A dog repeating an amusing behavior may have learned that it brings attention or starts another interaction; that is different from knowing why a person laughed or intending to make the person laugh.
What would it mean for a dog to understand a practical joke?
A practical joke involves more than an action that looks mischievous to a person. To understand one in the human sense, a dog would need to recognize that something is intentionally incongruous or misleading and, perhaps, act with the aim of amusing someone. An animal can take part in playful, surprising, or even deceptive-looking behavior without showing that it understands those ideas.

That distinction matters when an ordinary interaction becomes a funny story. A dog might run off with a toy, pause as a person reaches for it, or repeat an action after the person laughs. Those are observations. “The dog is teasing me on purpose” is an interpretation of the dog’s motive, and the behavior alone does not establish it.

Researchers can record what dogs and people do, how behavior changes in response to a signal, and how observers code affect. Demonstrating what a dog understands about another person’s intention is a different and harder question. The studies relevant here document play, signals, laughter, and responses to gestures; none directly tests whether dogs recognize practical jokes as jokes.

What the studies show about dog-human play
In a 2016 observational study, Alexandra Horowitz and Julie Hecht coded 187 dog-human play bouts submitted through a citizen-science project. They identified more than 30 recognizable routines, including roughhousing, tug, chase, keep-away, and parallel running. The authors also identified a coded category called “tease.” As their abstract puts it, “One novel category of play, ‘tease’, was found.” This names a kind of observed play; it does not establish that dogs understand human-style teasing or jokes.
The study’s affect coding adds context, not a test of humor comprehension. Dogs’ affect was coded as overwhelmingly positive in this sample. Physical contact, owner movement, and closeness correlated with positive owner affect. These findings describe the coded videos and the relationship between those features and affect; they do not show that a dog intended to produce a particular feeling in its person.
Play signals can change what happens next
A study of dog-owner play sessions found that human bows and lunges altered dogs’ subsequent behavior. That supports a focused conclusion: some human actions can communicate a playful context to dogs. It does not mean every unusual movement is understood as a joke, or that dogs infer a person’s hidden intention from it.
Signals need to be interpreted in context. A movement that functions as a play cue during an established game may not carry the same meaning in another situation. The evidence supports responsiveness to particular actions in play, not a universal translation of human gestures into a canine understanding of humor.

Deceptive-looking play is not proof of a joke
Robert W. Mitchell and N. S. Thompson’s 1993 comparison of familiar and unfamiliar partners examined actions they described in terms of deception during dog-human play. Object-related actions—human show-object/throw-object and dog retrieve-object behaviors—were more frequent than certain movement-direction or petting-based deceptions. The finding concerns the frequency of behaviors in play. It does not show that a dog planned to fool a person for comic effect or understood a person’s resulting surprise as funny.
In everyday language, “trick,” “tease,” and “joke” can all describe an action that seems to mislead someone. In a scientific interpretation, the visible action and the inferred mental purpose must be kept separate. A behavior can resemble a trick without demonstrating that the animal represents the situation as a joke.
Does a dog know when a person is laughing?
Not necessarily in the way people might hope. Robert W. Mitchell and Kristi Sinkhorn analyzed recorded dog-human play interactions from the United States. In their sample of 46 interactions, they identified 116 laughs; laughter occurred during 61% of interactions and did not induce play in their observations. The result is inconsistent with the idea that laughter, by itself, functioned as a play signal for the dogs in those recordings.

The authors’ conclusion was: “These data are largely consistent with laughter signaling positive affect and awareness of (usually nonserious) social incongruity, and inconsistent with laughter signaling playfulness to dogs.” That is an observational finding about the recorded interactions, not a rule covering every dog, laugh, or setting. It does, however, caution against assuming that a dog sees laughter as an invitation to continue a game.

If a dog repeats an action after a person laughs, a simpler explanation is available: the action may reliably bring attention, interaction, or renewed play. The dog could learn that the action has consequences without understanding the joke behind the person’s reaction. Repetition can suggest that something in the exchange is rewarding; it cannot by itself identify what the dog thinks is funny.
How to read a funny-looking moment without guessing at motive
Separate what you saw from what you think it meant. This keeps an amusing moment enjoyable without turning a plausible interpretation into a claim about what the dog understood.
- Describe the action plainly. For example: “The dog took the toy, ran a short distance, and returned when I moved toward it.” Avoid starting with a motive such as “The dog wanted to trick me.”
- Note what happened immediately before it. Was there a familiar play routine, a human bow or lunge, an offered object, or a movement toward the dog? The play-signal findings concern particular actions in play sessions; context helps you avoid treating every gesture as equivalent.
- Record the response, not just the punch line. Did the dog approach, continue the activity, or disengage? These are observable events. They do not tell you whether the dog appreciated the humor, but they make your account more precise.
- Notice what followed the behavior. If a person’s laughter is followed by attention or another round of interaction, that sequence could help explain why the behavior recurs. It is evidence of a pattern of consequences, not proof that the dog is deliberately performing for comic effect.
- Keep the conclusion modest. “My dog repeats this during play and I find it funny” stays close to the evidence. “My dog understands practical jokes” goes beyond what the behavior alone can establish.
This approach is especially useful when telling whether a moment reflects a shared play routine or a human interpretation layered onto an action. It does not require deciding that dogs lack humor; it simply avoids claiming more than the available observations support.

Why a dog’s response to a gesture is not a humor test
A 2018 naturalistic study by Mitchell, Emily Reed, and Lyndsey Alexander analyzed 62 dog-human play interactions, drawn from 4.8 hours of video involving 26 humans and 27 dogs. People pointed for different purposes, most often toward an object or the ground near themselves. Dogs gave an appropriate response to 24.7% of visible points in the observed interactions.

That percentage applies to visible points in that study’s natural play setting. It is not a measure of dogs’ general intelligence, their ability to understand all pointing, or their capacity to recognize a joke. The study is useful here for a narrower reason: human gestures can have different purposes, and a dog’s response depends on the task and context. It is unsafe to assume that a dog reads a gesture exactly as its human does.
The pointing research also illustrates why evidence about one kind of communication should not be stretched to answer another question. Responding to a point, reacting to a play cue, and understanding a practical joke are distinct abilities. The first two can be studied through visible behavior; the third requires evidence about how the dog interprets the situation and the other individual’s intention.

You can conclude that your dog participates in a recognizable play routine when you repeatedly observe the same actions in that setting. You may also find that a particular cue or response is associated with the dog continuing an interaction. Those are useful descriptions of your shared behavior, even if they do not settle the question of humor.
Be more cautious with claims about inner purpose. An action that looks like keep-away, a feint, or a tease to a person may be part of play or may have been repeated because it produces an engaging response. The available evidence does not let an observer determine from an amusing-looking action alone whether the dog intended to fool someone, understood the incongruity, or meant to make a person laugh.

Nor should a single response be treated as a general verdict about the dog’s comprehension. Studies described here use different methods: coded citizen-science videos, observations of play signals and laughter, comparisons of behaviors between familiar and unfamiliar partners, and naturalistic pointing interactions. They measure different things. None provides a direct test of whether dogs understand practical jokes.
How to enjoy the play without turning it into a test
If your dog enjoys a familiar game, you can respond to the play you can see rather than trying to prove what the dog thinks. Tug, chase, roughhousing, and keep-away were among the routines identified in Horowitz and Hecht’s coded play sample. An interactive tug toy is one optional way to take part in tug; no toy or training method can be presented as a way to teach a dog to understand humor.
Let the dog’s participation guide the activity. A playful routine is a shared interaction, not an experiment that needs a punch line. If a gesture or laugh does not lead to play, do not assume the dog missed a joke: the studies do not establish that laughter automatically signals playfulness, and human actions do not all communicate the same thing in every context.
The most accurate way to describe a charming moment is often also the most useful: say what the dog did, what the person did next, and whether the behavior recurred. That leaves room for a warm human reading of the scene while keeping the scientific claim grounded in observable evidence.
What remains unknown
The studies discussed here do not establish whether dogs consciously appreciate jokes, intend to amuse people, or understand irony and incongruity as humans do. The evidence does establish that dog-human play has varied observable routines, that some human actions can alter dogs’ behavior in play, and that behaviors that look teasing or deceptive can occur in that setting. Those are meaningful findings, but they are not equivalent to a demonstration of a canine sense of humor.
The American Kennel Club’s general-audience article, “Do Dogs Have a Sense of Humor?”, makes the practical limitation plain: we cannot ask dogs what they find funny, and cannot say for sure that they are playing jokes on people. Until a study directly tests joke comprehension and intent, a repeated funny behavior is best understood as play or learned interaction unless stronger evidence supports a more specific explanation.
