Cats can learn to distinguish their names from other spoken words, but that does not mean they understand human language as people do. Christopher Bays reports that his cat Olga responds to several familiar words; controlled studies support a narrower conclusion about cats’ recognition of sounds, voices and familiar social cues.
Which words does Olga respond to?
In an article updated September 15, 2026, Christopher Bays describes Olga reacting to “hungry,” “no,” “good girl” and “move.” He says she wakes and approaches when asked whether she is hungry, briefly moves after hearing “no,” appears to respond to “good girl,” and leaves a doorway after “move.” Bays also reports that Olga is more responsive to short words or phrases than to lengthy lectures. These are his observations of one cat, not a tested list of words that cats generally understand. Bays’s account of Olga

Does a cat know its name?
There is controlled evidence that cats can distinguish their own names from other words. In a 2019 study, Atsuko Saito and colleagues used a habituation-dishabituation method to test household cats’ responses to spoken words. The cats discriminated their names from general nouns, including when unfamiliar people said them. The finding concerns distinguishing utterances by their sounds; it does not establish that cats understand what a name means in the way a person does.

How cats may recognize voices and speech
Familiar voices
A 2013 study tested whether cats could recognize their owners by voice alone. Among 20 domestic cats, responses tended to be orienting behaviors, such as moving the ears or head, rather than vocalizing or approaching. A subtle reaction can therefore indicate that a cat noticed a familiar voice, even when it does not come over. Saito and Shinozuka’s 2013 study
Speech directed to a cat
In a 2022 study of 16 companion cats, cats distinguished their owner’s speech directed to them from that owner’s speech directed to adults. They did not appear to make the same distinction when strangers spoke the sentences. This result points to learned familiarity within a particular cat-owner relationship, not a general ability to interpret human speech. Galván and colleagues’ 2022 study
Names and faces
A separate 2022 study found evidence that cats link familiar cat names with faces, with results differing between household and café cats. In a second experiment, cats living in larger human families looked longer at mismatched human name-face pairs. The authors noted that age could not be ruled out as an influence. Looking longer at a mismatch is a measure of attention, not proof that a cat understands a name as a human label. Takagi and colleagues’ 2022 study

What these findings do—and do not—show
- Names: Cats can discriminate the sound of their own names from other words.
- Recognition may be quiet: Ear or head movement and attention can be responses; a cat need not approach or vocalize.
- Familiarity matters: Some speech distinctions were observed with an owner’s voice but not a stranger’s.
- Comprehension has limits: These experiments do not show that cats understand long explanations, abstract ideas or sentences as people do.
The studies tested different things—spoken names, familiar voices, speech directed to a cat, and attention to name-face matches—so their results should not be treated as interchangeable measures of general language ability. The samples of 20 domestic cats and 16 companion cats are study sizes, not estimates of how many cats recognize a particular word. The cited findings do not establish a population-wide count of how many words cats understand.

If your cat reacts to a word, the response may reflect a learned association with its sound, the speaker, or what tends to happen next. Watch for small changes in ear or head position and attention as well as approaching or vocalizing. A response to a familiar cue can be meaningful without showing that your cat understands a longer explanation attached to it.
