Yes. Fish eggs hatch when the embryo develops enough to emerge, but the time varies by species and conditions. A hatchling may still carry a yolk sac and continue developing before it swims freely or feeds.

How long does it take fish eggs to hatch?

There is no standard incubation period for all fish. For example, NOAA says coho salmon eggs incubate for six to seven weeks. By contrast, University of Florida IFAS describes pinfish eggs hatching after about 24 hours at approximately 25 °C (77 °F) in the hatchery conditions discussed. These are species-specific examples, not predictions for other fish.

Blenny incubation also varies by species and temperature; the species covered by University of Florida IFAS commonly take seven to eleven days. To estimate a particular clutch, you need to know the fish species and the temperature and other incubation conditions.

What happens when a fish egg hatches?

Hatching marks the transition from the egg stage, which NOAA defines as “spawning to hatching.” It does not necessarily mean the young fish is ready to live independently.

Some hatchlings emerge with a yolk sac

Atlantic salmon eggs hatch into alevins with yolk sacs attached. The alevins remain in the gravel while they absorb the yolk, then emerge as fry. NOAA reports that about 15 to 35 percent of Atlantic salmon eggs laid survive to the fry stage; that figure applies to Atlantic salmon, not fish eggs generally.

Other young emerge at a more developed stage

Development at hatching depends partly on egg type. NOAA describes pelagic marine larvae as generally hatching before their yolk sac is fully absorbed. Larvae from some demersal eggs absorb the yolk inside the egg and usually emerge at a more developed larval stage.

What affects whether and when eggs hatch?

Temperature, oxygen supply, and water flow all influence egg development and survival. The FAO identifies species-appropriate temperature and continuous oxygen as important for developing fish eggs. In natural settings, flowing water can deliver oxygen to eggs and carry away waste.

A NOAA Fisheries study summary published December 5, 2016, examined how flow conditions affect Chinook salmon egg temperature and survival. In the field conditions described, slower water flow corresponded to an approximately 3 °C difference in egg temperature tolerance compared with laboratory conditions, where water flowed about two to three times faster than typical wild conditions in the study. This is a finding about the study’s Chinook context, not a universal temperature threshold for fish eggs. The researchers compiled data on 180 fish species for their broader analysis.

Can you predict when aquarium fish eggs will hatch?

Not from the question alone. A useful estimate requires the species, water temperature, and relevant conditions such as oxygen and water movement. The examples above show why a timetable from one fish cannot safely be applied to another.

Do not assume every clutch should be moved into an incubator or egg tumbler. The cited guidance establishes that incubation conditions matter, but it does not establish one setup suitable for every species or validate a particular consumer device. Follow species-specific care guidance before changing where or how eggs are incubated.
