: a 2021 review of social interactions between cats and their owners discusses shared visual and acoustic behaviors, while a 2017 study on cat-owner interactions after separation provides background literature associating purring with contentment or care solicitation. That background is not a direct finding about the meaning of every purr.
