Yes—cats sweat, mainly through the pads of their paws. That is a small, localized response, not a human-style whole-body cooling system. A cat may also groom, seek shade and rest when it is warm. Damp paw prints can therefore be normal, and they can appear when a cat is stressed. Panting or breathing with the mouth open is different: in cats, it is abnormal and can signal dangerous overheating. If your cat is panting, confused, drooling or collapsing, move it to a cool place and contact a veterinarian immediately.
Where do cats sweat?
Paw pads are the main sweating area
Cats have sweat glands on their paw pads. When a cat is warm, frightened or stressed, moisture can collect on the pads and transfer to the floor. This is why you may notice small wet footprints on tile, glass or another smooth surface. The effect is localized: cats do not perspire over their entire bodies in the way people do.

Because only the paws become noticeably damp, paw-pad sweating should not be treated as proof that a cat has cooled itself adequately. The veterinary guidance from Tufts and Texas A&M describes paw-pad sweating as limited rather than a major, whole-body heat-release mechanism. There is no established figure for how much heat a cat can remove through its paws, so a damp floor trail cannot be converted into a measure of safe cooling.
Why a stressed cat may leave wet prints
Heat is not the only explanation for damp paws. Cats Protection notes that stress can also produce sweaty paw pads. A frightened cat at the clinic, during travel or around an unfamiliar animal may leave damp marks even if its body temperature is not dangerously high. Consider the surroundings and the cat’s behavior instead of diagnosing heatstroke from one wet print.

How cats cool themselves when it is warm
Grooming adds moisture
Cats use grooming as another heat-management behavior. Texas A&M explains that licking the paws and chest places moisture on the coat. As that moisture evaporates, it can provide some cooling. Grooming is a normal behavior, but it has limits; it does not make a hot, poorly ventilated room safe.
Shade, rest and a cooler location
Cats Protection advises that cats commonly seek shade and rest during the warmer part of the day. A cat may move away from a sunny window, stretch on a cool floor or reduce activity. These choices help it avoid producing additional body heat, but they depend on the cat having access to a genuinely cooler, safe area.
Allowing a cat to choose among shaded, ventilated resting places is more useful than trying to make it exercise or remain in a single spot. Keep fresh water available and check that the animal can leave a sunny enclosure, conservatory, vehicle or other heat-trapping space. A cat that cannot escape rising temperatures can deteriorate even if its paws are not visibly wet.

Is panting normal for a cat?
No. Tufts describes panting or open-mouth breathing in cats as abnormal and recommends prompt veterinary attention, particularly when heat may be involved. A cat may breathe rapidly after intense fear or exertion, but persistent, recurrent or unexplained panting should not be dismissed as ordinary cooling behavior. Texas A&M likewise advises attention when panting continues or returns.
Do not wait for a cat to develop dramatic symptoms before acting. Cats can hide illness, and panting may be the first obvious sign that the animal is struggling. Treat open-mouth breathing as a reason to stop activity, move the cat away from heat and call a veterinary service for immediate advice.
Recognizing heatstroke
Heatstroke is an emergency, not a condition to manage with a cooling accessory alone. Cats Protection lists the following possible warning signs:

| Sign | What it can look like | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Restlessness | Repeatedly changing position or appearing unable to settle | Move the cat out of the hot environment and begin gentle cooling while contacting a veterinarian. |
| Fast breathing or panting | Rapid breaths, open-mouth breathing or obvious respiratory effort | Seek prompt veterinary attention; do not assume the cat will recover unaided. |
| Drooling | Saliva running from the mouth or unusual wetness around the muzzle | Call a veterinarian immediately and continue safe, gradual cooling. |
| Confusion | Disorientation, unusual responses or difficulty behaving normally | Treat it as urgent and arrange veterinary care without delay. |
| Vomiting or diarrhea | Gastrointestinal upset accompanying heat exposure | Contact a veterinarian immediately, even if the cat later appears quieter. |
| Collapse | Weakness, inability to stand or loss of consciousness | This is an emergency requiring immediate veterinary treatment. |
These signs can have causes other than heat, but that uncertainty is not a reason to monitor at home. A veterinarian can assess the cat and address complications that are not visible to an owner.
What to do if your cat may be overheating
- Move the cat to a cool, safe area. Get it away from direct sun and any enclosed or poorly ventilated space. Reduce handling and activity; a distressed cat can become hotter if it struggles.
- Start gradual cooling. Cats Protection advises using a cloth and lukewarm water for gradual cooling. Cornell’s feline heat-safety guidance recommends gently wetting the fur with cool, not very cold, water. The shared principle is gentle cooling rather than an abrupt ice-cold treatment.
- Contact a veterinarian immediately. Call your regular clinic or an emergency veterinary service while cooling the cat. Tell the clinician what signs you observed, where the cat was and what cooling you have provided.
- Transport safely if instructed. Use a carrier that allows airflow, keep the vehicle cool and avoid wrapping the cat in thick bedding. Follow the veterinary team’s directions during transport.
Do not allow a cooling mat, fan or bowl of water to delay the call. Such measures may improve comfort, but they do not treat heatstroke or replace professional assessment.
Preventing overheating before it starts
Improve the environment
- Provide access to shade and the coolest available room, especially during the warmest part of the day.
- Keep water available in a location the cat can reach without crossing a hot surface or entering direct sun.
- Never leave a cat in a parked vehicle or another enclosed area that can heat rapidly.
- Check indoor spaces such as sunrooms and upper floors, where temperatures may remain high even when another room feels comfortable.
- Watch the cat’s behavior, breathing and responsiveness rather than relying on paw dampness as a temperature test.
Optional cooling aids
Cornell lists a cooling mat as one way to offer a cool resting place. It is an optional comfort aid: some cats use one readily, while others avoid unfamiliar textures or smells. Place it where the cat already chooses to rest and allow the animal to move away freely. A mat should never be presented as emergency treatment, and it should not substitute for moving the cat to a cooler environment or calling a veterinarian when warning signs appear.

Protect light-colored skin from sun
Cornell also advises using pet-safe sunscreen on the ear tips and nose of light-colored cats to help prevent skin cancer. This is sun protection, not a sweating or heatstroke treatment. Use only a product labeled safe for pets and follow veterinary advice about where and how to apply it; do not use human sunscreen unless a veterinarian has specifically confirmed that product is appropriate.

A few damp prints on a floor can fit two benign explanations: a warm cat has used its paw pads to release a small amount of sweat, or a stressed cat has developed moist pads. Look at the complete situation. If the cat is comfortable, alert, breathing normally and able to move to a cooler place, the prints alone do not establish dangerous overheating.

The interpretation changes when damp paws occur with panting, open-mouth breathing, drooling, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, pronounced restlessness or collapse. Those combinations require the emergency steps above. Do not wait for the paws to become drier before seeking help.

Common misunderstandings about feline sweating
“My cat has fur, so it cannot sweat”
Fur does not prevent sweating at the paw pads. The visible moisture is simply concentrated in a small area rather than spread across the coat. A dry coat therefore does not prove that a cat is cool, and wet paws do not prove that cooling is sufficient.
“Panting means my cat is cooling normally”
That assumption is unsafe. Veterinary guidance identifies panting and open-mouth breathing as abnormal in cats. It warrants prompt attention, particularly in warm conditions, instead of being treated as the feline equivalent of routine dog panting.
“A cold bath will fix overheating”
The recommended approach is gentle, gradual cooling with cool or lukewarm water, not very cold water. Cooling is first aid while veterinary help is arranged; it is not a complete treatment for heatstroke.

A mat can provide a preferred cool resting spot, but it cannot evaluate dehydration, breathing problems or organ injury. If heatstroke signs are present, professional care remains necessary regardless of which products are available.
When to call the veterinarian
Call promptly for any panting or open-mouth breathing that is persistent, recurrent or unexplained. Contact a veterinarian immediately when breathing changes occur with drooling, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness or collapse, or when a cat has been trapped in a hot environment. While waiting for instructions, move the cat to a cool area and use gentle cooling rather than delaying care to search for a product or diagnose the exact cause yourself.
