Do Dogs Like Music? What Canine Studies Actually Show

Studies show that music can change dogs’ behavior, with classical music often linked to calmer kennel behavior—but that does not prove every dog enjoys it. Here is how to interpret the evidence and try music safely.

Dogs can respond to music, but science cannot say that every dog likes it or that one genre is universally best. In kennel studies, classical music has often been linked with more lying or resting and less standing or vocalizing. Those are observable changes in behavior, not proof of subjective enjoyment. Responses vary by dog and setting, and calming effects can fade as a dog gets used to the sound.

You can offer quiet music as optional enrichment and watch your own dog’s response. Treat it as a comfort aid—not a cure for anxiety—and stop if your dog shows signs of distress.

What “liking music” means in dogs

People usually mean that a dog enjoys listening when they ask whether it likes music. Studies cannot measure a dog’s private musical experience directly. They measure behaviors such as lying, standing, barking and vocalizing, along with indicators such as heart-rate variability, salivary cortisol or an owner’s satisfaction with a veterinary visit.

A dog that lies down during music may be calmer, tired, inhibited, or simply accustomed to the room. A dog that leaves the room may dislike the sound, find the volume uncomfortable, or be responding to something unrelated. The safest conclusion is therefore narrower: music can change a dog’s observable behavior, and the direction and size of that change depend on the individual dog, the sound, the volume, the setting and the length of exposure.

No population-level percentage establishes how many dogs “like music.” A 2020 review found nine experimental reports, but that is a count of studies—not a prevalence estimate for the dog population.

“Music therapy yields many positive health outcomes in humans, but the effects of music on the health and welfare of nonhuman animals vary greatly with the type of music played, the ethology of the species, and the personality and learning history of individual animals.”

What studies have found

The 2020 review: classical music was associated with calmer behavior

The review examined experimental studies in shelters, kennels and veterinary hospitals. Across the evidence it considered, classical music was generally associated with behaviors interpreted as calmer in potentially stressful settings. The authors also emphasized that dogs differ and that many studies were small or limited by their design.

The review did not find clear evidence that music composed or marketed specifically for dogs produced benefits beyond those associated with randomly selected classical music. That does not prove dog-specific recordings are useless; it means the available studies did not establish an added advantage.

Seven-day kennel crossover: possible calming, followed by habituation

In a kennel crossover study, dogs experienced silence and classical music during consecutive seven-day periods. During music exposure, behavioral measures and heart-rate-variability measures shifted in directions the investigators interpreted as reduced stress. Salivary cortisol did not show a consistent pattern, so the physiological evidence was not uniformly calming.

The apparent benefits diminished by the seventh day. A small follow-up suggested that habituation—the response becoming weaker after repeated exposure—could begin quickly. Results from kenneled dogs under a fixed schedule should not be treated as proof that playing the same playlist continuously at home will keep a dog calm.

Five genres in 38 kennelled dogs: behavior changed, but no genre won

A separate five-day study exposed 38 kenneled dogs to soft rock, Motown, pop, reggae and classical music. While music played, the dogs spent more time lying and less time standing regardless of genre. Researchers saw no effect on barking during playback. Dogs were more likely to bark after the auditory enrichment stopped.

This finding does not identify a favorite genre. It shows that the presence of music was associated with a change in posture, while the genre differences tested did not produce a reliable ranking. The increase in barking after playback ended also cautions against assuming that a quiet period during music means a lasting reduction in arousal.

Veterinary teaching hospital: owners preferred original classical music

A randomized study of 74 dogs at a veterinary teaching hospital compared modified classical music, the same music in its original format and no music. Owners reported greater satisfaction with the visit when the original music was played.

Owner satisfaction is useful information about the human experience, but it is not a direct measure of canine anxiety. The study did not establish that music reduced dogs’ anxiety, and its authors called for more research on that question.

Rescue-shelter study: the abstract does not support a genre ranking

A shelter study examined human conversation, classical, heavy metal and pop music, plus a control condition, in 50 dogs. The accessible abstract describes the design but does not provide enough comparative results to say that one of those sounds was preferred. It should not be used to claim that heavy metal, pop or classical music is best for shelter dogs or for dogs generally.

Does classical music calm dogs better than other music?

Classical music is the most consistently associated with calmer observed behavior in the available studies, especially in kennel settings. That is a statement about the pattern of published observations, not a universal prescription. The five-genre study found more lying and less standing with every genre it tested, and it did not establish a classical-music advantage.

There is no established “best genre” for every dog. Sound characteristics—tempo, instrumentation, sudden changes and loudness—may matter as much as the label attached to a genre. Two recordings classified as classical can sound very different, and a dog may respond differently to each. A dog’s past learning history and the context in which music is played can also shape the response.

Question What the evidence supports What it does not establish
Does music change behavior? Yes, studies report changes such as more lying or less standing in some settings. That every dog enjoys music or that stillness always means pleasure.
Is classical music calming? It is often associated with calmer observed behavior in kennel studies. A universal effect, a superior genre for every dog or a treatment for anxiety.
Do dog-specific playlists work better? The 2020 review found no clear added benefit over ordinary classical music in the studies it examined. That dog-specific recordings have been definitively disproved.
Does music reduce anxiety at the veterinary hospital? Original classical music was linked with higher owner satisfaction in one randomized study. A demonstrated reduction in canine anxiety.
Do effects last? Some kennel indicators weakened with repeated exposure, suggesting habituation. That a playlist will continue working indefinitely.

How to test music with your own dog

Use a short, controlled trial rather than assuming a recording will help. The goal is to learn your dog’s individual response under ordinary conditions.

  1. Choose a calm starting situation. Try the test when your dog is fed, exercised and not already distressed. Do not introduce unfamiliar music during a panic episode, thunderstorm or emergency.
  2. Start with low volume. Set the playback no louder than a quiet conversation in the room. Dogs hear a broad range of frequencies, and a volume that seems moderate to you may be uncomfortable at close range.
  3. Play one recording for a short period. Begin with about 10 to 15 minutes so you can observe the whole session. A basic speaker you already own is sufficient; the studies did not test particular speakers or show that buying equipment improves outcomes.
  4. Observe before, during and after. Note whether your dog settles, keeps resting, changes position, pants, scans the room, vocalizes, hides or leaves. Continue watching for several minutes after the music stops because one kennel study found more barking after playback ended.
  5. Repeat on separate days, not continuously. A single reaction can reflect the setting rather than the music. Try the same recording at similar times on a few different days, leaving quiet periods between sessions.
  6. Change only one variable at a time. If your dog appears comfortable but the effect is unclear, test a different recording or a different volume—not both at once. This helps you identify whether the response is linked to the sound.
  7. Stop at the first clear sign of discomfort. Turn the volume down or stop playback if your dog tries to escape, pants without heat or exercise, trembles, repeatedly licks its lips, freezes, growls or cannot settle.

How to read your dog’s response

Signs that the sound may be acceptable enrichment

  • The dog chooses to remain in the room and can disengage from the speaker.
  • Breathing stays normal for the situation, and the body looks loose rather than rigid.
  • The dog settles into ordinary rest, changes position naturally or naps without repeatedly checking the sound source.
  • Normal activities—drinking, eating, gentle play or responding to you—continue.

These signs show tolerance or possible relaxation; they still cannot prove that the dog experiences musical enjoyment.

Signs to reduce or stop playback

  • Moving away, hiding, attempting to leave or repeatedly orienting toward the speaker.
  • Stiff posture, tucked tail, pinned ears, trembling, excessive panting or repeated lip-licking.
  • New whining, barking, pacing, inability to settle or other behavior that begins when the music starts.

Do not force a dog to stay near a speaker to “get used to” music. If a sound repeatedly triggers distress, remove it and discuss the broader pattern with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.

Volume, timing and habituation matter

Music is an environmental input, not a medication. Keep it quieter than the other sounds competing for your dog’s attention, avoid sudden starts and stops, and leave the dog a choice about whether to remain nearby. Playing music all day may make any effect less noticeable and can make it harder to tell whether the dog is comfortable.

Habituation is a central limitation in the evidence. In the seven-day kennel study, calming indicators were reduced by the seventh day, and a small follow-up suggested that the change could begin quickly. If a playlist seemed useful at first but no longer changes behavior, do not automatically increase the volume or play it for longer. Try quiet periods, vary enrichment appropriately and reassess the original trigger for your dog’s stress.

Music can also become a cue. If it is played only during departures, storms or clinic visits, a dog may eventually associate it with those events. Pairing a quiet recording with ordinary, pleasant periods may avoid making the sound a warning signal, but there is no guarantee that conditioning will produce calm.

Music is not a treatment for anxiety

Noise sensitivity, separation-related distress, fear of handling and other anxiety problems can require a behavioral plan, environmental changes and sometimes veterinary treatment. The studies summarized here do not show that music cures any of those conditions.

Seek professional help when fear is intense, persistent, worsening, causes injury or interferes with eating, sleep or normal activity. A veterinarian can check for pain or illness and help decide whether a certified behavior professional or medication is appropriate. Use music, if your dog tolerates it, as one optional part of that plan—not as a substitute for assessment.

Common mistakes owners make

  • Assuming stillness equals happiness. A dog may be quiet because it is relaxed, inhibited, fearful or simply resting for another reason. Interpret posture, breathing, choice and behavior after playback together.
  • Declaring a genre winner. Current studies do not establish a universally preferred genre, and the five-genre kennel study found similar posture changes across all tested genres.
  • Expecting permanent benefits. Repeated exposure can reduce observable effects, so a recording that worked on Monday may not have the same impact later.
  • Using owner impressions as dog evidence. The veterinary-hospital study found higher owner satisfaction with original classical music, but that result did not demonstrate lower canine anxiety.
  • Turning a speaker into a treatment purchase. Playback equipment is simply a way to deliver sound. No study here shows that a particular device improves welfare.
  • Leaving music on during distress without monitoring. If the dog is reacting badly, continuous playback can prolong the problem. Stop, provide distance from the sound and address the underlying trigger.

The practical answer

Your dog may find quiet music neutral, soothing or irritating, and the only reliable way to know is to observe that individual dog in context. Classical music is a reasonable low-volume option because it has the most repeated association with calmer behavior in kennel studies, but no evidence supports calling it a universal favorite. Watch for genuine comfort rather than assuming that silence, lying down or an owner’s satisfaction proves enjoyment, and be prepared for any effect to fade with habituation.
