The nine options below reflect Catster’s 2026 editorial picks, organized by format and use—not independent hands-on test results. Check the current package for ingredients, calories, feeding directions, and whether the food is supplemental or complete before serving.
How to choose a cat meal topper
Start with the reason for adding one. A lickable puree may suit a cat that prefers smooth textures; broth, gravy, or flakes offer a different mouthfeel and can add moisture. Freeze-dried pieces can be served as directed or rehydrated when a softer texture is wanted. No format is universally appealing, and a topper should not be treated as a remedy for a newly changed appetite.

- Check nutritional status: Look for wording such as “intermittent or supplemental feeding” or “complement.” These products are not necessarily complete meals. Read the nutritional guarantee and life-stage statement to determine whether a food is complete and balanced for your cat’s needs.
- Count calories: VCA Animal Hospitals advises that toppers and treats together should make up no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calorie intake. This is general veterinary guidance, not a serving recommendation for any particular product; use the package’s calorie information and feeding directions.
- Review ingredients and restrictions: Check the full ingredient list and ask your veterinarian before introducing a topper if your cat has an allergy, eats a prescription diet, or has a chronic illness or weight concern.
- Consider texture and moisture: Broths and rehydrated foods change the meal’s texture and moisture, but they should not be presented as treatment for dehydration or disease.
Cornell Feline Health Center notes that canned cat food generally has at least 75% moisture; that figure describes canned food generally, not every topper format. A cat’s preference may also depend on texture: a cat that likes a smooth puree may reject chunks in gravy.

1. Inaba Churu Tuna & Chicken Variety Pack — best overall pick
Catster names this lickable puree variety pack its best overall choice. Its smooth format is one option for cats that prefer puree over pieces or chunks. Check the current pack’s flavors, ingredients, feeding directions, and calories; a variety pack does not remove the need to account for each serving.
2. Tiki Cat Stix Tuna — value pick
Catster’s value selection is another lickable-style option, with tuna as the named flavor. Compare the current package’s calorie and ingredient information with other foods your cat eats, and use the maker’s serving directions rather than assuming a stick is a negligible treat.

4. Friskies Lil’ Soups — broth-style option
Catster also discusses Friskies Lil’ Soups, a soup-style format for cats that may prefer a looser texture. Do not assume that a product sold as a soup or topper is a complete meal; check its nutritional statement, ingredients, calories, and feeding directions on the current label.

5. Instinct Freeze-Dried Raw Boost Mixers — freeze-dried option
Catster includes Instinct Freeze-Dried Raw Boost Mixers among the products it discusses. Follow the current label’s directions for serving and storage, and check whether the product is intended only as a supplemental mixer. Cornell warns that raw or gently cooked diets can carry bacteria, viruses, or parasites, and says evidence of health benefit is lacking. Freeze-dried raw products therefore require careful handling and should not be treated as inherently safer or more beneficial because they are freeze-dried.
6. Fancy Feast Appetizers Flaked Tongol Tuna — supplemental wet complement
Purina describes Fancy Feast Appetizers Flaked Tongol Tuna as tender flaked tuna in broth and labels it a cat food complement. Its U.S. product page says it is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding, may be fed daily with complete and balanced cat food, and directs feeding up to one tray per day for an average-size adult cat. Follow the current package directions for your cat, and include its calories in the daily total.

7. Marie’s Magical Dinner Dust — sprinkle-on format
Stella & Chewy’s describes Marie’s Magical Dinner Dust as formulated for supplemental feeding and gives a maker-specified sprinkle amount. Use the directions on the current product label; do not treat a sprinkle-on format as permission to exceed the cat’s overall calorie allowance or to replace a complete diet.

8. Stella’s Solutions — check the specific product’s status
Stella & Chewy’s collection says some Stella’s Solutions products can be fed as a topper or as a complete and balanced meal. That distinction is product-specific: verify the exact item’s nutritional adequacy statement, life-stage suitability, and serving directions before deciding whether it can replace a meal.

9. Rehydrated freeze-dried mix-ins — softer texture when prepared as directed
Stella & Chewy’s recommends rehydrating its freeze-dried mix-ins with tepid water or bone broth when a softer texture or more moisture is desired. Treat this as the maker’s preparation guidance, and check the specific product label for directions. Adding liquid changes texture and moisture, not the product’s nutritional status.

If a cat’s appetite has changed, do not assume the cause is pickiness or try to solve it by cycling through toppers. NC State Veterinary Hospital advises ruling out medical causes before treating picky eating as a preference issue. Contact a veterinarian about a new or persistent change in eating, especially if the cat is refusing food or has other symptoms. Cornell warns that a cat that refuses to eat can develop serious medical problems.
Environmental or feeding adjustments may help in some cases, but choices such as broth, fish oil, or probiotics are not appropriate for every cat. Ask a veterinarian before adding them, particularly when a cat has a medical condition, dietary restriction, or prescription diet.
Quick Recap
Quick label check before serving
- Read the product’s nutritional statement. Confirm whether it is complete and balanced for the relevant life stage or intended only for supplemental feeding.
- Check the ingredients and calorie information. Consider allergies, dietary restrictions, and the calories in the portion you plan to serve.
- Follow the feeding and preparation directions. Do not infer a safe amount from the product’s format or from another cat’s serving.
- Keep the full diet in view. Include toppers and treats in the daily calorie total and preserve the balance of the cat’s regular complete food.
- Ask a veterinarian when the context is medical. A prescription diet, chronic illness, weight concern, or appetite change calls for individualized advice.
