Choose a physical fence if you need a barrier that can keep your dog in and people or other animals out. In-ground, wireless, and GPS dog fences instead rely on a receiver collar, training, and the dog responding to a boundary cue; they do not physically block entry or prevent every escape. The right choice depends on your dog’s habits, your yard’s layout, and how much reliability you need from a physical barrier.
Physical fence or electronic containment?
A physical fence creates an actual barrier, usually with a gate. Depending on its design, it can also provide privacy or reduce a dog’s view of passersby. Electronic containment uses a collar and a boundary signal to cue a trained dog to turn back. It does not keep loose animals, wildlife, visitors, or children from entering the yard. The American Kennel Club’s fence overview and PetSafe’s comparison of wired, wireless, and GPS systems describe these different functions.
If separation from outside animals or people matters, an electronic boundary alone does not meet that need. Some households may use electronic containment for a mapped boundary, but it should not be treated as a substitute for a barrier where keeping others out is important.
Match a physical fence to your dog’s behavior
Before choosing materials or height, consider how your dog behaves in the yard. Digging, jumping, climbing, chasing wildlife, reacting to passersby, guarding, and prior escape attempts all affect the design. AKC recommends tailoring fence features to a dog’s habits; dogs that dig may need a barrier at the bottom, while jumpers and chasers may need a taller, stronger fence.

- Digging: Check for gaps under the fence and consider a suitable bottom barrier.
- Jumping or climbing: Assess height and footholds, especially near objects a dog could use to get over the fence.
- Chasing or reacting to activity: Consider strength and whether a less visible fence could reduce visual triggers.
- Protective behavior: Inspect gates and latches, and consider whether the design limits access to people approaching the yard.
- Previous escapes: Look for the specific weak point the dog exploited rather than assuming a different fence material alone will solve it.
Inspect the complete perimeter, including gates, corners, ground-level openings, and signs of wear. A sound fence can become less effective as materials deteriorate or a latch loosens.
Compare electronic fence types
All three electronic categories depend on a collar and training rather than a physical barrier. Their main differences are how the boundary is created and how well that shape fits your property.

| Type | How the boundary works | Potential fit | Tradeoffs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-ground wired | A buried wire marks the boundary and signals a receiver collar nearby. | Useful when you need a custom route around parts of a yard, subject to the particular model and installation. | Requires installing wire and training the dog. It does not block entry into the yard. |
| Wireless | An indoor transmitter creates a circular radio boundary around its location. | May suit a relatively open area where a circle fits the usable space; some PetSafe systems are described by the manufacturer as portable and relatively quick to set up. | A circle may cross property lines or leave corners outside the usable area. PetSafe says metal and structures can affect its systems; placement and site conditions matter. |
| GPS | A collar uses satellite positioning in relation to a boundary mapped in an app. | Can offer a flexible mapped shape without buried wire, including on some large or irregular properties. | Positioning depends on GPS conditions. Ask the maker how it defines accuracy and tests performance around trees and buildings; do not assume a mapped line is a physical barrier. |
These are category-level distinctions, not guarantees about every product. PetSafe’s July 20, 2026 guide and its current fence listings describe specific product families and manufacturer coverage claims. Verify the exact model’s boundary limits, compatibility, and documentation against your property rather than treating coverage figures as universal standards.
Check the yard layout and environment
Sketch the area where your dog should be allowed and compare it with the property boundary, roads, neighboring yards, gardens, buildings, and trees. A wired layout may be routed to fit a chosen shape; a wireless circle may not align with property lines or corners; a GPS boundary must be mapped and depend on satellite positioning. In every case, confirm the usable area for the model you are considering.

If you experience any issues while using the dog fence, please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to assist you and provide a suitable solution.
- GPS systems: Ask how the manufacturer defines boundary accuracy, where it has tested the system, and what performance to expect near tree canopy or tall buildings. A SpotOn-sponsored AKC evaluation published April 27, 2026 raises environmental conditions as a consideration; its product-related claims are sponsored, not independent testing.
- Wireless systems: Check transmitter placement and ask about interference from metal and structures. PetSafe describes these considerations for its systems; conditions may differ by model and site.
- Physical fences: Check terrain, likely digging routes, gate locations, and whether the fence can be maintained in good condition.
Training, supervision, and safety
Electronic containment is not a set-and-forget boundary. PetSafe recommends consistent, reward-based boundary training and flags during training. Its guidance also advises getting professional input for dogs with anxiety, high prey drive, certain health conditions, or puppies under six months. These are manufacturer recommendations for its systems, not universal veterinary rules for every dog or product.
Plan to supervise your dog, particularly during training and when the system’s reliability is uncertain. Consider whether your dog is likely to respond to a boundary cue when excited or pursuing something. If not, discuss suitability with a qualified reward-based trainer before relying on electronic containment.

Power and upkeep are model-specific. A PetSafe manual for a wireless system states, “If the system loses power, it will not contain your pet,” and recommends a UPS for that system. Check the manual for the exact model you own or plan to buy; do not apply one product’s power guidance to another by assumption.

Choose with this checklist
- Decide whether a barrier is necessary. If keeping people or other animals out matters, choose a physical fence or another appropriate physical barrier rather than relying on electronic containment alone.
- List your dog’s likely escape behaviors. Include digging, jumping, climbing, chasing, reactivity, guarding, and any past escape attempts.
- Map the usable yard. Compare the desired boundary with roads, neighboring properties, gardens, obstacles, and the actual boundary shape each system can create.
- Review installation and environmental demands. Compare wire installation, transmitter placement, or GPS mapping and ask how the chosen model handles relevant site conditions.
- Read the exact manual and training plan. Confirm dog suitability, collar and boundary compatibility, power behavior, upkeep, and the time and supervision required for training.
- Check accessories before ordering. Boundary wire and training flags are not automatically compatible across systems. Match any replacement or accessory to the system’s manual, connectors, and model.
How to interpret an often-quoted escape statistic
An AKC article about GPS dog fences reports that 23% of dogs confined by traditional fencing had escaped at some point and attributes the figure to a study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The AKC page is sponsored by SpotOn, and the information available on that page does not identify the study year or enough detail about its population and methods to assess the figure. Treat it as a secondary report, not a general measure of fence performance; the original study would need to be checked before drawing broader conclusions.
