Fish scales contain collagen, and researchers have extracted it from sardine, red sea bream, and Japanese sea bass scales. The amount recovered and the properties of the collagen depend on the fish and the processing method, so study yields should not be treated as a universal measure of collagen in scales.
How much collagen have researchers recovered from fish scales?
A 2004 study by Nagai and colleagues reported these dry-weight extraction yields after preparing scales for collagen recovery:

These are results from that study’s laboratory preparation and extraction conditions, not measurements of the collagen fraction in fresh scales. How is collagen recovered from scales?
Scales are mineralized tissue, so they must be processed before collagen can be isolated. In the 2004 study, researchers decalcified and disaggregated scales, then used limited pepsin digestion to prepare collagen. Reviews of fish by-products also identify extraction and manufacturing scale-up as challenges; laboratory recovery does not by itself show that a process is practical or economical at industrial scale. Is fish-scale collagen the same as collagen from land animals?
Not necessarily. Nagai and colleagues characterized the collagen from the three fish species as a heterotrimer with a chain composition of (α1)₂α2. They also reported a lower denaturation temperature than land-animal collagen. That finding describes the materials and methods in their study; it does not establish that every fish collagen behaves identically or that it is interchangeable with other collagen in every application.
Does “marine collagen” on a supplement mean it comes from scales?
No. “Marine collagen” identifies a broad marine source, not the specific fish tissue used. The cited reviews discuss fish collagen and potential food or nutraceutical applications, but they do not establish that typical retail marine-collagen products are made from scales. Check the product’s ingredient-source information before treating it as scale-derived.

Does eating fish scales or taking fish collagen provide a proven health benefit?
The fact that scales contain extractable collagen is not evidence that eating scales or taking a scale-derived product produces a particular health outcome.
