Yes. Feral cats can play, especially with other cats in their group, but evidence about play in feral populations is limited. That does not mean an unfamiliar feral cat wants to play with a person: feral cats have little or no socialization with people, so observe from a distance rather than approaching or trying to handle one.
What play looks like in feral cats
A veterinarian-reviewed overview reports that feral cats may play with members of their group. That is a cautious description, not a measured estimate of how often play happens or a guarantee that cats in a colony will play together. The available evidence does not establish a prevalence figure or a controlled comparison between feral and socialized cats.

In a study of 13 managed colonies, researchers examined habitat, cat characteristics, health and how far cats stayed from caregivers as an indicator of fear or confidence around people. The study did not directly test play, so it cannot show how commonly feral cats play or whether they do not play.
Why living in a group does not mean every cat is friends
Feral cats can live in flexible social groups. Merck Veterinary Manual’s review, last updated in July 2025, describes groups consisting mainly of queens and their litters, with a few males; food availability and distribution partly influence group density. Cats regulate interactions through distance, affiliative behavior and antagonism. Rubbing, grooming and nose touching can be affiliative signals, while hissing, swatting, scratching and biting can express antagonism.

These behaviors help explain why a group setting is not proof that every cat is comfortable with every other cat. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission defines feral cats as unowned cats living in the wild, while noting that some colonies receive varying levels of food or care from human caretakers. Its definition distinguishes feral cats from owned cats allowed to roam outdoors.
Will a feral cat play with you?
Do not assume so. Feral cats are unowned and have little or no socialization with people. A cat playing with another cat is not evidence that it welcomes a person, toys offered by a stranger or physical contact. Watch from a distance and avoid trying to lure, touch or pick up an unfamiliar cat.
If a cat appears injured or distressed, contact a local animal-welfare organization or veterinarian for guidance rather than attempting routine direct handling. Local circumstances and appropriate responses can differ.
What domestic-cat play research can tell us
Research on household cats offers context for feline play, but it should not be treated as direct evidence about feral cats. A 2023 survey by University of Adelaide researchers collected responses from 1,591 cat guardians in 55 countries. The authors found associations between some play-related factors and measures including quality of life and the cat-guardian relationship. Because this was a guardian survey of domestic cats, it does not establish that play causes better welfare or that the same associations hold for feral cats. The authors called for further research into how play affects welfare and relationships.

Guidance for domestic cats describes opportunities for pseudo-predatory play and feeding behavior. The AAFP and ISFM environmental-needs guidelines discuss toys, play with owners or socially compatible cats, and feeding activities that require cats to acquire food. A Northern Ireland government welfare guide also recommends safe toys and chances to play, while noting that age, personality and past experience can shape behavior and that some outdoor cats are less sociable with people and other animals.
These recommendations help explain how people can support cats already comfortable with them. They are not instructions to approach an unfamiliar feral cat or attempt play with it.
