Do Elephants Have Names for Each Other? What Scientists Found

Wild African elephants appear to use individually specific, name-like calls. Here is what the 2024 study tested, what playback experiments showed, and why scientists have not translated elephant names.

Probably—but not in the human sense of a translated word. A 2024 study of wild African elephants found evidence that individuals use calls associated with particular receivers, much as a name identifies a person. Machine-learning analysis linked acoustic patterns to the elephant being addressed, and playback tests showed that elephants reacted differently to calls originally directed at them than to calls directed at another elephant.

The finding supports individually specific, name-like calls. It does not reveal a human-readable name, translate an elephant sentence, or show that elephants label food, water, places, or every member of their social group.

What does it mean to say elephants may have names?

In ordinary conversation, “names” are arbitrary labels used to identify individuals. A name does not have to sound like the person it refers to. The elephant study points to a comparable system: a call can contain acoustic information associated with a particular elephant, even when the call does not imitate that elephant’s own voice.

That distinction matters. The scientists did not isolate a single syllable and announce, “This is the elephant word for a specific animal.” Instead, they found two linked patterns. First, the structure of a call helped a computer model predict which elephant was intended as the receiver. Second, elephants responded differently depending on whether a playback call had originally been directed to them or to another individual.

Together, those results are evidence for individual addressing. “Name-like” is the careful description because the study supports the function of a name without decoding the call into a word humans can pronounce or write.

How the 2024 study tested elephant addressing

The field sites and sample

Michael A. Pardo and colleagues studied wild African elephants in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve and Amboseli National Park. The project lasted four years and included 14 months of intensive fieldwork, according to Colorado State University’s account published June 10, 2024.

The analyzed sample contained 469 distinct calls from 101 unique callers and 117 unique receivers, according to Save the Elephants’ June 10, 2024 announcement. Those counts describe the study dataset, not every call made by the herds or the number of elephants worldwide that have proven names.

What counted as a call’s receiver

Observers recorded calls in social situations where the caller and the likely recipient could be identified. A receiver might be a nearby adult, a calf, or an elephant separated from the caller over a longer distance. The researchers then associated each vocalization with the individual it appeared to target.

This design lets scientists ask a specific question: can measurable features of a call predict the intended listener better than chance? It does not assume that every call has a name-like label or that all elephants use the same label system.

Evidence from machine-learning analysis

The first line of evidence came from acoustic analysis. Machine-learning models examined features of the calls—such as patterns in frequency and timing—and attempted to predict the receiver’s identity. If calls addressed to one elephant consistently differ from calls addressed to another, a model can detect that statistical signal even when a human listener cannot hear a discrete “name.”

The model’s success does not mean a computer translated elephant language. It means that information about the intended recipient was present in the sound structure strongly enough to support prediction in the study sample. Acoustic prediction can reveal a communication pattern while leaving the meaning of individual components unresolved.

The paper, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution in 2024, describes the calls as individually specific and argues that elephants probably do not need to copy the recipient’s own call to address them. That probable non-imitative quality is why the comparison with human names is informative: a human name generally identifies someone without reproducing that person’s voice.

Evidence from playback experiments

Statistical prediction alone could reflect habits of particular callers, locations, or social situations. To test whether elephants themselves recognized the intended target, the team used playback experiments.

How the comparison worked

  1. A recorded call had originally been directed at a known elephant.
  2. Researchers played that call to the elephant who had been the intended receiver, or to another elephant for comparison.
  3. They measured the animals’ reactions and compared responses across the two conditions.

Elephants responded differently to calls originally addressed to them than to calls addressed to another individual. The Save the Elephants announcement summarizes the result this way: “Our study design not only shows that elephants use specific vocalisations for each individual, but that they recognise and react to a call addressed to them while ignoring those addressed to others.”

“Ignoring” should not be read as a rigid rule that an elephant never reacts to another animal’s call. Social context, distance, danger, and the caller’s identity can all affect attention. The important result is the systematic difference between calls directed at the subject and calls directed at someone else.

Why the calls are compared with names—not imitation

Many animals identify one another through vocal signatures. A signature call can advertise who is speaking because it resembles the caller’s own voice. The elephant finding is different in the interpretation offered by the authors: the call appears to carry information about the receiver, and it probably does so without simply copying the receiver’s vocalization.

Lead author Michael Pardo told Colorado State University, “By contrast, our data suggest that elephants do not rely on imitation of the receiver’s calls to address one another, which is more similar to the way in which human names work.” The word suggest is essential. The available evidence supports a likely mechanism, but it does not prove that every elephant label is arbitrary or that imitation never contributes to elephant communication.

Co-author George Wittemyer, a professor in Colorado State University’s Warner College of Natural Resources and chair of Save the Elephants’ scientific board, said, “The capacity to utilize arbitrary sonic labels for other individuals suggests that other kinds of labels or descriptors may exist in elephant calls.” That is a hypothesis for future testing, not a result that the study already established.

When elephants used the name-like calls most often

The calls containing the reported individual-specific information appeared more often in situations where identifying the recipient would be useful.

  • Long-distance interactions: Name-like labels were reported more often when elephants addressed one another over greater distances, when visual contact may be limited.
  • Adults addressing calves: Adults were reported to use these labels more often when calling calves.
  • Age differences: The Save the Elephants account reports that adults were more likely than juveniles to use vocal labels.

These are observed tendencies, not restrictions. They do not show that elephants use names only at a distance, only with calves, or only after reaching adulthood. A label could be useful in many other social circumstances that were not represented equally in the recordings.

What the study demonstrates—and what it does not

Question What the evidence supports What remains unproven
Do calls contain information about an individual receiver? Acoustic features helped predict the intended receiver, and playback responses differed according to whom the call had addressed. A complete catalog of labels or a universal naming system for all elephants.
Are the calls similar to human names? They appear individually specific and probably do not depend on imitating the recipient’s call. That elephants use arbitrary labels in every case or that the calls contain a discrete, human-like word.
Can humans translate the calls? No. The study identifies a communication function, not a vocabulary with known English equivalents. The meaning of a particular acoustic segment or a full elephant “sentence.”
Do elephants name things besides elephants? The possibility is scientifically interesting. Labels for food, water, places, objects, or events have not been established by these results.
Does every elephant population use the same system? The finding applies to the sampled wild elephants in two Kenyan reserves. Broad conclusions about every African elephant population or other elephant species.

Elephant communication is larger than vocal names

Elephants communicate through several channels. The study announcement describes information exchanged through sight, scent, and touch as well as vocal sounds. A name-like call therefore represents one part of elephant social behavior, not an explanation for how herds coordinate everything they do.

Visual posture, trunk contact, chemical odors, and low-frequency vocal signals can work together. An elephant may identify a caller from the caller’s voice, recognize a family member by sight or smell, and use a receiver-specific call when it needs that particular individual’s attention. The existence of vocal labels does not replace these other recognition systems.

What scientists still need to find out

Which acoustic features carry the label?

The researchers have not isolated the exact name-like components inside the calls. A call may encode the receiver through several interacting features rather than one short sound. Larger datasets, repeated recordings of the same relationships, and analyses that control for caller, habitat, distance, and emotional state could help separate those possibilities.

How stable are labels over time?

It is not yet clear whether an individual has one stable label, several context-dependent labels, or a label that changes as relationships develop. Long-term tracking would be needed to see whether calves retain the same acoustic designation as they mature and whether different family groups use different forms.

Can labels refer to non-elephant things?

The available findings do not establish labels for food, water, places, predators, or other objects. Testing that question would require carefully controlled situations in which the referent is known while the identities of callers and receivers are separated. The researchers have said that substantially more data are needed before making claims about such descriptors.

How widespread is the ability?

The Kenyan study is an important demonstration, but its sample cannot establish how common receiver-specific calls are across all African elephants. Comparisons among populations, habitats, matriarchal families, and other elephant species could reveal whether the ability is widespread or shaped by local social systems.

How to interpret headlines about “elephant names”

A responsible headline can say that elephants may have names for one another because the study found evidence of individual addressing. It should not claim that scientists have translated elephant speech or discovered the exact word for a named animal.

  • Accurate: “Wild elephants use individually specific, name-like calls.”
  • Too strong: “Scientists decoded the elephant word for each herd member.”
  • Accurate: “Playback tests show elephants respond differently to calls directed at them.”
  • Too strong: “Elephants ignore every call that is not their name.”

The distinction protects the scientific value of the finding. Showing that a call addresses an individual is a major result even when the acoustic code and its full range of meanings remain unknown.

Why this finding matters

Individual addressing requires an animal to track social identities and produce signals that listeners can use selectively. That ability can help maintain contact in large, fission-fusion societies where groups split, merge, and travel through thick vegetation or across long distances.

It also broadens how scientists think about animal communication. Researchers have long documented individual recognition in elephants; evidence for receiver-specific, probably non-imitative labels suggests a more flexible system than simply recognizing who is calling. As Pardo’s team emphasizes, the result is about the function of the calls, not a hidden human language waiting for a dictionary.

For now, the strongest conclusion is precise: wild African elephants in the Kenyan study used vocal signals that carried information about which individual they were addressing, and the intended recipients responded accordingly. Those signals are reasonably described as name-like, while their exact sounds, stability, and possible references beyond elephants remain open questions.
